Do I need to stockpile Heinz ketchup?

Word has it that US food ‘standards’ - high fructose corn syrup in everything, GMOs, artificial colours and flavours etc - will be making their way to the UK.

As an example, I’ve tried the Heinz ketchup in the US and found it disgusting...sickly sweet. Ingredients attached.

Qs:

  • Is there a chance that Heinz ketchup sold in the UK will become Americanized?
  • What other non-perishable foods night this affect? (I know about the travesty of chlorinated chicken)

Thanks

I'd quite like to just be able to get some ketchup, even own brand. It's been out of stock at our Morrison's for weeks (at the times I go shopping). I don't think I can justify extra shopping trips to extra shops just for ketchup though atm.

But yes, I like ketchup as it is, and we won't be buying it if it changes substantially.

I buy the Heinz organic ketchup, or the warehouse club organic which is likely made by Heinz and just repackaged. I'm sure they'd be happy to sell it to you too.

What is in HFCS that isn't sugar? I've looked and fail to see there is any real difference and there's no evidence that it is metabolised any differently from sugar. The difference in composition between US and UK ketchup is a red herring really. The real issue is when foods which do not need to contain any form of sugar have HFCS added to them, e.g. mayonnaise. It's that kind of thing and practices such as chlorinating chicken to make up for poor hygiene practices through the food chain which should be guarded against.

FromEden · 07/06/2020 18:02

I just checked my bottle of heinz here in the US and it doesn't have HFCS in it and actually states as much on the bottle. I've never noticed it tastes different from the home version. Its the organic one, maybe that's why. So I wouldnt panic too much

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/06/2020 18:28

Or find an alternative condiment. I can’t think of any foods that I eat that would be improved if I were to put ketchup on them.

It improves everything! I've had it on Christmas dinner as I don't particularly like gravy.

I've had ketchup in the States and couldn't taste the difference. Now the low sugar low salt crap is a different matter, it's vile.

SonjaMorgan · 07/06/2020 18:29

You should be concerned about the potential change to food standards. It isn't just ketchup.

We currently can see the origin of fresh foods on packaging. There is no definitive answer on if this will change. So when people claim it doesn't matter if chrorinated chicken or hormone fed beef ends up of the shelves because you don't have to buy it, well you may not know.

It is ironic that the older Brexit voting generation who I spoke to thought they would be creating positive change in regards to GDP. None seemed to be expecting more imported goods and less manufacturing.

I hope not because my daughter is intolerant to hfcs and cannot eat anything with it in!

Toomanycats99 · 07/06/2020 18:35

@wowfudge

There's definitely a dufference in how it's metabolised but I don't know how. My daughter can eat sugar / glucose syrup but not hfcs. She also reacts to naturally occurring fructose in high quantities.

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/06/2020 18:37

Waitrose own ketchup is good and only 65p

wowfudge · 07/06/2020 18:39

@Toomanycats99 could it be that she reacts to fructose rather than sucrose?

LEELULUMPKIN · 07/06/2020 18:46

M&S Tomato ketchup is hands down the tastiest. Heinz is just flavourless slop compared to that.

I am not a huge fan of Ketchup BUT M&S's is lovely.

Toomanycats99 · 08/06/2020 06:22

@wowfudge

It's fructose she is intolerant too but can generally handle in its natural state. Hers is triggered (mainly) when it's processed into hfcs.
