AIBU to ask what your WFH jobs are

Wondering if people could tell me what jobs they do and in what industry that allowed WFH before covid hit? I have never come across one that will even entertain the idea but with DC I would really appreciate that flexibility but they don't seem to exist (not in the immediate future but in the coming years!)
AIBU to feel like they don't exist!

Another software engineer here. So is DH.

notheragain4 · 01/06/2020 13:07

@icedpurple I think it's possibly already happening (on a very small scale perhaps!), some jobs in my field that are US based have been advertised in the UK to WFH as they're after a particular set of expertise.

sportinguista · 01/06/2020 13:07

I'm a graphic designer but I work for myself so I allow me to work from home as I'm the boss. My job is pretty easy to do from home.

Policy/communications for a pharmaceutical company.

Dk20 · 01/06/2020 13:11

Working in finance.

About half of the staff were allowed to WFH 2 days a week before lockdown, others were allowed 2 days per month.

As weve all managed and met deadlines while wfh, theyre only going to send people back into the office who are finding it difficult at home.

I doubt I'll be back in the office this year.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 01/06/2020 13:11

I’m an electronics engineers now moving to software development (husband’s been a software developer for 20+ years from home). Specialist client we’ve both been with in various capacities for years. Self employed but permanent whenever this COVID stuff ends (IR35 deferred until next year at least, phew).

@bottledwatery There are lots of routes into tech. Some people do bootcamps like NorthCoders as a fast way in. Some people get degrees. For me, I came in through Open Source - so literally I just joined projects and submitted code and learned that way. I don't have any relevant qualifications.

The advantage of this for someone without credentials is that employers can see your code. If you can code then you can get work - that's the bottom line in tech. It so happened that a couple of the FOSS projects I worked on became famous so now I have a good reputation based on that.

You might not get a super fancy $500,000 job at Google but you'll always get a gig somewhere if you can show that you can ship working code on time. That's ALL you need.

I work for an online estate agent. Most of what I do is done from home. I am not doing the photos at houses at the moment. I don't ever go to the office.

bottledwatery · 01/06/2020 13:18

Thank you @lojoko

dobbyssoc · 01/06/2020 13:19

Thanks everyone. Very interesting reads. My prior experience is all within Admin roles (most being in educational settings). Given me some options to think about.

Civil service.

By the way don’t mistakenly think it means without interruption! I don’t have kids but Im interrupted by ..parcels being delivered ( not even ours) , building and cleaning work next door, WiFi issues , you get more emails than usual, the faff of making sure you are somewhere suitable for a video call, you have to banish the family from where you are working etc.

Wolfff I'd be I'd be interested to know how you got in to that.

MummyOfZog · 01/06/2020 13:38

Solicitor working in-house for a company.

We were able to WFH prior to Covid, and I've always worked from home 2 days a week but now fully WFH for all of 2020 due to Covid. I may ask to WFH as default after Covid lifts though, with the option of going into the office when needed.

Wolfff · 01/06/2020 13:39

I joined the CS about 20 years ago and have done a lot of jobs and jumped through a lot of hoops. There have been many more opportunities in the last few years.
