To ask if this is a weird response from narcissist mother?

Whenever I said "last night I had a dream about .....(whatever subject).." to my narc mum she would say

"What about? That I was dead?"
Of course my dreams would be about random things - old school friends, piano lessons as a child - you know - all this kind of thing - I've never dreamt that she was dead!!
But, every time I started with what I think is this normal conversation opener, she would respond like this!!! AIBU to think that this is a very weird response from my mum? Does anyone think this kind of response is typical narcissist? Thanks, I'd love your opinions on this as I'm an only child so can't ask siblings

Yeah it's a weird response, I'd just avoid that conversation with her if it's a constant thing

Because she immediately made your dream about her.

chocolatemademefat · 28/05/2020 01:00

Telling people your dreams is narcissistic. Or just really really boring.

Barryisland · 28/05/2020 01:10

No one wants to hear anyone elses dreams. Ever.

SandyY2K · 28/05/2020 01:19

I think the term narcissistic is thrown about a lot on here. On the basis of your limited information, I wouldn't come to your diagnosis.

She just sounds like a pretty negative person, but why do you continue to talk about your dreams, knowing what her response will be?

hadtojoin · 28/05/2020 01:55

She is probably a narcisist. She has to be in your dream because she is the most important person in your life. The 'That I was dead' part is because she wants you to realise and tell her how important she is to you. So you will appreciate and love her more because she is still alive. She wants your dream to remind you of how much you would miss her if she was dead.
It's like the photos on social media with the comment ' I'm ugly' so that everyone will tell them they are beautiful.

@Clairessouffle Maybe you've realised and dont mind but would just like to point out in case you name changed not to be outed... your replies are by another name.

Havent checked your previous posts so im not sure whether it matters to you or not.

LittleMissRedHat · 28/05/2020 04:49

Why would you keep telling your mum about your dreams if she always replies the same and it annoys you? Maybe she is giving you the same answer in the hopes of stopping you because you are annoying her! Maybe she thinks you are being narcissistic telling her about your dreams all the time. See how this could work both ways? Maybe if you stop, she will...

justilou1 · 28/05/2020 04:58

TBH... attention-seeking shit IS normal for a narcissist

HeyDuggeewhatchadoin · 28/05/2020 05:05

The beat answer to that is "No Mum, not everything is about you!" With a big laugh like she told a joke.

If she's going to be so obvious, you may as well call her out on it.

Well yes it’s strange why would you assume someone else’s dream was about you? . DD keeps having vivid dreams and I usually reply ‘ what happened? ‘

Wolfff · 28/05/2020 09:39

Yep, I had exactly the same convo with my narc mother many years ago. Everything had/has to be about her. Not normal, but normal for narcs.
