Fed up with ridiculous token sentiments

Rant alert! AIBU to be fed up with the nonsense going on around me. First it was "Be Kind" on profiles, replaced by mad dashes to Tesco to grab every bog roll in sight (leaving the vulnerable without) to the 8pm clapping including tears, trombones and other ridiculous themes that actually do not help the nhs, to bending on one knee tonight in our homes. Again, nice sentiment but what will it actually achieve? Absolutely Nothing except flood social media with "proof" that we are nice people. Pics of people clapping for nhs and now lots of bending on knees. Surely there are more constructive ways of dealing with serious issues than this?

Fully agree. Actions speak louder than words and I get a bit fed up with stuff being done for insta likes. I wish people would just genuinely get on with being kind to each other as a natural way of life.

Mimilamore · 03/06/2020 18:29

Totally agree....,

iamadalek2 · 03/06/2020 18:33

@Inspiralcarpetry totally agree. My neighbours complain (on Facebook) if not everyone is out for the 8pm clapping. Sometimes I'm not in because I'm delivering food parcels for those shielding ffs! They lie around the house all day doing nothing to help and then post videos of themselves dressed up playing instruments for the clap. Sons of them getting emotional and shedding a tear for extra points! It's madness!!

The bended knee is making my stomach turn. That is replicating the police bastard killing George Floyd fgs! Surely there is something more respectful for the poor man

duletty · 03/06/2020 18:37

Agree...
Just be a decent human being
Stop being entitled
Think before you open your gob
Stop emoting all over social media, it’s easy to post, do something
Tell your children about to justice and inequality

TerribleCustomerCervix · 03/06/2020 18:39

Agree 100%.

How many people posting black screens yesterday have actually done anything to modify their behaviour or challenged their own ways of thinking?

I didn’t post a black screen, because it’s bloody patronising and totally ineffectual.

Instead, I’ve realised that I have two young kids, and I can positively influence how they view the world and race. They’re only 1 & 2, but I need to start now. I’ve ordered some picture books about Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman to start us off, and I need to educate myself so I can answer their questions and fill in my own knowledge gaps.

Maybe go and educate yourself about the symbolism behind taking the knee in connection with peaceful protest about police brutality. It’s literally got nothing to do with mimicking police actions and is actually incredibly respectful.

Do it or don’t - I personally won’t be - but at least make an effort to understand why people would.

annielouisa · 03/06/2020 18:51

Google Colin Kaepernick to understand bending the knee. I do not join in with everything but do appreciate people trying to show understanding of the pain of being judged just on the colour of your skin.

Ffs not this again.
recycledteenager24 · 03/06/2020 19:09

yanbu op alot of it is purely for social media and totally meaningless whether people like it or not.

Whenasuitcasejustwontdo · 03/06/2020 19:16

I disagree that it's totally meaningless. It raises awareness and makes people think about their own actions. If there wasn't so much coverage on social media then the knowledge wouldn't have spread to some people.

chickedeee · 03/06/2020 19:17

Imo getting involved in politics is the way forward then you can change the establishment from the inside Grin

StealthPolarBear · 03/06/2020 19:22

I agree op. Not convinced the activity for Facebook likes translates into better actions in relation to that specific subject. Anecdotally those loudest and proudest for the NHS clap are those who don't seem to care about social distancing or not mixing households.

ChicCroissant · 03/06/2020 19:27

I hadn't heard anything about taking the knee at home if I'm honest, but I'm surprised that there are posters who don't know the history of that gesture!

Tappering · 03/06/2020 19:44

It's virtue signalling.

Donate directly to BLM - or if you want a UK-specific charity, the Stephen Lawrence Fund.

Money means more than a bended knee photo from your living room, posted to FB to garner woke-cookie likes.

1Morewineplease · 03/06/2020 19:47

Agree.

sixthtimelucky · 03/06/2020 19:48

Jesus please educate yourself about taking the knee!

pinkprosseco · 03/06/2020 19:51

I find the NHS Thursday night clapping is all about showing how good you are. A lot of people don't bother about social distancing and that has more impact on NHS workers than clapping. Want to thank them then follow the guidance and vote for better pay and conditions for front line staff

Tappering · 03/06/2020 19:58

I support taking the knee but would not do it myself at home and post to social media, because as a white woman it feels like an empty gesture - that it's easy for me to do this safe in my own home and from a position of privilege. I've donated to BLM instead.

tenlittlecygnets · 03/06/2020 20:06

Urgh, virtue signalling.

Ghostlyglow · 03/06/2020 20:20

Agreed. I hate it all. Makes my skin crawl.

Samtsirch · 03/06/2020 20:22

I don’t think taking the knee is replicating the bastard who kneeled on George Floyd. Footballers kneeled to protest against racism in 2016 and is used by the BLM movement.

What an ignorant comment to make.
Sugartitss · 03/06/2020 20:23

What’s the bended knee thing?

Samtsirch · 03/06/2020 20:33

In 2016 a footballer kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem to protest against police racism and brutality.
