www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/uk-population-being-fooled-by-government-1-6684939

Read this today and eviscerating is the right word.
I thought the government would make a hash of everything but they’ve excelled themselves with the Covid crisis.

Just thought others might “like“ to read this if they’ve not already.

What I can figure out is that that website is fervent Remainer.
That's their overwhelming obsession, to trash Brexiters.
I am a fervent Remainer, I don't vote Tory.
I don't agree that tougher lockdown would have been better, or that zero risk is practical.

So thanks for reminding me that I fit in nowhere.

schoolsoutforcovid · 06/06/2020 11:41

I can't read it. It's like an AIBU with no paragraphs.

Terrible

missyB1 · 06/06/2020 11:53

Brilliant article and sums it all up nicely.

pinktaxi · 06/06/2020 11:55

'Neweuropean' ...couldn't possibly have some kind of political bias?

Cherry picking all the things that were done wrong, while completely ignoring all the right things? Paid furlough, additional hospital/ventilator capacity, paying benefits, supporting businesses, shielding people, free food, and so on.

Appallingly biased piece.

Chloemol · 06/06/2020 11:56

I look forward to a real increase in the number of MNetters standing as MPs in the next election to make sure that the country is run to their standards

stophuggingme · 06/06/2020 12:07

@pinktaxi they have done almost nothing right when it comes to Covid. They have been an aberration.
In addition some of the more cynical amongst us might say they only really put furloughing measures in place so they could bully companies and people back to work and also to prop up markets many of them are heavily invested in. Even if this was unsafe and their containment measures were next to non existent. Oh and to use the magic money tree to provide a platform for the biggest austerity measures we will ever see in ours or many lifetimes. Which is what they wanted all along really. While clapping the NHS they are stabbing it in the back and sending us all down the river in a big No Deal paper boat.

But of course BoJo is an anti austerity “Politician” isn’t he ?

Why do you deny the country the benefit of your great wisdom?

Stand for election.

TorkTorkBam · 06/06/2020 12:21

I am dying to know @stophuggingme

What is this big secret plan the people in government have? It's great that you can spot it so clearly. What are they really up to?

Thighmageddon · 06/06/2020 12:25

You go steady there.

All this talk of things that have helped isn't allowed.

We have to be miserable about EVERYTHING didn't you know?

I'm not a Tory btw before anyone says I am.

Ylvamoon · 06/06/2020 12:29

... but it's the British Public who went for a "last visit to the seaside" on a certain weekend in March...
The Nightingale hospitals haven't been full with covid-19 patients...
Not excuses or ignorance, just facts.

stophuggingme · 06/06/2020 12:37

@TorkTorkBam
Nice pat on the head there thanks

I don’t think it’s a secret at all what the government are up to.
It’s thinly veiled contempt for the majority of the country while they take care of their own. Always has been always will be.
They think we are stupid and don’t care whether we know it.

OP posts:
TorkTorkBam · 06/06/2020 12:39

  1. Reaction to a pandemic should not be party political.
  1. What if you were a Tory? Would your opinion be less valid? People being nervous of being accused of supporting mainstream political parties is worrisome in a democracy.
  1. British people are quite capable of being critical of who they voted for. That's why governments change.
B1rdbra1n · 06/06/2020 12:42

The writing is appalling, I can't take it seriously when it's so badly written

TorkTorkBam · 06/06/2020 12:45

@stophuggingme Who is "their own"?

Seriously, you think you are that smart and it matters. Do something. Get involved in running the country yourself. Why not? Too scared? Too difficult? Wouldn't like your decisions being picked over?

I worked with politicians a fair bit in my past, of all stripes. They actually got off their arses and tried to change how things work. All the way from hard left to hard right and the mass in the middle.

Instead of having a puff and whining about how The Man is screwing us all over, they got up and got involved.

B1rdbra1n · 06/06/2020 12:46

I'm happy to read intelligent sophisticated analysis, but this is just the kind of gobshite that you find posted by some idiot on Facebook🤦🏼‍♀️

Thighmageddon · 06/06/2020 12:49

TorkTorkBam I said that I wasn't a Tory because despite this being true, I do agree that even though some of this pandemic has been mishandled, there are some things that this government have done right.

TorkTorkBam · 06/06/2020 12:53

Yeah, I get it @Thighmaggedon. It's my issue not yours Smile. I can't stand what it reveals about tribalism replacing thinking in this country when people say things like they won't read an article in the Mail (or nowadays the Guardian) or feel they have to say "I'm not a Tory" to avoid their thoughts being dismissed.

pinktaxi · 06/06/2020 15:07

@stophuggingme Hilarious! This crappy vile government have spent literally billions of £ supporting half the population to stay at home. They're prepared to undo years of austerity to ensure people don't lose their homes and starve, because they believe people are more important than money. They've done lots of things wrong, but so have many other countries. A global pandemic is unprecedented in living memory.

Not affiliated to any political party, I just vote for the least obnoxious party.

sevencontinents · 06/06/2020 15:08

I think the article is valid. It's purpose is clearly not to present an alternative strategy or insightful analysis. It is to narrate the series of mistruths, mistakes, hypocracy and lapses in judgement that have characterised the government's response to CV, resulting in the tragedy that we see in our death toll figures. Whilst their financial support for businesses and employees has indeed been excellent, that is not the point of the article. The writer is clearly trying to show the extent to which we have been lied to.

stophuggingme · 06/06/2020 16:33

@pinktaxi
In time you will see furloughing for what it really is.
There is not a single thing the Conservatives do without some gain in it for themselves.

@TorkTorkBam
If everyone followed your adage that we had to be doing the job we criticised then the country would be overrun with politicians. Arguably doing a better job than half of them currently occupying office though it has to be said.

OP posts:
ragged · 06/06/2020 17:22

I found the article a tedious biased rant.

I don't enjoy being exposed to anyone's rants, so for me it was a pointless collection of words.
I say that as someone who loathes Johnson.

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/06/2020 17:25

I could only read bits. A good article would have you read every word.

I lost interest after a few lines

I don’t understand the bit about people being told to stay away from pubs and yet people ignoring the advice and then when people died it was all the governments fault

Ultimately governments can advise and legislate but it is up to the individuals to look after themselves.

It isn’t the 70’s or 80’s where there is no internet and no access to news, advice or information.
If you can’t work out that going to a packed pub is not a good idea during a global pandemic after the government had advised you to stay away then what more can someone do

Therollockingrogue · 06/06/2020 17:27

Remind me not to subscribe to the New European.
Did the work experience guy write this?
