It's going to be really difficult to travel without a car

At least for the time being. Double decker buses here are only going to allow 11 people on each one and drive past stops when they are full until someone disembarks. I've been reading through the guidelines for travelling on LNER and basically it's going to be pretty much impossible to rely on getting anywhere for a specific time. I haven't got as far as looking at TPExpress but I guess they will be similar. I don't have a car and don't want one but I feel like I am going to be stranded without one.

Perhaps some buses - maybe every other one, or every third, on a route, should be designated for people who have disabilities, rather like the blue badge scheme?

BubblesBuddy · 01/06/2020 09:53

Rural business stops have miles between villages. Walking to another one or even further is often miles and miles. It simply won’t get people back to work!

Macncheeseballs · 01/06/2020 10:29

I've never needed a car to get to work

ivykaty44 · 01/06/2020 10:32

I can see scooter sales going up along with L plates.

Bikes are pretty much sold out anyway

Clockworkprincess · 01/06/2020 10:38

I'm lucky, for me work is walking distance... Its a pain though as after a day in work no one fancies walking 40 mins but i suppose thats just how it has to be right now. We have on car but its soft me using it when dp can get more use etc. At the very least i shouls be in shape by the time i would feel comfortable getting the bus again

DGRossetti · 01/06/2020 11:18

Of course this is pretty much everyday life for wheelchair users who want to use buses (even worse if they need to use them).

Aubergined · 01/06/2020 11:38

maybe think about changing your life circumstances, move nearer to work, change jobs, plenty of people are thinking of changing their lives now

I work at several sites all around town. Which one would you suggest I move nearest?

Macncheeseballs · 01/06/2020 11:58

I don't know, you have to try your best yo make your life circumstances work for you but I dont really understand the philosophy of moaning about something without even looking for any kind of possible solutions and sometimes that means making changes, small or big

BubblesBuddy · 01/06/2020 12:07

I guess we can all try and sell up in the countryside and move to towns. Leave the countryside to retired people. Or maybe we all change jobs at the drop of a hat with millions now unemployed? Yes, it’s that easy to just up sticks and change what you do.

However getting and driving a car is what the govt says we should do. Parking though? They could be interesting.

Yep, and yet every time there's someone who complains about the cost of living, the lack of space etc, there's always a load of people who tell you to move out of town Hmm
Macncheeseballs · 01/06/2020 12:29

So choose what's right for you. There are people who make it work for them, its not always impossible

I don't believe anyone has said it's impossible. However your suggestions aren't exactly helpful. It's very easy to say change jobs, move house, but they're not exactly realistic options for many people.

Even for those in a position to do so moving house / jobs isn't usually a quick processes, so it could be several weeks / months before doing so would solve any transport problem.

Kokeshi123 · 01/06/2020 12:44

Biden needs to come up with a clear firm statesmanlike response that condemns the behavior of the police in these protests AND condemns the looters and arsonists as well, otherwise we are going to be stuck with another four years of the orange-faced loon being in charge.

Kokeshi123 · 01/06/2020 12:45

Whoops, wrong thread!

wolfmom · 01/06/2020 12:50

I'm another household of 3 adults, all medically unfit to drive and whilst I used to have a bike (and loved it) my health is such that a bike is not a workable solution added to the fact the only place I need to use public transport for involves going through the mersey tunnel

AgentCooper · 01/06/2020 12:56

Where are you reading this? And at what stage are they suggesting this comes in?

I’m in Scotland, admittedly, but there are plenty of buses going past my house every day. I haven’t heard any new rules re: public transport.

happysunr1se · 01/06/2020 13:02

I live in South London.
To get to work in West London I normally have to walk 20 minutes to a tram, then onto a train and then switch to a second train.
Each leg of the journey would take an additional 40+ minutes to complete by foot.

I'm dreading the journey when I return to work on the 16th June! But there really is no alternative.

My journey normally takes 1 hour 20 mins, how much longer is my journey going to take if I'm not allowed to get on the first
or subsequent tram or train(s) because they're already too full when they arrive at my stop?

I can't move nearer to work, I already live in the cheapest housing in the cheapest Borough.

Macncheeseballs · 01/06/2020 13:09

Grimms - they may not be suggestions to your liking but they are suggestions, which is a step better than no suggestions, and they do work for some people, myself being one of them

jcurve · 01/06/2020 13:48

I haven’t driven for 10 years and we rely on London’s excellent public transport.

Lockdown is what finally got us to purchase a car as otherwise life is going to be very limited between now and 2021. I don’t cycle and it’s not helpful if you need to go to B&Q or similar.

jcurve · 01/06/2020 13:49

We also have access to car share (Zip Car is parked outside our house) but I haven’t seen the car in daylight hours for weeks - it’s solidly booked.

How big is the town?

I work on sites in 3 neighbouring towns and live between two but 5 miles from the 3rd, this makes it achievable without a car
