To Ask Why 'Smash Hits' is seen now as an '80s Mag'?

I've been engaging in some nostalgia since being on furlough. It was such a shame they got rid of 'Smash Hits' magazine even though I admit the last time I remember buying a copy was 1989.

Anyway, this magazine started in 1978 and finished publication in 2006. Why do you think people are of the opinion the mag had it's heyday in the 80s?

It probably had its highest circulation then.

I only ever bought it in the 80's and early 90's, after then we had the internet for music articles and lyrics etc

I only read it in the 90’s so to me it’s a 90’s mag.
I read Big, more though and had a subscription to that .
I definitely didn’t know it was still being released up until 2006!

Doesn't it depend who you're asking and when they were of the age to buy it? Personally I bought it when I was a pre-teen in the 90s, so would see it as a 90s mag.

It's an early 90s mag for me as that's when I read it the most. I had almost my entire bedroom papered in Take That posters from Smash Hits at one point.

I used to buy it in the 80s. Thought it had died way before it did.

I bought Smash Hits from its first ever issue, probably stopped getting it sometime in the mid 80s. I expect as a pp said its circulation was biggest in the early to mid 80s, hence it being described as an 80s magazine.

I read it in the early 00s. My school library used to have a subscription so I'd read it there and then buy it if I wanted one of the posters!

I'd have said it was a 90s mag and am really surprised it was still running until 2006.

To me it is a 70's magazine as it came out when I was 16 and I bought it every week until I went to uni in 1980, then I stopped as I had other priorities for my money (beer!).

Id say it’s heyday was the 80s as that’s when I Bought it as a teenager.

Because it did. It might have carried on into the 90s and 2000s but it was at its most popular in the 80s.

The magazine's sales peaked during the late 1980s. In the early part of the decade it was regularly selling 500,000 copies per issue, which had risen to over one million by 1989. Sales began to drop during the 1990s and by 1996 it was reported that sales were dropping roughly 100,000 per year.[4] By the time of its demise, it was down to 120,000.[5]

I only ever bought it in the eighties because those formed most of my teenage years.

So to me it is an eighties mag. I turned 20 in 1986 and had stopped paying it much attention by the time I was around 16 or 17. I didn't know it wobbled on until as late as 2006.
