the mentality behind people who leave their trash in parkland/nature reserves

I just can't fathom why people do this. Where do they think their lucozade bottles, plastic cups, sandwich wrappers are going to go?

I've just picked up a whole carrier bags worth of stuff on my dog walk (and there's more) and it just makes me so mad.

What's worse, the parkland we walk in, has cows and horses grazing over the summer so these innocent animals could be harmed. Not to mention the amount of discarded chicken bones and other food leftovers my dog has scoffed before I realize.

Why do some have no respect for the environment in this day and age?

Anytime we go out a picnic we take a black bag for all the rubbish, it's not difficult to clean up after yourself so I really don't get why people leave all their rubbish behind, like the pictures I saw of some beaches over the weekend. It's sad to think that in these cases they just don't care.

WinWinnieTheWay · 03/06/2020 23:02

It's a combination of stupidity, ignorance, selfishness and a "fuck you" mentality.

I once watched a woman chuck her families McDonalds rubbish out of a car window. They were parked next to a bin. That action told me so much about those people.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2020 23:06

Unfortunately I am inland and these absolute pricks are having bbqs on tinder dry grassland

We were intending to walk to Darwen tower on Monday. But an idiot had set it alight the previous evening. And then other idiots impeded the efforts to put it out by flying drones to look at it which grounded the water-dumping helicopters.ConfusedHmm

Sheer bloody thoughtlessness. Its a minority, not most people, but the impact is enormous.

DingDongDenny · 03/06/2020 23:12

We were at a beautiful Scottish loch last Friday and the shore line was covered in broken glass from beer bottles - people who do that are utter pricks

FamilyOfAliens · 03/06/2020 23:14

I agree with you about the littering.

But YABU to call it “trash” Grin

JoesExotic · 03/06/2020 23:16

I read a comment somewhere that said the litter is possibly being left by the people who would otherwise be frequenting pubs all day. Can't help feeling a ring of truth at that.

This was the scene at my local AONB recently Angry

Felifox · 03/06/2020 23:24

The hedgehog was on our local fb page, and someone had also suggested the Welsh poster. As for those disposable BBQ's, so dangerous when we've had so little rain, and people leave them on beaches or grass for people to tread on.

Our local parish council are responsible for the toilets on the beach, which they're not allowed to reopen until there is a safe way to clean. In 3 years vandalism has cost £12,000. The complaint here about McD's isn't just the rubbish but the queues jamming roads to the drive through

Bella2020 · 03/06/2020 23:25

The people who do this are filth. There's no other word I can think of to better describe them.

I live on a country lane and there are a few regular 'grot spots' used by fly tippers. A local garage uses the lane to dump worn tyres, a painter & decorator leaves empty paint pots, must be non-professional tree surgeons leave piles of branches, clippings etc. I absolutely loathe these people. Our neighbours often go through dumped bags and, on a few occasions, have found correspondence with names & addresses on. They pass this info on and the council say they contact the people, but can't discuss the outcome. I'd like to see people who drop litter/fly tip be made to clean up their mess.

I was brought up to take my litter home and put it in the bin. I don't know why some people find that so difficult.

FruitPastillesaregood · 03/06/2020 23:32

I’ve started picking up other people’s litter on a regular basis. I think a lot of people have never been taught basic manners. Honestly, it’s beyond disgusting and really upsetting. So many people are just utterly selfish.

LimitIsUp · 03/06/2020 23:40

Sherbet - I am guessing that some of these people are not particularly keen nature lovers but are accessing green spaces as one of the few recreational options open to them, whereas they would prefer to be in a shopping centre/ pub / restaurant / cinema / swimming pool / bowling alley etc

Nanalisa60 · 03/06/2020 23:55

Every time I take the dog out I take a carrier bag with me and fill it up to be truthful I could fill up carrier bags all day and there would still be stuff dumped. I just get so depressed that there is so much I think a lot of people just throw stuff out of the car windows. I just don’t understand it take stuff back to your own house and empty the car out at home.
Every time I go to the beach for the day I take two black bags first one the clean the bloody beach as I just can’t sit on it and have a relaxing time when I can see trash. Then the second one is used for our picnic then usually manage to find more stuff on the walk back to the car.

