Are bagpipes the most anti-social instrument ever?

I say this as a Scot!
Have just moved to a new build estate which is not even completed yet. There is someone who has been playing bagpipes (badly) for the last week every day for about an hour. The sound is carrying clearly right across the estate, I'm pretty sure its coming from quite far away but its still very loud and noticeable when sitting in the garden. I feel bad for their direct neighbours!
I can't imagine ever thinking that playing bagpipes is acceptable when I know people are trying to relax in their gardens etc. Do you think instruments like bagpipes should be played at home or in a setting like a community hall etc? I know they need to practice but they are just so LOUD (and annoying when badly played). Sorry to anyone who plays the bagpipes!

When my daughter first took up violin, she used to have to go practise in the sleepout with the door locked, or the cat would hunt her down and violently attack her. When the cat stopped attacking her the instant she got her violin out, we took it as a very positive sign of progress.

What's the difference between a trampoline and bagpipes?

You take your shoes off to jump on a trampoline Wink

There is a guy who practises the bag pipes out in the country around here (Midlands). Not always the same location, you just randomly come across him in a layby or on a footpath. Very weird but quite atmospheric.

It's not great but if they're practicing for an hour a day they're bound to get better.

I like the bagpipes, played well, outdoors at a specific event like the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

Someone practising the bagpipes badly, in the garden next door proves the saying that a Scottish gentleman is one who can play the bagpipes - but doesn't!

YANBU. They are an abomination and seem to get wheeled out at every occasion at the moment even south of the border. They set my teeth on edge at the first wail of them "warming up".

TrickyKid · 01/06/2020 13:32

Yanbu awful sound and impossible to tell if they're being played badly or not.

I find them very nostalgic - I’m Scottish decent although I can see if you hear them everyday how annoying they could be!!

I adore bagpipes. One of my dreams is to stay at a castle in Scotland and have a piper play at my waking time! (Just like the late QM).

HaudMaDug · 05/06/2020 12:21

Also a Scot and I cannot agree more and I'd issue bad pipers with ASBO's. (Looking at you Dad.)
Love a good harmonised pipe band but the amateur cat stuck in the bag puffers in their kilts and rugby shirts whilst the nation clapped for the carers brought the wrong kind of tears to my eyes.
Hated the racket of the pots and pans bangers too though.
God I've turned into a grumpy old loon.

I love bagpipes and had a piper at my wedding. I came down the aisle to Highland Cathedral. However, they need to be played well.

My brother started learning to play them as a teenager and it was hell listening to him practice. He gave up after a year because the dog started howling every time.

Did you know that Carbisdale is now being restored into a private home? Complete with spa in the basement. Not quite how I remember it. Perhaps the spirit of whoever-it-was will haunt the ramparts with his bagpipes.

I didn’t do Carbisdale but my DD’s did. Well it was called Carbisdale but they didn’t stay in the castle because it was closed. Highlight of they schooldays. I also know someone who went as a teacher, not a bagpipe playing one.
