Luckily I have a thick skin! 😂

Does anyone else get this reaction, or other strange ones?

I came very close to being named Daniel. My parents were convinced I was a future football obsessed boy and didn't have any girls picked out. My saviour was a nun (friend of my Grandmother) who told them it was ridiculous and suggested the female version of the Saint whose day I was born on. Although to fair, I hated that for a long time but it was definitely better than being dragged around Europe starting school after school introducing myself as Daniel.

An E Sharp taught me music for a bit. I worked with an Athelstan and was very disappointed to learn his parents weren't professors mad or otherwise. I'm a bit worried about dd's name. She's named after dh's great aunt who was born in Spain. NE Scotland seems to find it slightly tricky to say.

*Loved those books, with Nicola, Lawrie, Ann and Karen? smile

It's a lovely name*

I loved those books, too! Wasn't there a Tim (named Thalia, and everybody misheard it was Failure? Very apt!)

I know a fair few people with 'classical' names (from Greek and Roman myths). Every time someone raises an eyebrow at their name, it instantly marks them down as someone who hasn't even had a passing idea of culture and history.

Except Boudicca, because that's a tough name to live up to.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I know a dentist called Payne- an Army Dentist. Major Payne the Dental Officer.
My dentist as a kid was called Peter Payne.

Looked like Dracula.

Yesitsmyname · 27/05/2020 14:06

I’m the Rev’d Toogood! It gets commented on all the time including and people seem to find it hilarious. A few people have even asked if it’s my real name.

Zaphodsotherhead · 27/05/2020 14:07

My DD is called Vienna.

I have what is, around here, called a 'posh' accent (it really really isn't, just my mum worked hard to beat all aspects of regionality out of me).

So my daughter's name was often misheard as 'Fiona'. Imagine someone with a very very upper class, cut glass accent saying 'Vienna'). There is still one person who always asks after 'Fiona' and it's too late to correct him now!

Only if I ask to see the manager....

CanICelebrate · 27/05/2020 14:14

My surname often makes people raise an eyebrow. It used to bother me but doesn’t do much as I’ve got older

justhereforthetips · 27/05/2020 14:20

Yes, for m

justhereforthetips · 27/05/2020 14:21

Yes, for my surname (married name). I'm white and my surname is from the Middle East. Lots of people make fun of it to my face. I sometimes wonder if they realise how racist / xenophobic they're being. Cunts.

MiaowMix · 27/05/2020 14:25

I think Lysander is a lovely name. It's just that you're a woman and it's traditionally a boy's name. Why did your parents call you it, do you know?

blancheduboiss · 27/05/2020 14:34

I mean, I don’t get a “are you taking the piss” reaction, but more of a “wow, i’ve never heard that name before”. Funnily enough, it’s definitely less unique in another country, but i’ve yet to come across anyone with the same name in the UK.

recklessruby · 27/05/2020 14:54

Not an unusual name but people SING at me a lot (first name).
My surname is common in NE Scotland where I m originally from but here in SE England I m constantly having to spell it for people on the phone.

mizu · 27/05/2020 15:21

Butdouavocado - Mohamed Ali Grin

Wagamamas · 27/05/2020 15:23

Lysander is not that unusual to my ears.

PiggyPokkyFool · 27/05/2020 15:33

I had two clients - brothers - whose parents obviously had a sick sense of humour as they were called Wayne and Joe King.

Itsnotalwaysme · 27/05/2020 15:38

There is a girl in my town called Diana Ross! I'm sure she must get it tough

thaegumathteth · 27/05/2020 15:50

I know a female Lysander and her sister also has an unusual name. Her brother has a totally normal name though.

SnugglySnerd · 27/05/2020 15:52

My mum's dentist is Doctor Payne!
There is a weather forecaster named Sara Blizzard which amuses me every time I see her. I also see builders' vans in my area for Mr Jelley and Mr Tickel, I wish they would form a partnership!
Lysander is a lovely name btw.
