To ask neighbours to help track down a beep?

For the last three days I've been able to hear a beep that happens every 43 seconds (yes I timed it) that seems to be coming from one of the three neighbouring gardens/sheds/garage but I can't get any closer to be able to tell exactly without asking the neighbours for help.

It's not terribly loud - if I close the window I can't hear it - and a lot of people probably wouldn't even notice. It sounds like the same noise my fire alarm makes when it's battery is low, like a little chirp. Thing is though, I find it hard to fall asleep at the best of times and this is just making it harder - stupidly I can't help but lie there and anticipate the next beep.

My wife thinks that if I shouldn't bother the neighbours and that they'll think I'm some kind of fussy idiot if I do for something that she (and almost certainly they) can barely hear and probably haven't even noticed.

Is she right? Would you think that is one of your neighbours came round asking the same? Should I just hope i can get used to it or it goes away?

Op could it be a hot tub? One of the blow up ones especially. Ours beeps when it's got an error like filter needs changing etc. It's about every 45secs and is quite a harsh Beeeep.

It sounds like a mouse deterrent. We had one in a holiday place (probably for use while the house was empty) and I was the only one who could hear it. Good luck finding it!! It drove me mad, luckily it was just a thing we could unplug while we were there.

If the power gets turned off to our cordless landline phones they beep like this.

Tlollj · 08/06/2020 11:16

One of my smoke alarms had been beeping for ages. I can’t unscrew it to change the battery. Normally I’d ask one of my sons but seeing as how they aren’t allowed in it’s still beeping. 🤷‍♀️
I’m just ignoring it.

It sounds like midwife toads. Try googling them and you will agree.
We have them, they do make a racket but we like them. We know summer is on its way when they start up.
They are an imported alien species, and only occur in a few parts of the country. Totally harmless.

Mystery solved (almost certainly anyway). Narrowed it down to one neighbour who thinks he has an old fire alarm tucked away in the shed. He hadn't noticed the beeping but he is going to check it out and hopefully stop it. Again, no problems other than he did look a bit puzzled that I was chasing such a small noise (but then so was DW!).

Thanks everyone for re-assuring me that, although I may be over-sensitive to odd noises, I'm not totally mad or irrational.

That's good news. Hope your neighbour can find it.

SlothRunner · 08/06/2020 19:11

Hurrah!

A mystery solved!

Hurrah.

Notthemessiah · 08/06/2020 23:16

In bed but this time no beeping, so looks (or sounds) like he did find the culprit thankfully. Now if someone can just stop DW from snoring..........

Beep!

myotherusernameisonholiday · 16/06/2020 15:21

@sippingtea did you ever find your beep? Ours is still going and apparently I am terrible at counting to one minute because I just used an actual timer and it's actually beeping every 43 seconds. Must be someone's smoke alarm but our houses back onto a few garages and I can't narrow it down to one of them or someone's house!

SippingTea · 17/06/2020 12:09

@myotherusernameisonholiday No! Still being driven mad! It’s going off as we speak. Beginning to wonder if it’s a hot tub as suggested by another poster but really no idea. Possibly toads. My neighbour has a pond. But there are no garages here so I don’t think you and I are neighbours! Good luck finding out the cause of your beep. Let us know if you do!
