Why are all my friends becoming Body Shop consultants?

Since I hit 30, I've noticed at least 6 of my wider friendship group do this. Is it actually profitable? Is it MLM? I'm just curious mostly, as it looks like quite a lot of effort to drum up sales!

All of mine are selling bloody Younique! All of them posting On Facebook the same picture of a woman who is clearly wearing false lashes prorclaiming it’s all due to some miracle proxy mascara. I don’t want to defriend them as they are lovely people who I’m presume have had some sort of lockdown induced psychosis!

I was selling Avon products for a few months recently but I stopped just before lockdown. It did cost me money because I wasn't getting enough orders so I had to pay for delivery and wasn't making commission. I annoyed myself by posting promotions and I only did it a couple times a week. Now I know someone selling Nuskin products and it's several posts a day. It's so boring and as much as I actually want to buy one of the products, I'm going to get it direct instead. I also didn't realise real people bots actually exist for mlm's! She had loads of comments that weren't from friends and I was baffled!

madcatladyforever · 03/06/2020 13:16

God me too, I'm sick to death of hearing about it, My friend has just ruined her lovely niche business my plastering bodyshop staff all over the website and wonders why sales are down.

MulberryPeony · 03/06/2020 13:16

I only have one bodyshop@home rep and she’s fairly low key. It’s a low cost start up cost with a recognised brand name so I can understand the appeal especially to those who are on reduced pay or not getting paid at the moment.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/06/2020 13:17

@InDubiousBattle fair enough....my sneery tone is directed at the mlm companies themselves rather than the women who become 'consultants'....'presenters'...'reps'...'ambassadors' etc...although i have to say with all the info easily available on the internet i am surprised at the number of seemingly intellingent peolple who get suckered into these schemes.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 03/06/2020 13:17

Mine too. If I want BS stuff, I'll order it online Hmm

Notredamn · 03/06/2020 13:19

Bloody younique

I'm staggered! That is so 5 years ago. Tragic.

vanillandhoney · 03/06/2020 13:21

A friend of mine got into Body Shop just before Christmas.

Bless her, she's still trying but she gets little to no engagement on any of her posts. I can't see that she makes anything from it.

The latest one around here is FM world, which just has scam written all over it.

MulberryPeony · 03/06/2020 13:22

@Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel discount and no p&p swung it for me. I wouldn’t have ordered just a shower gel online admittedly.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/06/2020 13:23

Can i add to that JuicePlus too...equally as tragic.
Typohere · 03/06/2020 13:25

Lots of people are convinced that they are going to make lots of money for little time and effort and join up with all these different schemes. They bombard their social media and other friends with buy this brilliant (overpriced) stuff and join in selling with me....

They realise that they cannot make lots of money and give up - until the next MLM scheme (scam) comes along

Katiepoes · 03/06/2020 13:29

I buy the Camomile cleansing products from the Body Shop, sometimes scrubs - but have never seen a person selling them, I just use their website. There are always offers and if you have one of their loyalty cards here they seem to give vouchers just for logging in - so how on earth would anyone think they could make money as a rep for them?

EmperorCovidula · 03/06/2020 13:29

@TreeTopTim Neals yard is one (but a lot of people sign up just for the discount and only order for themselves/for friends and family at cost, although I do believe that in the US it’s a full on MLM). Their products are really nice though.

apples24 · 03/06/2020 13:31

Tons of FM, Tropic, Arbonne and BodyShop amongst my "mummy friends" group. They flood my FB feed with the s**.

Some of the products, especially Tropic, are OK but am still annoyed with the phenomenon and these poor mums think they'll actually make a decent living from it Confused

Bluesheep8 · 03/06/2020 13:34

Because some people's income has been seriously affected by a world pandemic and they're simply trying to find the ends, let alone make them meet.Hmm

okiedokieme · 03/06/2020 13:39

I sold Avon years ago and it was quite lucrative, not a con - this was before they had a website I should add. If the product is genuine and in demand it can provide a modest income but some of these home sales products are dubious. Body shop products are good and there's not a branch near me so I would jump at going to a "party".

Stingeray · 03/06/2020 13:39

I have a body shop rep neighbour. Very low key and stresses there is no pressure to buy. I have bought a few things from her and she drops them off whenever is convenient for me. Easier than ordering online or going to a shop. Mind you I declined the offer of joining her Facebook group so she might be more pushy there.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 03/06/2020 13:43

I have a friend who started BS just before lockdown. I tried to dissuade her but she was adamant. I said it was her choice but I wouldn’t be getting involved. Now it’s all over her social media, how she’s running her ‘business’. 4 weeks after she started selling she was recruiting to her ‘team’! All I do with people like that is hide them on social media until they stop doing it. The only people making money from any of those schemes are very, very high up in the chain.

userabcname · 03/06/2020 13:43

Much to his bafflement, one of DH's Facebook friends attempted to enlist HIM to her mlm scheme. He didn't know what was more bizarre: her insistence that it's not a pyramid scheme despite describing it as exactly that, or the fact she seems to think DH would be interested in selling skincare/make up stuff - the man doesn't even know was mascara is!

madcatladyforever · 03/06/2020 13:44

If it was so easy to make money everyone and his brother would be doing it. I've been to numerous of my friends "parties" and not only am I sick of the products but have also yet to meet anyone who has made anything other than pocket money doing it.

beachysandy81 · 03/06/2020 13:45

My friend has started this and is doing it while home schooling. She has some good deals so why wouldn't I buy from her rather than the shop itself if it's something I wanted to buy anyway?

Notredamn · 03/06/2020 13:46

Bluesheep I could be down to my last penny and I still wouldn't scam my friends and family and try to recruit other skint people.
These schemes taking off rely on other less well off people losing more money than you. The products are just the legal loophole/front. You can only get on if you recruit- and con others into spending their last money on start up packs.

ScarletFever · 03/06/2020 13:46

@Averyyounggrandmaofsix

I thought the latest thing was perfume that smells like something else.
oh yeah the perfume that is made in the same factories, but isnt a copy....?
myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/06/2020 13:48

My Yoooooooooooooooooonique bot has only been going a few weeks and is already trying to recruit more suckers to her team.....literally the only people buying from her is her daughter and daughter in law....how can you exploit your own family to make a sale...just get a proper fucking job where you dont have to hassle your loved ones.

Smallsteps88 · 03/06/2020 13:49

Yes my old manager sold Avon the old way- she just brought a book into work and left it on the staff room lunch table. Never any pressure to buy. She never even mentioned it was there. She got regular orders and a steady income from that. No website or Facebook selling. I wonder how the new style of selling has affected her.
