AIBU to think that most people would close conservatory windows at night?

Please help settle an argument.

We have a conservatory which gets stupidly hot in the sun. DH wants to leave the windows in it open overnight to keep it cool.

I want to keep the windows closed at night because:

  1. I think that it is too risky as conservatory can be seen from the main road
  2. The conservatory joins on to the house with no lock etc so if anyone broke in they would have access to the rest of the house.
  3. We have previously been burgled (although they didn’t get in through the conservatory and didn’t take much)
  4. I think our insurance would be invalid if we did get broken into by leaving a window open.

The windows are about 10inches deep and open out. I have tried to add a picture of similar.

DH doesn’t seem to care if we get broken into again and says that I am paranoid and turning into my parents (who to be fair are pretty paranoid about getting broken into). I think I’m just being sensible. We’re not exactly living in a crime hotspot - it’s a nice area but I have heard of a few people having break ins & cars nicked from driveways.

YABU: lighten up and just leave the windows open
YANBU: close the windows - you are right to think about security

Yanbu. I always close mine for safety reasons and I have lockable doors that separate it from the kitchen and living room !

I'm with you!

PolkaDotsPolka · 27/05/2020 23:00

All your points are valid. He is being unreasonable.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/05/2020 23:04

YANBU, I would never leave any windows open overnight.

BogRollBOGOF · 27/05/2020 23:04

I occasionally leave mine open but the access to the rest of the house is via locked, external quality doors (with no valuables in the conservatory). It's also not visible from the road.

In your position, I'd shut them.

MURDER HORNETS.

DS(22), who is tall & skinny, once managed to squeeze in through our conservatory window (which is just like yours) when he'd forgotten his key one night. I couldn't believe he actually got in that way so I asked him to demonstrate, and sure enough he did. I've shut ours every night now even though it's not visible from the road.

malmi · 27/05/2020 23:08

Tell him to get a proper lock fitted to the door from the conservatory into the house and then you might feel more comfortable with it

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/05/2020 23:11

I’d be too worried about a break in.
Tell DH that the insurance wouldn’t cover it if the idea of random strangers in the house doesn’t both him.

TheSecretaryBird · 27/05/2020 23:13

We regularly leave our doors and windows unlocked at night but we do have a very alert dog. We also live in the middle of nowhere.

Having said that, we also go out leaving doors and windows unlocked / open during the day too.

With the conservatory, I would leave the windows open but that’s based on my situation.

lymphopenia · 27/05/2020 23:13

I can fit through our conservatory top windows, they're just like yours. 5"4, late twenties, fairly slim build. Don't ask me how I know but I promise you, it's a recipe for disaster leaving them open especially near a main road.

We had a burglary while renting a house in Spain many years ago and the burglar used a fishing rod to hook our keys through the bars on our window, really common trick.

You're totally right and he's dim Grin

ItsNotAGameOfSubbuteoMatthew · 27/05/2020 23:15

Surely the question to ask him is 'should we leave a downstairs window open overnight?' The answer should ALWAYS be no! How ridiculous!

AcrobaticCardigan · 27/05/2020 23:16

Absolutely not. All windows should be closed at night.

LouiseTrees · 27/05/2020 23:17

Just put a dyson fan on in there (other rotating high powered fans are available) first thing in the morning for an hour or so. Close the windows.

DuckALaurent · 27/05/2020 23:17

If you left them open and got burgled your home insurance most likely wouldn’t pay out. Your DH is being a big thick tbh.

Rubyred24 · 27/05/2020 23:20

Do people close their upstairs windows at night?

LakieLady · 27/05/2020 23:20

On warm nights, we not only sleep with windows open, but leave the back door open, too - not just unlocked, but open.

However, we do have a dog who, although small, is proper feisty and would repel all boarders, and a side gate that is impossible to open quietly.

Boulshired · 27/05/2020 23:47

Is it going to make that much of a difference to the temp even if he left them open. It could of rained all night and morning in my old conservatory but as soon as the sun came out it was boiling.

Sh05 · 27/05/2020 23:53

I don't leave downstairs windows open but on some double glazed windows if you pull them nearly almost shut then pull the handle into lick position, it secured the window whilst leaving a tiny gap open for fresh air. I hope this makes sense as this is what we do in warm weather. From outside the window looks shut but it's a tiny tiny bit open.

nanny2012nanny · 27/05/2020 23:56

What if you live in a bungalow and you leave the windows open at night as it’s so not

8misskitty8 · 28/05/2020 00:08

It would invalidate your insurance if you were robbed with the windows open.

Being in a nice area means nothing to thieves.
We live in a nice area, quiet cu de sac but about 6 weeks ago so middle of lockdown my neighbour was broken into.
It was mid morning, broad daylight. Guy walked down her path, rung the doorbell and when no answered opened her side gate and forced the locked patio doors open. He left when her alarm went off. No-one saw anything. Fortunately she had a ring doorbell and it recorded him coming up the path and she put it on Facebook and he was recognised and charged.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 28/05/2020 00:13

Your husband is being silly. All your points are valid. You need to get thermal blinds fitted and pull them down during the day to keep the heat out.

Also FYI my aunts house was broken into via their conservatory window.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 28/05/2020 00:35

About ten years ago I lived in a ground floor flat, it was a nice area and surrounded by communal gardens, it was a no through road. I nodded off on the sofa watching a film, I woke up to a man over fifty leaning into my living room from the waist up peering through my curtains, I screamed, he ran, but I'd not leave downstairs windows open anymore.
In our current house we have tilt and turn windows so I do tilt the upstairs ones open of a night, except for the bathroom as there is a single storey extension below it.
