To still eat chocolate on a diet.

I’m managing to roughly stick to 12.000 calories a day. My dd says if I’m serious about losing weight I shouldn’t really be eating chocolate. I’m sick of saying I’m incorporating it into my daily intake. For instance a small kit Kat is 104 calories. As long as I count it in it’s ok right?

Of course it's OK.

And if you eat 2, you can of course do a bit more exercise to compensate.

I'm not sure that skipping lunch and eating 2 KitKats instead of 1 is going to enable you to lose weight quickly, but you have to do whatever gets you through.

Your DD is not the diet police - you, and only you, are responsible for what you put in your mouth!

Pinkblueberry · 02/06/2020 18:02

Do you exercise? If I was dieting and exercising I would have one. If I wasn’t then I would avoid the chocolate. I think another problem is that a small Kit Kat isn’t very filling - when you’re only eating 1200 calories I think what you put in your body needs to be high quality food that keeps you feeling as good and full as possible.

PoloNeckKnickers · 02/06/2020 18:03

There's no point cutting out chocolate if you like it. To keep any weight off you will have to eat like this for ever and ever, so eat the foods you enjoy in smaller amounts.

Of course you don’t have to eat in the same way as you diet forever. Maintaining weight and losing weight are very different things.

I eat 1400 - 1500 calories a day on my diet & include a small Wispa bar of 139 calories plus in this weather an ice lolly 59 calories.

What I meant was that if you cut a food out of your diet while you're losing weight, it will be very hard to reintroduce it sensibly when you are maintaining. Hmm

I lost 20lb in about 2 months eating what I wanted to keeping roughly to 1200 calories most days. Most days I ate relatively healthily like salads so I could eat more, other days I had a Big Mac! But everyday, everyday, I had chocolate.

Sweettea1 · 02/06/2020 20:01

It's absolutely fine I lost 3stone doing a calorie control diet never felt hungry an cod have a bit of what I fancied when I wanted. Altho at first I forgot about the calories in drinks haha but yes the diet will work and it helps to teach you about eating in moderation instead of completely cutting it out you will be more likely to quit if you have to cut it out

Purpleguitar · 02/06/2020 20:03

Keep having the chocolate! I lost over 5 stone three years ago and I ate chocolate every day. It made me happy and stopped me from binging. I counted calories and lost weight steadily each week.

pinacoladalover · 02/06/2020 20:33

I disagree. If I start eating chocolate I will crave it more and more, I have always been like that. Sugar creates addiction and the body then craves sugar to function. I found if I stopped completely I will be miserable for a week but after that the craving is gone. I don't say to not eat sugar at all (I still use normal sugar in my coffee and have the odd sugary drink) in the end is healthier than the chemicals that replace sugar like aspartame but giving in to chocolate will sustain the addiction. Cut it off and you won't need it anymore, this is what I did.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2020 20:36

It's dead calories. And on 1200 a day you want to make sure you're actually eating enough vitamins and minerals.

I low carb though so no Kit Kats for me. And they are Nestle so my DD wouldn't let me even if I wanted to.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 02/06/2020 20:36

I wouldn't worry too much about a week of standstill, to be honest, could be water weight, hormones or anything.

This. If you're plateauing for a month or more then there might be a reason for it, but I'd not worry too much about a one week standstill (even if it is understandably very frustrating when you are only on 1200 cal/day).

lampygirl · 02/06/2020 20:42

Cadbury darkmilk buttons. 6 or so in a little bowl with strawberries and raspberries. Gets your chocolate fix but isn’t a whole lot and still feels a little bit indulgent and sweet. I’ve lost 4kg or so in lockdown and this is a staple with a film in the evening.

AlwaysAnotherName · 02/06/2020 20:43

It doesn't matter WHAT you eat, as long as it's under your calorie goal.
I've lost weight eating pizza, chocolate and Burger King.
I do find it more effective for me to eat more of lower calorie foods to fill me up, but it doesn't matter really.
I restrict nothing, I just plan it all out so it fits in with the calories I am "allowed"

A bit of scurvy never did anyone any harm. Grin

notheragain4 · 02/06/2020 21:03

@pinacoladalover see if I can't have something I crave it and want it more and inevitably binge, if I allow myself something while being mindful of it being in moderation then I can have a small amount of it, not make it into a big thing and remain a healthy weight. I think everyone has a different mindset with these things, my mum is more of an all or nothing person, that doesn't suit me.

pinacoladalover · 03/06/2020 05:42

Nothergain I agree different things work for different people. I have the same think you say with other foods, like bacon (I eat when I want a little) bread (I love bread I know I would never give it up but keep the fresh french baguette as a treat and use the seeded one instead) but maybe I am not such a chocolate lover to want it all the time. But I definetly get into a habit to eat it daily if I start again, don't know why. That's why cold turkey is best for me. The ideea is to not overthink it and make big deal out of it. But ladies, 1200 cals is sustaining? When you will start eating more (1600 cals example ) then won't you put on weight much faster? Just curious as body goes to function on very little when you eat normally won 't it cope less better with keeping the weight off or maintaining?

notheragain4 · 03/06/2020 08:38

@pinacoladalover yes I could never be that person who won't eat bread! Bread always seems to be the culprit for others and they will say "I can't lose weight when I eat bread" but I'm assuming they mean it takes them over calories, I've never had an issue with any food so long as it's within the calories.

I was on 1200 calories, it was fine. Typical day: breakfast banana, lunch: jacket potato, dinner: chicken salad, snacks of fruit and a 200 calorie chocolate bar. No calories in drinks. It was plenty. Some of the weight has creeped back on slowly over 2 years (I was never overweight just top of healthy bmi) I'm trying to up exercise instead of counting calories again as it was a bit consuming and I don't want to "diet" as it's temporary and as I'm in the healthy range I need to find a lifestyle now rather than diet. So doing couch to 5k to see if that helps me maintain better instead.
