AIBU to ask you the benefits of a 1.5 bowl sink?

We are just about to buy a new sink.

I wanted a simple bowl, no draining board, but my husband wants a bowl and a half sink with drainer, so the opposite end of the spectrum. I’ve compromised over the drainer, but can’t decide whether there is that much benefit of a half bowl to make it worth taking up the extra space.

So to all you that have a 1.5 bowl, is it worth it?

I used to have a1. 5 sink. Useful if I needed to use sink and wash hands etc. How've we now have a normal one bowl sink. We have a utility nearby to wash hands in if sink in use and a dishwasher. If I had to wash up and constantly use sink I'd have a 1.5 again

Definitely worth it - can chuck in contaminated items like knives been used on raw meat, while having main sink clean

That where I put dirty cutlery before sorting for the dishwasher. Can be used for draining stuff too if you are using the sink at the same time

I have one big sink and drainer, no half bowl, and HATE it. If I'm washing up and want to drain or rinse something before putting it in the main sink, I'm stuck!

I suppose I could use a plastic washing up bowl, but I don't like them... :)

If you have a choice, why wouldn't you go for the extra functionality of a half bowl alongside your main sink?

I put cups and cutlery and bowls on drainer and stack plates in the .5 bit to drain. Very handy. When the sink is empty I use the .5 bit for my dishcloth etc. Also handy for draining away bits of liquid before putting into main bowl if you've already filled it. (I dont have a dishwasher).

I defrost things in the half bowl, and use it to drain things if the main sink is full.

I use the small bit for small amounts of water when I'm washing things down etc, when I need to rinse things while I'm washing up or tip anything down while the main bowl is full. I'll be getting another one when this one needs replacing.

I wouldn’t be without our 1.5 sink

If the kitchen was big enough I’d love a 2.5 with drainer, assuming there even is such a thing!

I would definitely recommend a bowl and a half bowl. The half bowl is very convenient, for example for rinsing something with cold water when the main sink is full of hot water.

I've got a 1.5 and I can't see the point of it at all.

We have our waste disposal unit in our half sink. It is life changing in terms of having a stinky food waste bin from peelings etc.

I use my 1.5 for:

• soaking washing in stain remover
• putting the stuff that has touched raw meat
• draining a colander
• putting tea bags too hot to go into the food waste

While leaving the other sink free for hand washing, filling the kettle or pans and washing veg.

** or more to the point, no longer having the stinky bin!

I lived with a single sink for 12 years in my last house as the layout meant there was no room for a 1.5 so when I moved it was one of the things that was non negotiable.

We have the waste disposal in there too like a previous poster. It’s just so so so useful to have a second space for hot/cold, dirty/clean whatever as well.

Life is better with a 1.5 for me.

Its handy for draining pasta or potatoes of boiling water while leaving your sink clear. I inherited mine but would probably choose it again if I ever changed kitchen not a chance, I've heard all the horror stories of kitchens being installed

Loved my 1.5 bowel and no drainer. We had a dishwasher so no need for a draining board.
The half said on our sink held my colander perfectly, and was used to drain veg, or pasta so I could hold the pan handle with two hands.
I also used it to rinse like others if the main side was full of hot water or dirty pots.

I'm so confused if you didn't have a drainer where do you put your dishes when you wash them?

I decided to go for a large sink. I hVe a washing up bow and then the space down the side for running cold tap for water when washing up in owl or draining veg. Advantage of being a big sink is having the large space to soak big pans

Thanks everyone. We have a dishwasher too which will be right under the draining board and we also have a sink in the utility (which is our only sink at the moment, is very small and is all we’ve had for the past four years!) which is only 3 meters from where the new sink will be.

My argument against, is that if we’ve managed with just a tiny sink up until now, what on earth will will do with two more!

I wash my hands over it, pour leftover cups of tea down it, drain off cooked pasta water...think thats about it

@strawberry2017 - straight into the dishwasher or stacked neatly once it was full to wait for the next load!

I don't understand not having a drainer at all

I put the washing up liquid, sponge, scourer, and the jar we use to collect fat to avoid putting it down the drain. So for organisation I suppose!

In the little bowl I mean not the drainer!

Just to throw in, we've got a 1.5 with no drainer. Pretty much everything goes in the dishwasher and the odd thing that doesn't just gets washed and dried and put away.
It's great and we haven't missed the drainer 2.5 years in!
