I've not much money left at the end of the month and need to keep it. So tempted to get some new bits and bobs. Help me leave the bits and bobs in the shops please.

Just don't.

What do you need to keep the money back for?

I've used a few tricks, my favourite was to take the cash out of my account and leave my card at home when I went out, only taking an emergency fiver plus whatever I needed on that trip, say for groceries.

It's been quite easy with shops etc being closed recently, but now places are opening, the odd coffee and cake are sneaking back in...

Can you try “paying yourself first”?

When you get paid, put aside whatever you can afford to straight away into a separate savings pot. Even if it’s just £30, something is better than nothing.

If you’re tempted to buy bits and bobs, this should help you to stop. Also, I like to use the 24 hour rule. If I see something I like, I wait 24 hours. Sometimes the desire to ‘buy’ passes if you don’t buy it straight away!

Also, is there any way you can reduce your outgoings at all? Maybe looks for a cheaper phone contract/broadband package/energy supplier?

Payday for me today. I've got certain amounts coming out into 2 savings accounts on the 1st. But I've also looked now at how much I had left before I got paid and I've transfered that extra out into the savings too.

I save a LOT because it then, in my current account, looks like I have to be very careful with my money and I resist some purchases I'd have made. If I need to I can transfer it back.
