Ridiculous argument over table, Aibu?

Tsubasa1 · 05/06/2020 21:44

AIBU unreasonable to ask, how many tables does one need in a house?
We currently have TWO tables, one in the kitchen and one in the living room.
I want to SELL the one in the living room (seats 6 to 8 people) to make a "play nook" for the kids and have more room to move around the room in a free way. The table gets in the way of everyone. Husband thinks this table is ESSENTIAL for when we have guests, although he admits we don't have guests often (even before covid).
The kitchen table can sit 6 people.
YABU- you need that table
YANBU- sell the table and make room for your lods to play

Keep the kitchen table and move it into the living room when you have guests for dinner.

Kahlua4me · 05/06/2020 23:16

You can get coffee tables that convert into dining room tables, would that work for when you have people over?
I think Dwell has them...

DipseeDaisey · 05/06/2020 23:19

I hate tables, dont have any in my house, they just got used as shelves so got rid....Glad I could help Grin

mnistooaddictive · 05/06/2020 23:22

We unscrewed the legs of our dining table and it lived under a bed for 5 years so we could have a play room. Once the dd outgrew the need for a playroom, it came back. So glad we didn’t get rid of it.

I agree with @snowybean, sell both, get an extendable. Saves on space in both rooms and will open up for when you have guests.

Healthyandhappy · 05/06/2020 23:29

Who has a table in lounge kitchen or conservatory?? Put a pic on as depends on size of lounge

Stefoscope · 05/06/2020 23:31

I'd get rid of the living room one and not bother replacing it until it's needed (or most likely not). Unless it's really nice one there's not much point holding onto it as they can be picked up for very cheap or even free on Gumtree.

lottiegarbanzo · 05/06/2020 23:42

Either get a trestle table that can be used in the living room (as occasional dining room), or one that can be used to extend the kitchen table when needed.

MadameMeursault · 05/06/2020 23:47

You need to prioritise your kids who live permanently in your house over occasional guests. We had our 2nd bedroom as a guest bedroom and the kids in rooms 3 and 4, then realised this was ridiculous and the kids should take priority, so moved it all around. Get rid of a table!

BobbieDraper · 05/06/2020 23:47

@Healthyandhappy

Well I'm a single parent so I bought the house I could afford. I chose room size over having a proper dining room. I have a big lounge and big kitchen so having a table in one or both isnt really a noticeable problem. The living room has a wide bay window type thing, so the table sits in there.

BobbieDraper · 05/06/2020 23:48

@DipseeDaisey
Where do you eat? Or sit down to do a puzzle or read a big paper?

ChicCroissant · 05/06/2020 23:52

Have you got a lounge/diner OP, or a kitchen/diner? I've got a lounge/diner in this house, I do miss having a separate dining room.

Could you store the table for a bit as a previous poster said rather than sell it to see how using the space differently goes?

We use our dining table a lot as penguins said, not just for eating meals at but I do know that not everyone does. Add homeschool to that at the moment as well! DD has always preferred to do her homework downstairs rather than in her room and uses the dining table. In fact we've got an office chair at our dining table during lockdown for her to use - not particularly stylish but comfy for sitting at all day. I suppose it's a step up from the plastic kitchen we used to have in our old dining room Grin

Okidokey · 06/06/2020 00:15

Obviously it's difficult to know what will work without knowing the size and layout of the rooms. I'm wondering if you could push the table against the wall, use the top for toy storage and get a long tablecloth so that the children can have the space underneath the table as a den/playhouse. Mine would absolutely love something like this!

Then when they are older it would be useful for playdough/arts and crafts/puzzles etc.

DipseeDaisey · 06/06/2020 00:16

@BobbieDraper We sit in the front room with the food on trays on our laps, The TV is off so we still have family time. When Ds does a puzzle, we have an old piece of plywood that slides under the sofa when he is finished for the day, I don't read newspapers, I use my phone for news. HTH Smile

BackforGood · 06/06/2020 00:25

What @penguinsbegin said.

We have a table in our kitchen / breakfast room
Table in the dining room
Table that moves around the house - currently being used for my dh to work from home, but has been in various places over the years
A large desk in the room I wfh in (I used to use the table dh is using until about a year ago)

Don't you ever want to leave stuff out, when it is meal time ?
Where will your dc do drawing / colouring / painting / then homework ?
Doesn't anyone ever need a work surface for wrapping presents / cutting something out / doing a jigsaw / spreading things out when you are trying to sort something / putting a laptop on when you are working for longer than you might want it on your lap / any other hobby ?

NaomiFromMilkShake · 06/06/2020 00:32

We started out life together, (inherited from DH's previous life) with a mahogany table and grown up chairs.

When we had enough money we bought a lovely pine table and chairs, the table and chairs went in the loft, we then moved house, the mahogany table and chairs came with us. >

In the new house we had a front room, a breakfast room and a garden room.

Pine table and chairs went in the breakfast room, DH insisted mahogany table be installed in the front room and be called the dining room. I agreed and sat back and watched the front room become a glory hole, after eighteen months I insisted that it went to live in the garage (albeit covered in cling film) nineteen years later DS cleared out the garage to use as a man cave and DH finally caved and said use it for your man cave.

Long way of saying it was never missed, we stuck the chairs in the attic (table wouldn't fit this time) and we take them down to squeeze extra people around the pine table and have never really missed the other table.

ATomeOfOnesOwn · 06/06/2020 00:50

Hmm, I'm torn because we decided against a bigger table in the living room and thought we'd be fine with the kitchen table and a large coffee table, but now I wish we had opted for the bigger table. You're a family of four so having a 6-seater table means you can only have two guests which is quite limiting.

gumball37 · 06/06/2020 01:01

We have one table. I have several folding tables in my garage for when I have yard sales or have parties.

happymummy12345 · 06/06/2020 02:41

We just have a dining room table. I hate tables in kitchens personally.

Tsubasa1 · 06/06/2020 06:54

@penguinsbegin wow that's a LOT of tables! ~I plan to buy a desk for using my laptop/studying or when my 3 year old wants to do jigsaws. I might also buy a large coffee table but I'm undecided on that. Drawing and painting gets done in the kitchen and cleaned up before meals.
@ATomeOfOnesOwn I have a friend who only has a 3 seater kitchen table. When we go to hers we sit on the sofas and just hold our plates on our lap and eat. I actually find it much more chilled out than eating at the table!
I've got a very mixed bunch of answers on this thread. Very varying opinions on how useful/useless my table will be!

We have one in the kitchen and one in the lounge. It depends on the space but the one in the lounge gets used a lot and we couldn't do without it.

HugeAckmansWife · 06/06/2020 07:00

We have a big one in the kitchen diner that is always 50% covered in craft stuff but still has space for us to eat. I put a wallpapering table in the living room against one wall for dds extensive collection of lego, playmobile and dolls house stuff.

m00rfarm · 06/06/2020 07:56

Get this table from Ikea
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/norden-gateleg-table-white-10423886/

Solves all problems and also has drawers each side

Sceptre86 · 06/06/2020 08:01

We have a table in the kitchen and then a bigger one that seats 8-12 in the dining room. We use the kitchen one everyday and the dining room one on special occasions, dh is currently using it as his office desk. I would not want guests to eat in my kitchen just because there would be pots and pans everywhere and not enough space to seat them all.

That being said you need a solution that works for you and having one extendable table is a good idea however your kids won't be little forever. My 4 and 3 year old sit at our table in the kitchen to have meals, do arts and crafts and some learning now.
