Bleeding from bottom sorry tmi

A few times recently I've noticed tiny spots of bright red blood when wiping. Tonight there was quite a bit more. Not loads but a noticeable amount. This has happened to me before a few years ago and I saw my GP who examined me and concluded it was piles - had painless bumps in that area since pregnancy - lovely. But no bleeding since so I didn't really worry. This has scared me a bit though. I'm only in my 30s but of course you always think the worst when you see something like that. My doctor is only doing telephone appointments at the minute and I think based on what happened before they would just say it's the piles again.

I don't have any other bowel issues - occasional mild IBS but nothing serious. No pain either. Can someone reassure me I'm freaking out a bit.

Can we please put to bed once and for all this totally incorrect information that is trotted out on here so regularly. Bright red blood is not necessarily harmless. Rectal and colon cancer will cause bright red bleeding. While the chances are that it may be piles or a fissure, more serious complaints cannot be ruled out just because the bleeding is bright red.

Cactusmum · 02/06/2020 16:09

Could be anal fissure also, but def have a chat to GP about it. Hope for your sake its not a fissure tho, they can be a nightmare. :-(

Mangofandangoo · 02/06/2020 16:11

Best to get it checked but try not to worry ( hard I know) I'm sure there's any number of explanations for it Thanks

chuntersalot · 02/06/2020 16:52

Could also be IBD (Crohns or Ulcerative Colitis) near or in the rectum. Bleeding from inflammation in that area can be bright red. It was the only symptom my son had before his IBD diagnosis, he had no pain, urgency, diarrhoea or anything else at all.

A stool sample to look at Fecal Calprotectin levels should be an option.

Jellybelly15 · 02/06/2020 17:17

No more bleeding today which is a relief. Also a bit of soreness and stinging around the affected area which makes me think it's likely to be down to the piles as the pain is localised to that area (externally). So hopefully nothing too serious but I will speak to my GP when it's practical to do so. I'm only wary about it because last time I had the exact same complaint they just examined me, diagnosed piles and sent me on my way. Don't really want to risk going to the surgery just for a repeat of that.

Please make that appointment OP. This is early signs for bowel cancer, hopefully it's not at all, but I have a friend who also thought the blood was just piles and a bit of IBS, it wasn't and by the time she was diagnosed it was stage 3 bowel cancer.

Hello, my first post for around 15 years. I was a member when Mumsnet first started. My kids are grown up now.

On 12/7/2020 I was diagnosed with colon cancer. My symptoms were anaemia and a single bleed of bright red blood. I had no other symptoms at all. Looking at the list of known symptoms, I had only one of them.

Thankfully my GP was on the ball and sent me straight for blood tests and a colonoscopy (not embarrassing at all). At the colonoscopy a 2cm tumour was identified. It was removed on 28/8/20.

All I wanted to say is pushed for further tests. Get bloods done too.

Try over the counter ointment and get a telephone consult if it doesn't settle.

bloodywhitecat · 07/09/2020 18:43

Surgeries are safe places to be. If the doctor feels you need to be examined they will offer you a face-to-face appointment in a safe environment. Chances are it's nothing but we have just lost an ex-colleague to bowel cancer, her symptoms were innocuous at first so she delayed going, when she did get seen she was diagnosed with advanced cancer and died 11 months later just after her 36th birthday.

Rollmopsrule · 07/09/2020 18:49

Dr will see you to check this. Will prob be piles but best to check.

TheFuckingDogs · 07/09/2020 18:51

Obviously going to the doctor is best but I actually had this same issue during lockdown and I had a telephone convo with Dr. He advised a few days of gentle laxatives and it did sort it out

Please get checked! Sometimes you can drop off a stool sample and they can check that with certain things.
No point taking any chances.

Tmi - defo piles, I’ve had them on and off since LO was born. Bright, red blood is not the worrying blood, dark is the worrying blood.

helpwithhouse · 07/09/2020 19:15

Hi OP
Pleeeeease make an appointment to get checked ASAP.
I had the same, although the bleeding and soreness gradually got worse.
While I did go straight to my GP no-one really took it seriously...no-one actually looked they just kept saying it was piles until a few months later someone checked and said it was a fissure. I ended up with chronic fissures (and piles!) which were excruciating. I've now had an operation and everything seems to be going back to normal but please get checked.
Ok, mine was never life threatening but it's not a nice operation to have...

Paranoidmarvin · 07/09/2020 19:39

Piles. I get this.

MactheRover · 07/09/2020 20:06

Go to the Doc. I had piles bleeding, but when checked also had a malignant rectal tumour - I was 35 - sorted by surgery - Most probably piles but see GP.

Elieza · 07/09/2020 20:37

Does no harm to contact the GP. Now would be the time to do it before the winter flu season starts. He won’t put you at risk or those working in the surgery at risk. Don’t worry.

Are you drinking enough water and eating enough veg? Improve your diet and that should help.

Have your hormones changed recently? On the pill or anything. I know from being peri menopausal that one of my symptoms I’d kiss if oestrogen is loss if elasticity. I tear rather than stretch now.
