Are takeaways safe?

Ok so appreciate I may have been over cautious during lockdown, I wipe everything down from the supermarket before I take it into the house, I open post and throw away the envelope straight away and wash hands. I’m pretty paranoid about any surface that ‘it’ could last on for a number of hours / days. Just doing what I can to keep my family safe ...
Since lockdown a lot of places have resorted to doing takeaway food - which is great they are doing what they can to keep running during this time. Whilst a lot of friends have been getting takeaways - im just not sure it’s safe? Someone breathing over your food whilst prepping it, the cardboard box it’s given to you in ... Etc ...
Am I being unreasonable in thinking that takeaways are just not safe?

You have higher risk of food poisoning unless your domestic food hygiene is poor.

There is a correlation between takeaway consumption and poor health (probably not causal, but it could be that you overeat more when takeaways are available, rather than just a common link such as stress/lack of time.)

So no takeaways are not safe. They are very safe from catching a corona virus though.

I am soooooooo missing my Greggs

dementedpixie · 28/05/2020 17:11

@Hobnobswantshernameback if its the savoury pastries you are missing then Iceland sells some of them e.g. sausage rolls, chicken or steak bakes, sausage and bean bake, etc

I’ve had takeaway throughout lockdown, and even eaten them straight from the box etc. While I’m no scientist I would imagine you’re more likely to suffer from food poisoning than covid.

I hope so since I'm currently waiting for mine arrive.

Unless you are seriously vulnerable you are being far too over cautious. Life has to go on and places need to survive. Go and support them by buying takeaway.

We've had one a week since the beginning of lockdown - our treat to ourselves - all I can tell you in we are fine. Whilst I'm sure there is some risk, i gave weighed it up and made the decision. All companies appear to be taking the best possible steps to minimise risk, as do we, washing hands before we start eating etc.

@Dee1975 I do exactly the same as you and was concerned about ordering take aways. However, with two small kids under five we decided to go for it. We have ordered pizza and an Indian on two separate occasions. We put the oven and placed everything in the oven for around 10-15 mins to make sure that anything is killed before we ate it.

I know a lot of people don’t do this, but I’m a little paranoid anyway and in the BAME community, which is always at the back of my mind.

Thanks all for the good tips. With the r rate heading down (and living in an area with fairly low infection) I think we will now move to the next stage and have a treat taking precautions. We don’t eat takeaway that often anyway, but lots of lovely local restaurants are now doing take out which I fancy :-)

@Dee1975

Life is for living. We should all be sensible - but not paranoid.
