AIBU to want Fullerton House to stop their staff smoking ...

AIBU to want Fullerton House School to stop their staff smoking at the back of my house, their fumes wafting over the garden covering my washing and the grandkids swing set? I can’t enjoy a cuppa in peace outdoors anymore and feel like turning my hose pipe on them!
I know that would be unreasonable and classed as assault, even though water spray hurts no one, smoking fumes however hurt everyone and yet is not classed as an assault.....

@Keepingitschtum you’re obviously a smoker then .. what happened to being considerate?

LastTrainEast · 28/05/2020 10:58

Blame those who pushed for the smoking ban. They were forced outside by people who didn't like the idea of them being able to smoke at all. They were so pleased to when they got their way too.

"smoking fumes however hurt everyone" most of what you think you know about that is conspiracy theory nonsense. It's not classed as assault to smoke outside because it will disperse harmlessly.

LastTrainEast · 28/05/2020 11:00

Fluffybutter You say "What about setting up a sprinkler" and then you have the nerve to say "what happened to being considerate?"

Ughmaybenot · 28/05/2020 11:01

Have you spoken to the staff members direct? When they’re out having a smoke, have you popped your head over the fence and done a smiley, (fake) apologetic request for them to move away slightly? People aren’t generally complete arseholes (altho there are definitely exceptions) and if you said about your COPD, I’d be surprised if they didn’t move!

HoomanMoomin · 28/05/2020 11:03

See, I’m a smoker and I wouldn’t have any problem with being asked to smoke away from your house. Maybe ask them directly?

Keepingitschtum · 28/05/2020 11:05

@Fluffybutter no I'm not actually I just call out idiocy when I see it. Why should everyone have to be considerate when OP isn't considerate back? Contrary to popular Mumsnet belief, your health conditions and your preferences are no one else's problem but your own.

Keepingitschtum · 28/05/2020 11:06

@LastTrainEast 🙌

GranGran26 · 28/05/2020 11:12

By the time people are lighting their bbqs I’m inside on my oxygen and done for the day. Do you think that walking 15/20 steps away from our property is asking too much of the smokers then?

Fluffybutter · 28/05/2020 11:13

@LastTrainEast The “nerve” ? Grin leave off..
If there was a sprinkler going , they’d see that and move away from the fence .
I don’t see that as being inconsiderate , I wasn’t saying to turn it on with them standing there ..

You sound absolutely delightful .

Keepingitschtum · 28/05/2020 11:14

Saying you were going to put the hose on them is very unreasonable yes!

bobbikato · 28/05/2020 11:16

Well i think YANBU,but then i hate smoke .
Also i consider that anyone who works as a carer should not be a smoker - i know there would be no staff - but if it was heroin parties outside every day ,they would be sacked.
I know you all will say its not the same ,ones legal etc but both are slowly killing themselves .
( BTW i am not the lady hotelier in Scotland who does not employ smokers - thou i agree with her . )

Keepingitschtum · 28/05/2020 11:16

@Fluffybutter based on some of your past comments I can say the feeling is mutual 😂

Ughmaybenot · 28/05/2020 11:16

Asking them to move away a bit isn’t at all unreasonable, especially given your health. I wouldn’t have minded being asked, back when I smoked, and would have felt terrible to have inadvertently made anyone suffer.

GranGran26 · 28/05/2020 11:22

@Keepingitschum
I said I felt like turning on the hose... not that I would, big difference and said out of sheer frustration!

Sprinkler!
Phone the school every single day.
Then take it to the local papers/ Facebook group.

Keepingitschtum · 28/05/2020 11:23

@GranGran26 you firstly complained to their employer rather than just speaking to them as people, and then threatened to put the hose on them. I can see why you'd expect them to be considerate of your feelings.

GranGran26 · 28/05/2020 11:39

@troll

I made no threats and would hardly speak to someone who was smoking when I have severe COPD and I’m shielding... I’m not about to shout at them!

They have done this before and upset another neighbour so the school put up a smoking shelter, it would have been a smart move to put the shelter where they were recommending their staff to go.

welldonesquirrels · 28/05/2020 11:45

Could you get a no smoking sign and get a massive laminated printed sign for the other side of the fence that says something like:

"ATTENTION : PLEASE DO NOT SMOKE HERE.

I AM SHIELDING, HAVE SEVERE BREATHING PROBLEMS AND AM ON OXYGEN. EVERY TIME YOU SMOKE HERE YOU ARE MAKING MY HEALTH PROBLEMS WORSE AND LEAVING ME TRAPPED IN MY HOME, UNABLE TO USE MY GARDEN."

Or something like that. And just pin it up on the other side of the fence in a very visible place. Hopefully it might shame them into moving elsewhere.

I think you can probably order laminated prints online fairly cheaply, if you don't have a printer or laminater.

Keepingitschtum · 28/05/2020 11:46

😂

IncrediblySadToo · 28/05/2020 11:49

I was advised to phone back if it keeps happening,

Do that. As many times as it takes!!

I'm sorry you're having to deal with their inconsiderate behaviour. Especially at this time.

If it doesn't stop immediately I'd set up a sprinkler system (on max!!)

Take care 🌷

GranGran26 · 28/05/2020 14:18

@welldonesquirrels The schools handyman has just put up a sign, hoping that improves things... fingers crossed.
We welcome and enjoy a lot of wildlife in our garden, would hate to not be able to enjoy them as I always have.

Its my first posting so I don’t really know how this works but it looks like this poll is over, I want to thank all those who gave reasonable responses and grateful thanks especially to all the many lovely and supportive posters, you really helped. I’m very relieved that the school has now acted responsibly on this matter.
