Just this - can I eat tinned tuna Monday through Friday safely? I've got a real hankering for it at the minute!

I'm almost 100% certain that eating that amount of tuna would cause you to overdose on mercury

thenightsky · 03/06/2020 15:08

I love it too. I could eat it every day quite easily, but I restrict myself to once a week as I read somewhere it contains quite high levels of mercury (I think it was mercury).

thenightsky · 03/06/2020 15:09

Oh, cross post with cabin

AriettyHomily · 03/06/2020 15:09

No! Heavy metal contamination.

IntoTheUnknown89 · 03/06/2020 15:09

Oh Sad

When pregnant you're advised not to eat tuna more than twice a week due to mercury levels, so it is fairly high. You would probably be OK for one week but if you had tuna every day for a long time it would do some damage.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 03/06/2020 15:10

Are you my DS? The answer is the same as always, no you may not, as it is part of my stockpile and varies in availability in th supermarket at the moment.
Plus, the mercury thing.

OneHanded · 03/06/2020 15:11

Whilst I do think it’s unreasonable I did eat mussels everyday before becoming vegan so you do you! There’s no restrictions on tinned tuna unless you’re pregnant or trying (due to the mercury). If you need reassurance:

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/06/2020 15:12

NHS say no more than 4 cans or 2 steaks a week if pregnant or TTC. So it’s probably fine to have 5 portions a week.

ScarfLadysBag · 03/06/2020 15:12

The advice for pregnant women is:

Tuna: if you are trying for a baby or are pregnant, you should have no more than 4 cans of tuna a week or no more than 2 tuna steaks a week

From NHS site. So if you aren't pregnant, I don't think five tins a week is going to be harmful.

IntoTheUnknown89 · 03/06/2020 15:13

@OneHanded Thanks Smile It says 4 cans is fine.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/06/2020 15:14

NHS says to limit to 4 cans a week if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, so if this isn't you, 5 cans is fine as there is no limit and it's only slightly more than the restrictive pregnancy guidance.

IntoTheUnknown89 · 03/06/2020 15:16

Praise be! Lol. I wouldn't eat it 5 days a week every week, I'll probably go off it again next week!

AdoptedBumpkin · 03/06/2020 15:17

Apparently 117% think you are unreasonable...Grin

ScarfLadysBag · 03/06/2020 15:17

Off to make a tuna mayo toastie now!

IntoTheUnknown89 · 03/06/2020 15:17

@ScarfLadysBag Make one for me too!!

Stefoscope · 03/06/2020 15:18

I expect you'd need to be eating several cans a day for several months before you consumed enough mercury to suffer the effects of poisoning. By which time you'll probably be sick of the sight of tuna!

IntoTheUnknown89 · 03/06/2020 15:20

@Stefoscope For sure!

zscaler · 03/06/2020 15:55

Tuna is one of the things I miss most since going vegan. Savour your toasties on my behalf!

purpleleotard · 03/06/2020 18:38

The main problem is that Tuna is an at risk species.

Probably eating any is contributing to its swift decline

PrettyTricky · 03/06/2020 18:40

I love it too, but that's too much. Mercury poisoning is no joke.

SpillTheTeaa · 03/06/2020 18:42

If you're pregnant you should be really careful. You should be careful anyway but you should follow advice. Mercury poisoning is very serious.
