to think that cutting "a bit" off of long hair doesn't mean a bob?

Finally went for a haircut this morning (I live abroad). Hair is usually bra-strap length but had grown another 2 inches or so as hadn't been cut since the start of February. Usually I get a trim every 8 weeks. I've been going to the same hairdresser for 6 years, every 8 weeks, and he also highlights my hair. Every time I just have the very ends trimmed.

This morning I said please trim a little more as it has been almost 4 months. At which point he promptly chopped it all off to my neck into a bob style. He cut it with the clippers (as in using them to cut the hair, not to shave it) and just lopped it all off more or less in one go. I was in absolute shock, I think I still am.

My exact words were "trim a little more". Did this mean I was asking for a short cut and didn't realise?

Last year my dh had long hair.
He asked for a couple of inches off.
He was left with a couple of inches ON...
Ime hairdressers take massive risks!!
At least you got your money's worth op!!

What did you say after he did it? I'd have been livid.

PeppermintSoda · 30/05/2020 14:43

This happened to me (although my hair wasn't as long as yours.) I think some hairdressers have always just cut hair into whatever style is fashionable rather than what was asked for!

LaaLaaLanded · 30/05/2020 14:45

You’d think he would remember how long you usually like to have it!

He must have thought you meant a little more from where you usually have it. Otherwise you would have just said ‘the usual please Bob’.

Originally bra strap length as in the band in the middle of your back or bra strap as in the shoulder straps?

I can see how a more than a trim on shoulder bra strap length hair could be neck length, but not if it's the bra band round your ribs.

Plumplumbadum · 30/05/2020 14:47

My experience is that when you've had the same hairdresser for a while that they stop listening and just do what they want. That's why I now make sure I convey EXACTLY what I want so there are no upsets.
I hope you complained and didn't just meekly pay and leave.

KylieJx · 30/05/2020 14:50

I was in shock. It is a good cut but obviously not what I wanted or thought I asked for.

I didn't complain. I'm a very shy person in that kind of situation.

LolaSmiles bra strap as in the one that clasps at the back, down my back.

I've had similar experiences in the past and I just never go back to Edward Scissorhands after they do it.

I've finally found a wonderful hairdresser and I won't be letting him go. He always goes through what I want and then shows me with his fingers on my hair where he will be cutting, and I tell him if I'm happy with that.

I really don't understand what goes through the heads of some hairdressers when I explicitly tell them I'm growing my hair and just want a trim, then they take off six inches!

I had this happen once. I have curly hair. I asked for it down to my arm pits. It ended up chin length. It was a few weeks before my wedding. I was so annoyed.

KylieJx · 30/05/2020 16:22

Thanks, everyone. Fairly sure my instructions weren't ambiguous.

I have to Zoom later with some friends so will try to tie it up somehow.

wrong thread

LolaSmiles · 31/05/2020 11:19

Bloody hell! That's nowhere close to being a little more than your usual trim.

I have super wonderful hairdressers. One time I was having a horrid time at work and thought I'd chop all my hair off. Was talking to my hairdresser at my next appointment and she promised she'd never chop it off. I'd have to ask repeatedly before she'd do it. My current hairdresser is also great and wouldn't chop on a whim.

k1233 · 31/05/2020 11:52

Sometimes I'll get 4" cut off but, being same length as yours, it's not a heap to lose. Just helps keep it healthy and thick.

ShipshapeShore · 31/05/2020 12:01

I have the opposite. I have always wanted mine short, I always get a bob. Even when I say "I don't want a bob, I look like my mother in law." Maybe I will look bloody awful with it short and they're being tactful - I don't know!

Roselilly36 · 31/05/2020 12:03

Oh my goodness that must have been a shock, why did you not say anything?

May have been too late I know, but I would have had to say something.

I think I would also change my hairdresser to be honest, the hairdresser has broken your trust.

Dinomom52 · 31/05/2020 12:06

My last cut I had more off than I expected. I was also shocked.
But I got loads of compliments and within a couple of days, really liked it 😊. Hope it goes the same for you op.

In other news, I cut my youngest hair too short this morning & he HATES it 😖. Hoping it grows really fast in the next 3 weeks before he goes back to school 😳

Elouera · 31/05/2020 12:07

If you live abroad, was it a language barrier and he thought you meant more?

Even if they do speak English, you need to give an exact measurement, rather than just 'a bit'. At least it will grow.

Chochito · 07/06/2020 12:33

That's terrible! Even if you were a bit vague, (and I don't think you were), the hairdresser should have checked which new length you would be happy with. Shock
