Do you think £400 a month for groceries is too much

We are a family of four, two adults and a 14 and 11 year old . Since the lock down our grocery and household bills have increased to approx £400 a month. I have tried to explain to my hubby that the kids are not eating in school so it’s 3 meals , snacks no restaurants or takeaways and he thinks I’m being extravagant. I think this is perfectly reasonable as this includes all food plus cleaning products etc . Is this reasonable or am I being hopelessly extravagant?

We're normally around £110-120 pw shopping in Aldi for 2 adults & 2 teens. The dog is separate and needs his own income Grin These days DH is doing the shopping, still in Aldi, and we're running at £150ish pw but 3 people at home all day.

If your DH thinks he can feed the family for less then let him do the shopping.

We were spending £100-£150 a week on 2 adults and 1 dc pre lockdown, not including pet supplies or booze. Unless you can't afford it, YANBU.

It's pretty modest tbh, we spend approx £150 a week...I think the prices have gone up too tbh.

Family of four, kids aren't even teens, and we spend about 250 a week. I certainly don't think 100 per week is a lot!!

allyouneedis · 27/05/2020 19:13

Pretty much the same as what we are spending just now. Kids are home and eating like horses 😊

Family of 4 here and I think prices have gone up. I'd normally spend around £80, but now it's around £120 - £150 if I include booze. My kids aren't massive eaters, so I can't really blame it on the lockdown as they don't take a lot of feeding.

I'm spending around £400 a month for 2 adults.
But that includes everything, dog stuff, gas and electric, food and groceries, and PAYG phones, internet and includes a takeaway or a nice meal as in I'll spend a bit more once a week on something we wouldn't usually have.
Basically anything I use my card to pay for.
Other bills come out of a separate account as DDs/standing orders.
So I don't think yours is out of the ordinary.

Since lockdown began I've been doing a total weekly shop online rather than a reasonable online shop with multiple top ups. It's costing between £130 and £150 for two adults, four year old DS and 8 month old a week. The baby is weaning so there's a lot more fresh veg going in and DS is a gannet. He'd usually have three meals a day at nursery so there's been a lot more to buy.

Prices have definitely gone up. A pork joint we've ordered each week for the last three weeks has gone from £6.50 to £7.50. Aptamil used to be £10.75 in my local Tesco, it's now £11.50.

We're spending about £600 per month for everything (1 big shop per week and 1 bread and milk midweek). Family of 5: 4 adults and 1 tween. I'm not deliberately splashing out, but I'm not trying to save either. Occasionally we get some nice meat from the butcher, which is very expensive, so that pushes the average up for those weeks.

Bloops · 27/05/2020 19:53

Its not too much. Me and my partner alone spend £130+ a week on food. This is because we only do one visit to the shops a week and we are probably making up for not being able to spend that money eating out or going for coffees etc.

catsjammies · 27/05/2020 19:56

That is nothing. We are spending £250 a week right now 😭

Ostanovka · 27/05/2020 19:56

Me and two DC. I spend £100 per month for supermarket delivery, plus £20 per week for fruit, veg, milk and bread delivery. I don't have more to spend. I could cut out chocolate etc but at the moment I need it! We eat well I think, but it's quite simple food - porridge, veg, rice, potatoes, beans, lentils, eggs.

twinnywinny14 · 27/05/2020 19:58

Ours is £340 a month for 2 adults, part time SS plus 2 dogs and a cat x
