i.e if I were to post myself playing an instrument (pop song) say for 20 seconds, do I have to credit the original artist etc? And if it’s only short excerpts eg 20 seconds would that mean that there’s no requirement to do that. Thanks!
Have still to research online about this but thought I’d ask here as well.

I think it depends on the artist/song to be honest, some record labels are very hot on copyright and will get everything unauthorised removed on behalf of their acts. Others are more lax and only get involved if the poster is making money from it.

If it’s just you playing the instrument, and not a recording of the original song also, then it will not be automatically found by YouTube.

For your video to be taken down, there would have to be a copyright claim made. Which would really only happen if your videos have AdSense, and are monetised. Do you make money from your videos?

Sacha- thanks. I haven’t started yet but I didn’t intend to make money unless I got so many views that there ended up being adverts before the posts- which I doubt!
If it’s only a case of playing the instrument and not a recording of the song hopefully I wouldn’t need to worry?
If it ended up that I got so many views(unlikely) that there were adverts I wonder if anyone could still make a claim if the song excerpts were say 20 seconds or less?..

There is a legal section on here with some very knowledgable legal people

Ah, I really wouldn’t worry about it then, unless, like you say, you end up with enough unique views per month that you’re offered to join AdSense, and that wouldn’t be for a good while yet if you’re just getting started.

Play your music, and let everybody enjoy seeing and hearing it!

YouTube uses programmes to automatically detect copyrighted materials by searching for familiar patterns in sound and images, e.g. a copyrighted song, or a scene from a film. That’s why people who upload films to YouTube flip the image, or insert the image into a screensaver, or slow the soundtrack by 30%. To trick the programme.

If you’re playing the instrument yourself, you will be creating a new sound, so you don’t need to worry about being “found”. I don’t know the exact logistics for music, as to what you would need to do further down the line if you are offered AdSense, but certainly I have seen some creators show clips of them playing piano, etc, and playing popular songs, and there’s been no copyright claims on their videos.

If you do reach that point with your YouTube channel, maybe reach out and get some legal advice, though, because if YouTube gives you three copyright strikes, you end up with your account being deleted!
