To think millions of people are about to be disenfranchised and to feel so powerless

Apologies if there is already a thread about this; I couldn't see one.

I am appalled by the move to end remote participation in parliament and online voting, which will have the impact of seriously limiting the amount of MPs who can participate at a time when scrutiny and debate are more crucial than they have ever been.

i can't believe there isn't more uproar about it tbh. There's no real government condemnation of Trump's reaction to events over there because we're about to crash out of the EU and want a deal with him, the Covid 'strategy', such as it was has completely fallen apart and now parliament is about to be stymied. What is happening to this country and aibu to feel pretty hopeless and terrified atm?

I agree with you OP, disgraceful lack of leadership on online/remote working for a start, could have modelled it fantastically. Of course, I think they want MP's back otherwise they might all get too free thinking and start voting in ways not already approved of by the government...

ShinyFootball · 02/06/2020 17:55

JRM has insisted on this.

The motivations are transparent.

On the news now. It's totally out of order.

lljkk · 02/06/2020 17:57

isn't this situation so that Johnson can have braying supporters during PMQ? The Lords have pointedly kept remote working going.

Redolent · 02/06/2020 18:00

They absolutely must ban the braying. All those virus-laden respiratory particles wafting around… Just like the super spreader choirs.

And the vote passes with a large majority, just like I said. Democracy operating as it should Smile

ShinyFootball · 02/06/2020 18:03

I don't think you understand the basics of our parliamentary democracy set up, cendrillon.

Pepperwort · 02/06/2020 18:05

I'm not sure where you are Cendrillon, but I suggest you start reading up about how the Roman Republic became corrupt and was twisted into an Empire which, on the whole, lurched from one crisis to another before finally collapsing altogether, amid crises of legitimacy, migration, cultural conflicts, social inequality conflicts, environmental damage leading to economic damage, and possibly plague as well.

Our demographic levels are unprecedented: any resulting population collapse will be equally unprecedented. You sound quite gleeful about it all. Do you really feel that lucky?

CendrillonSings · 02/06/2020 18:10

Eh? The Empire lasted for 400 years and was quite a successful civilisation on the whole, so I wouldn’t let myself get overwhelmed by your word-salad of doom and gloom if I were you.

BlackberryCane · 02/06/2020 18:15

This is about trying to stop Johnson getting humiliated quite so comprehensively by Keir Starmer, not the outcome of any actual votes.

PatriciaHolm · 02/06/2020 18:21

Parliament has just had a physical only vote on whether it should allow physical only voting, which is a piece of convoluted political engineering in itself.

The vote won by 242 to 185, a majority of 57. However, this means some 223 MPs didn't vote, mostly because they cannot because they cannot attend Parliament physically right now, because they or a member of their household is shielding/vulnerable. I think it's pretty safe to say that more than 57 of these MPs would have voted against having the voted removed from them, had they been able to.

runrunrunrunt · 02/06/2020 18:22

Ahh @NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite her you are again defending Tories no matter what.

Thankfully I couldn't give a shit if you think I'm intelligent or articulate.

I said what I said and I stand by it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Big cheesy grinning faces about an outdated majority when the government are running the country into the ground and losing the trust of all (apart from grinning idiots like the OP) is pretty repulsive tbh

Pepperwort · 02/06/2020 18:29

Well if I will generalise about such a large period of time Smile, but do you think the people in its closing years or the immediate aftermath thought about how successful it was? Do you really see so many rays of light, hope and improvement right now?
You are a change of pace I guess, but is it really appropriate to be rubbing your glee at the sight of collapsing economies and democracy into the rest of us?

Hey - please don't confuse me (the OP) with Cendrillion I'm far from grinning about this. And I do agree with what you said about the aforementioned.

Apologies!!! Sorry OP! 🙈

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 02/06/2020 18:37

Seems like discrimination to me apart from the problem of not being democratic.

ShinyFootball · 02/06/2020 18:59

Yes it is nomore.

They have removed the people who are more likely to care about poverty, minority groups etc in one easy move.

zscaler · 02/06/2020 19:16

But OP, it’s completely relevant that the Tories have a huge parliamentary majority. Every vote will go their way because of that. People are disenfranchised by the FPTP system, not by the end of online voting for MPs.

MintyMabel · 02/06/2020 19:26

The rich white men will be fine. Just like the rich white man who pushed for it. Can anyone think why JRM “I never changed a nappy in my life” is pushing to be able to leave the house full of 6 kids behind daily?

KizzyWayfarer · 02/06/2020 19:31

I find it really scary. It’s such a naked display of not giving a fuck about democracy. They know it violates basic rights and established principles, risks the health of MPs and is utterly ridiculous and unnecessary. They know that we can see that too, And they are laughing knowing they can get away with it. What next?

SabrinaThwaite · 02/06/2020 19:35

No, it’s not democracy at all. It’s disenfranchising a large number of MPs and their constituents.

Hopoindown31 · 02/06/2020 19:35

Surely lockdown should have taught you that where there is a crisis there are selfish bastards ready to take advantage?

Hopoindown31 · 02/06/2020 19:36

Oops wrong thread!

SabrinaThwaite · 02/06/2020 19:38

Oops wrong thread!

Applies equally well on this one.

How was that legal? A decision being made without a sizeable number of current MPs votes?
