Reduced hours mean reduced pay

Am interested to see what others think about this. Have been furloughed on 80% with no top up. Am going back to work shortly . Am paid hourly and will have greatly reduced hours (don't know what yet but probably 50% of usual pay). So should I be grateful to still have a job or think bugger it and look for something else? This issue will affect a lot of women in particular on low paid hourly rates. I get £9 ph. Btw I fully appreciate I am very lucky in that the family can manage if I don't work.

I'd stick with your job if you don't need the money. Jobs are not going to be easy to find.

BumpBundle · 28/05/2020 12:29

If you're on the furlough scheme then I believe you should still get 80% pay. 50% from your employer because you're working 50% and the 30% from the government.

I wouldn’t quit your job before finding another at the very least, but I’d be very worried about changing jobs in this climate.

Thighmageddon · 28/05/2020 12:33

Are you being given a new contract because your hours are reducing?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/05/2020 12:33

It depends on your immediate circumstances and those of your employer.

If you like the job, your employer is being upfront with you and you can manage financially then it would come under that idea if forebearance, I think.

There are going to be a sorts of compromises in all sorts of jobs while the economy tries to restart.

Good luck working it out!

AriettyHomily · 28/05/2020 12:35

@BumpBundle you are either furloughed or working.

LellyMcKelly · 28/05/2020 12:39

Do you like your job? If you’re not that bothered there’s no harm in having a look around.

manitobajane · 28/05/2020 12:40

Is your work of any benefit financially or doesn't it make any difference? Perhaps you could leave your job to do voluntary work instead?

I earn less than you per hour but I am the sole earner in the household so rely completely on my job.

AJPTaylor · 28/05/2020 12:45

Look for another job by all means but you would be daft to leave a job at the moment.

DonnaDarko · 28/05/2020 12:55

@AriettyHomily not from August, which I think @BumpBundle is referring to, but the government hasn't made any formal announcements yet on how it will work except that employers will be asked to contribute something.

Personally, OP, I'd wait for the market to pick up before looking for another job.
