Does egg make your dishwasher smell?

Wondering if you can help me with something that’s driving me (and especially DH) mad...

Every time anything that’s been in contact with egg goes in the dishwasher the clean plates have a faint but distinctive smell. It’s not the filters because they get cleaned regularly, and the machine gets a proper clean often too. It’s just an egg thing, but I’m wondering if other people notice it too? The obvious answer is to just not put eggy plates in the dishwasher, but, annoying!

YABU: you’re imagining it, my dishwasher doesn’t smell after egg
YANBU: this is a thing and it’s bloody annoying

If you are familiar with this do you have any solutions?!

@Oilyoilyoilgob a friend made some vegan meringues using chickpea water and I was pleasantly surprised. They were really nice and didn’t have that hint of wet dog.

I’m so glad that it’s not just us, but it definitely isn’t something that bothers everyone...

Ooh that sounds lovely! I like the texture and crunch of meringue but just can’t stomach it! I’ll have a look online for a recipe-thank you.

It’s obviously very divisive, wish I was in the ‘non wet dog smelling’ camp 😅

Youcunnyfunt · 31/05/2020 14:53

Wet dog smell, yes. I hand wash eggy plates.

For some reason drinking glasses pong the most when egg has been washed in a dishwasher (basically cooking egg with all your crockery).

I can always smell drinking glasses at other houses who just bung whatever in their dishwasher. Smelly. Sorry! It’s not a huge deal just something I’m sensitive to. Obviously it doesn’t mean it’s dirty.

It's mostly the things that have touched the raw egg that make the smell so the bowl they were cracked into and the fork that beat them. We don't have a dishwasher but have to wash these things at the end because if they go in with the sink of washing up it will all stink.

FoxyBadger · 31/05/2020 15:14

Totally agree @Flamingolingo, egg does this in dishwasher and I hate it. DH thinks I overreact. I love omelettes and scrambled eggs but get put off by the faff of getting rid of smell after.
Handwash anything the egg has touched but sometimes I can still smell it on plates after and it turns my stomach. My Dad is just the same. Maybe its inherited?

Blibbyblobby · 31/05/2020 15:26

@FoxyBadger we soak in water with washing up liquid and a few drops of bleach before hand washing and it seems to stop the smell. Obviously rinse in clean non-bleachy water after washing.

This is definitely a “thing” - I’ve noticed this with plates that have had mayonnaise on too Envy

Happydaysforever123 · 31/05/2020 15:47

Absolutely, although raw eggs are the worse, I make sure the dog licks anything really well before it goes in the dishwasher!!

TimeWastingButFun · 31/05/2020 15:51

I always rinse eggy plates first.

Flamingolingo · 31/05/2020 16:25

Yes to drinking glasses being the worst! And yes to mayonnaise, though I’ve recently had to buy vegan ‘mayo’ because I’ve noticed mayo tastes and smells too (previously loved the stuff).

I’m not sure what causes it, I expect the sulfur in the egg white reacting with something. It’s not specifically a dishwasher thing though because a while ago, while we were renovating, the hallway smelled like something had died in it. After a long hunt it turned out to be the hob which had had raw egg spilled on it and not wiped thoroughly enough (portable hot plate hob we were using in the hall while the kitchen was a building site)
