...And the flour, dessicated coconut and bicarbonate of soda. It’s an outrage! I need my cake.

I'm struggling with brown sugar.

picklemewalnuts · 04/06/2020 21:30

@KittenVsBox add a touch of black treacle to white sugar, I stead of brown sugar. It works. More treacle gives darker sugar, less gives golden light brown.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 04/06/2020 21:32

I made dessiccated coconut from dried coconut flakes in a small electric chopper. Worked a treat

RedRed9 · 04/06/2020 21:33

You can make icing sugar by blending ordinary sugar.

I tried this. It looked like icing sugar but was grainy when mixed with butter and was too unpleasant to eat.

KittenVsBox · 04/06/2020 21:46

Thanks, pickle. Will see if Tesco has treacle next week!

I agree you can get a sort of caster sugar by blending granulated, but icing sugar doesn't seem to get fine enough for icing. I have used a fudgy chocolate icing that has condensed milk in, and no sugar. Grainy icing sugar is usually ok in biscuits tho.

Same place as the brown sugar....impossible to find

EngagedAgain · 04/06/2020 21:52

What about making flour free brownies 😂😂 (I think they are a thing?)

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/06/2020 21:58

I made a cake topping the other day that was simply dark chocolate melted in oat milk.
It was a vegan cake, hence the non-dairy milk; I presume that ordinary milk would work too.
75ml milk to 100g of chocolate - ideally make it a bit beforehand and it will set to a good consistency. Should cover about 16 cupcakes. Not too sweet - I think I preferred it to icing.

Granulated sugar in a grinder (like you use to grind spices or coffee beans) rather than a food processor will make icing sugar too.

Another alternative - avocado, cocoa powder with syrup rather than sugar to sweeten.

Admittedly, my suggestions mostly only helpful if you like chocolate cake topping!

Bananasplitlady · 04/06/2020 21:59

Same place as the sodding yeast :( haven't seen yeast in 3 months. I could buy a franchise in Papa John's, the amount I have paid in takeaways.

Zisforstripyoss · 04/06/2020 22:22

Got some from Morrisons and brown sugar from Asda last week.

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/06/2020 22:25

Ground almonds and rice paper is what I'm after. Shielding, so no trying corner shops, and there's no way you can ask someone shopping as a favour to get a list starting with ground almonds, rice paper Grin

dementedma · 04/06/2020 22:25

Local Costcutter had it when 4 supermarkets didnt. Brown sugar in short supply too

Collywibbles · 04/06/2020 22:29

Not seen yeast anywhere. I can get flour, sugar etc. But no yeast. Probably just as well though.

TacosTuesday · 04/06/2020 22:33

If you can try small local shops - our Spar had some in stock luckily for the birthday cake I needed it for. Also Facebook businesses- some cake makers/bakers around my area have been selling and delivering flour/yeast etc through lockdown...

dementedpixie · 04/06/2020 22:34

Dh bought yeast online

maddy68 · 04/06/2020 22:40

Loads in Aldi ?

1fluffydoodle · 04/06/2020 22:49

light brown Muscovado sugar is impossible to find at the moment

ineedto · 04/06/2020 22:51

@MereDintofPandiculation simplycakecrafts sell rice paper and postage is only £1 for a small amount.

theAntsareMyFriends · 04/06/2020 22:51

@Mercedes519 I've not been able to buy chocolate chips but it's easy to get hold of chocolate buttons. They are great in cookies.

Yugi · 04/06/2020 23:04

You can buy flour from the Doves Farm website. And yeast

bilbodog · 04/06/2020 23:06

For chocolate chips why not chop up a bar if chocolate?

PurpleDragons · 04/06/2020 23:10

Well, my local police force may have found where the icing sugar went at the very least.......

Where the bloody icing sugar?!!!
Kittenlicker · 05/06/2020 07:52

I think people are still panic- buying personally or prepping as they like to call it, to make it sound better.

Both Aldi and Lidl are the only places stocked up on baking supplies around here. Depending on your local community,it was Eid recently so that may have effected supplies.

DennisTMenace · 05/06/2020 08:35

Only got granulated around here. Plus no chocolate chips or baking powder/bicarbonate of soda. I gave my bag of self raising to mil thinking I could just add raising agent myself. I have current pot, but no more when runs out.
