To think the RAF shouldn't do this

I was rudely awoken at around 3am this morning by an RAF plane flying fast and low (c 600ft) above my house. I honestly thought it was coming down; it was so loud and scared the shit out of all of us.
I appreciate the need for training but... IT WAS 3 O'CLOCK in the morning??! We live a long way (150 ish miles) from Brize Norton where this plane came from (and indeed we aren't close to any airport / airfield), so low flying aircraft sounds are very unusual.

AIBU to think they should fly low elsewhere at night (like out at sea )? I probably am, but fancied a moan as I'm very tired this morning.

@Starcup I do have a slightly irrational fear of planes crashing into houses. I'm fine when I'm in them but hate seeing them overhead when I'm on the ground. Probably explains why this bothered me so much

I actually think small leisure planes and helicopters shouldn’t be allowed in residential and built up areas at all! If their engines had to fail then there’s a good chance people on the ground would be killed. I can’t stand seeing or hearing them.

I thought part of the role of the RAF was to protect our skies - had it crossed your mind, OP, that they had scrambled because of an alert?



I know my background is Army not RAF, but I'm really struggling to come up with a scenario which involves scrambling a Hercules!!

(I can think of many types of night training, in case anyone was thinking of drawing the wrong inference that I'm saying they don't fly at night)

I’m the same. I can’t stand seeing them at all. I don’t mind RAF ones just because I know they are working/training etc although I would get a fright too, but it’s those leisure ones flying above, circling around. I detest them, I really do.

I used to live in the Scottish Borders and lots of jets trained there low flying. It was quite interesting to be on the hills and the jets were below you. It was also 'interesting' when they went overhead when you were on a hill on a horse... I remember jets flying over Lake Windermere one time we were there and we could see the wheels in the base of the plane, even though they were retracted.

Flight tracker apps don’t work using radar. They use ADS-B signals.

My Mum lives in Cumbria and had this. Really screechy jets coming over really fast. My stepfather rang the RAF and asked them not to fly over that specific area - old people’s complex in a village and they stopped doing so.

You do see them in the Lakes, but it is unexpected if it’s your home in the middle of the night.

The RAF Brize Norton FB page is very good at giving notice of where their aircraft are training, but it makes no mention of any night training last night. Could be an oversight, could indicate that it wasn’t in fact a training flight.

Those complaining about the racket a Typhoon makes have clearly never had the pleasure of standing underneath an Avro Vulcan during a low pass.

One of the most amazing and unforgettable experiences of my life. Yes, the Typhoon is noisy, but the sound the Vulcan made was another kind of experience altogether. Almost rapture-like it was so visceral. You could feel the frequencies rattling around inside your chest cavity. I fell in love with them the first time I ever witnessed one in the flesh at about 5 years old, am still utterly fascinated with them, and genuinely shed a tear when the last one stopped flying.

There's a static one on display just down the road, but it's not the same. If I had the sort of money required I'd put my hand in my pocket to get one back in the air in a heartbeat.

Many of those planes will, in fact, belong to flight schools - some of which will be training the pilots who go on to fly the jets that benefit many people and have set routes.

FlightRadar24 and others respect the privacy flag that military aircraft and private jets set on their ADS-B broadcast, so they won’t show up.

We live not far from Whaley Bridge where the dam nearly broke last summer. Our house appeared to be used as a waypoint for the Chinooks (ie fly from the ballast drop off straight and turn at that house on the hill). Luckily only during that day.....starting at 6am, those things are NOISY!! Got some great photos but bloody awful for trying to get a baby to nap!

If you think the Hercules is noisy you need to hear the fighter jets doing a fast low pass , and even better, as said above, the Vulcan. I live very near a airport that used to be a RAF airbase and it was a regular thing to have fast jets sneaking up on you and the noise they made was awesome.

Every pilot starts in one of those small single engine jets