Last year on our main beach (Scottish city) that was very busy at lunch time two women came down with there kids with fish chips and bottles of pop all sat on the wall eat it then just got up and left. I went bloody mental at them they just told me to f*k off called me a English bitch and to F*k back to England.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/06/2020 00:29

@JoesExotic - someone had done a good job cleaning up after that, we were there yesterday and I think we saw just one abandoned chair in a car park. Massive thanks to the people who get lumbered with that task.

CuriousPixie · 04/06/2020 00:43

Dropping litter is against the law and prosecution can incur hefty fines ....... BUT I have never heard of anyone, ever being prosecuted. And that's the problem. If more fines were dished out then the fuckwits might finally get the message.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/06/2020 00:52

Yes, fines or even better something like what was suggested upthread:

  • When I'm in charge of the country, anyone who drops litter will be sentenced to three years of weekend and bank holiday litter picking wearing hi vis clothing emblazoned with
    I AM A TWAT. I DROPPED LITTER.*

People who light bbqs or campfires in unsafe areas would maybe have to do conservation volunteering.

SingingSands · 04/06/2020 01:16

It gives me the absolute red rage to see the state of our local Yorkshire beauty spots after a "sunny day out" during lockdown. The last week and a half has been horrendous, a combination of sunny weather, half term (ha!) and easing of lockdown.

What I'd like to see is some PCSOs walking about, doing some active fining or even just "encouraging" people to clear up their shit.

If you can drag it all 20 miles from your hovel, you can drag it all back with you afterwards.

I'd love some snappy retorts to use to as well, for those that mouth off like the disgusting women who told a PP to "fuck off back to England" or "do you think you're Greenpeace". I can never think of anything to say quick enough.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 04/06/2020 01:20

The reason are so bad now is because everywhere else is closed.

Those who previously may have done paid for activities such as shopping or whatever are now dragging their loose ends elsewhere. So the lakes for example has a massive influx of new people, especially over the hot days we've had where they can swim relatively safely and get pissed. Oh and take drugs. They left that paraphernalia behind too.

And they absolutely trashed the place. I've honestly never seen it so bad.

Cadent · 04/06/2020 01:24

It’s an assumption that it’s someone else’s job to clean it up.

JoesExotic · 04/06/2020 10:01

@ErrolTheDragon
I'm glad, it's such a magical place but that said, I wouldn't want to see the whole Ribble Valley dotted with row after row of bins either. It's working farmland afaik. Hope you had a lovely day.

FruitPastillesaregood · 04/06/2020 10:04

If the police can patrol areas to check people are social distancing, why can’t they patrol to check people aren’t littering? I just don’t get it. At the start of lockdown they were everywhere with their megaphones and self importance.

Hingeandbracket · 04/06/2020 10:12

They are cunts.

They simply don't give a fuck about anyone else.

And there is no shortage of these people sadly.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/06/2020 10:58

@JoesExotic - fortunately there's quite a few places hereabouts which aren't known 'beauty spots' and/or have limited parking which so far have escaped the trashing.

dramadrama · 04/06/2020 11:12

FruitPastillesaregood

Entirely agree with you.

CuriousPixie · 04/06/2020 14:28

@Nanalisa60 Flowers
I'm Scottish and please accept my apologies for that vile person on the beach. That is a disgusting way to speak to anyone and it boils my blood that people make such comments. She and her ilk do not represent the majority of decent, welcoming folk in Scotland. If I had been within earshot I'd have retorted to her, in my vernacular Glaswegian accent, that she should fuck off back to her fucking cave and her comments were a disgrace and take her rubbish with her you minging, clatty, bitch.

x

BovaryX · 04/06/2020 14:36

@ErrolTheDragon

That's awful to read about the fire. The wildlife that must have died as a consequence. Bloody idiotic behaviour. Dire.

LongLiveTheQueenBee · 04/06/2020 14:49

Our local nature reserve put a post up this week... Bins overflowing, rubbish on the floor, fences broken down to get to the water's edge (not allowed), BBQs left (also not allowed) dog poo all over, nappies left in the car park, stones been thrown at the ducks had also been witnessed!!!
Where is the respect??
Before lockdown it was a lovely peaceful place to walk, now it's a mess!!!
