And who decided that 9 - 13, 14 ish has to be a new group for marketing, and wearing those adult-like, almost aggressive (can't think of a better word) fashions?? I'm not advertising sexuality for a 'tween' or whatever they're called, creepy men can get their kicks somewhere else. I just want something nice that suits the weather! I hate hate HATE clothes shopping.

It's lockdown, so I haven't had my act together and wanted to get some summer tops for my dd, 11. Designers - summer is hot, and the sun burns. What you need is something covering the shoulders, light, loose, in natural cool fabrics and nice prints. Something patterned in nice colours.

NO MORE damned slogans or flipping' unicorns or what-have-you, scrap animal prints. Ffs ditch the polyester, and kill the 'cold shoulder' rubbish already!!

HOW HARD IS IT??? REALLY?

Ahem. As you were. And if anyone could possibly point me to some nice simple (very simple, I can use a sewing machine but I'm not a whizz) and new sewing patterns for tunic and 'peasant blouse' types, assuming I get my act together next year, I would be eternally grateful.

Crap clothes are on sale because people buy them.

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 14:17

Most of DD's shorts come from the "boy" section. It's the only place we can find ones of a decent length.

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 14:18

Crap clothes are on sale because people buy them.

People can only buy what's available.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 01/06/2020 14:18

This is nice ...

To ask what idiots design girls' clothes??
GreenTulips · 01/06/2020 14:20

Yep!

Plus they all have pink on them in some form or other everything. T-shirt’s tops leggings swimwear nightwear

Why? And f-img unicorns

Clymene · 01/06/2020 14:24

Lands End have some quite reasonably sized shorts for girls

ChilliCheese123 · 01/06/2020 14:25

@MintyMabel they’re something you’d wear at a dance or gym competition to be fair. I don’t think it’s to draw attention to the kids bums it’s just a design thing they will often have a matching hoodie or top with their name across the back also.

ParsnipToast · 01/06/2020 14:26

Someone else has already mentioned LandsEnd, just want to second them. Their skorts are great and last well. They have them in some plainer colours and patterns and they were on sale a couple of days ago.

John Lewis can also be good. I struggle because I also have one of those tall just 9 year olds who have to wear age 11/12. And who wants clothes to be comfy which means cotton with flat seams and waists. And preferably no waists on dresses. It is getting harder to dress her.

Pepperwort · 01/06/2020 14:27

Pink. Don't start me on pink.

I agree with MintyMabel - we have no choice but to buy what's in the shops. I can make my own as long as they're simple, but it's time (and planning).

My dd said she wanted something with dragons on it. Not unicorns (proud).

What’s wrong with pink?

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 14:28

I don’t think it’s to draw attention to the kids bums it’s just a design thing they will often have a matching hoodie or top with their name across the back also.

But it draws attention nonetheless. "It's for dancing" doesn't make it any less inappropriate. In fact, that seems like the bog standard argument for sexualising young girls. Never the boys though, why is that do you think?

No reason the name can't be running down the leg.

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 14:29

What’s wrong with pink?

DD hates it. And it's usually a pale pink which gets dirty very quickly.

ChilliCheese123 · 01/06/2020 14:29

It’s not for dancing, it’s what you put on between sections/routines usually

I find it a bit weird you’d look at a pre pubescent child with those joggers on and think it looks sexual.

Lordfrontpaw · 01/06/2020 14:30

Try and outdoorsy type shop. I often buy the large kids stuff for myself (cool, long sleeved t-shirts and shirts) from 'adventure' stores, and also loathe the rainbow/unicorn/glitter/dubious slogan nonsense.

Pepperwort · 01/06/2020 14:31

There's nothing wrong with pink as a colour, in its place. What's wrong with turquoise, purple, and orange? Why does it always have to be pink?

JoysOfString · 01/06/2020 14:32

Uniqlo for cotton tops / t-shirts with cool prints but no awful slogans
Gap
Boden for the long shorts

OverZoomed · 01/06/2020 14:34

@ChilliCheese123 Thanks, but she doesn’t want currently want sportswear but cotton or jersey for everyday, I’ll bear those in mind for when she grows out of her current sports skort, though.

And thanks to all those recommending Lands End - their skorts look good. Still nothing in tops she likes - she won’t wear pink, frills or anything that she sees as girly and babyish. And we now have the worry about it showing her crop top straps, which she worries about.

Nquartz · 01/06/2020 14:37

I struggle to get shorts/dresses/skirts for DD as she is quite tall for her age & her size are all so short! If I size up they hang off her & are big round the waist.

An 8 year old doesn't need to be showing most of her thighs Angry

totallynotchanging · 01/06/2020 14:38

Lands end are brilliant. I like the look of This top with rocketships on for girls - it's just so refreshing. Not all girls want endless flipping "Be Kind" type slogans or unicorns. https://www.landsend.co.uk/GirlsRuffleeHemGraphiccTunicTopp/pp/P40661.html?cgid=14634&dwvarr_P406611color=%20MAF

PumpkinP · 01/06/2020 14:38

Hmm see I disagree about pink, maybe for little girls but I can rarely get dd anything that it pink (she loves it) as older girls clothes imo seem to be much darker colours, brown, khaki a very popular one! Navy , black, grey.

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 14:38

I find it a bit weird you’d look at a pre pubescent child with those joggers on and think it looks sexual.

I find it a bit weird you consider drawing attention to a pre-teen girl's arse appropriate. I ask again, why ok for girl's clothing but not for boys?

MintyMabel · 01/06/2020 14:40

Not all girls want endless flipping "Be Kind" type slogans or unicorns.

It's also the vast difference between girl and boy slogans. Girls are born to sparkle, boys are born to lead.

And they wonder why gender roles are still a thing.

moonbells · 01/06/2020 14:41

I second somewhere like Go Outdoors or Mountain Warehouse. Lots of practical gear, hard-wearing and usually free of glitter :)

Spied · 01/06/2020 14:45

Tu Sainsburys have some nice appropriate things in at the moment.

ChilliCheese123 · 01/06/2020 14:46

I don’t see bums as inherently sexual though so we’ll have to agree to disagree
