To think mobile phone companies TOTALLY take the piss???

Last month I made a HUGE effort NOT to buy any additional add on data to my monthly phone package. Normally I buy A LOT each month as I don't have any home broadband. However, in these straitened lockdown times I've been more restrained in my data usage and last month was the first month for eons I didn't buy any add on data. However, compared to what I thought the standard tarriff was - 02 seemed to have sneaked on an extra cheeky few pounds to the bill compared to previous months - no doubt they've clocked this complete turn around in danger use!! Thieving fuckers!!! Angry

Switch to Giffgaff! For £25 you get "always on" data.

heartsonacake · 26/05/2020 09:23

It sounds like you’re trying to blame o2 for you not being savvy about your phone contract.

Continually buying bolt ons will be extortionate.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 09:33

Thanks for your feedback guys I admit I haven't been savvy about data and charges etc in the past. This will change though with the dawn of the new frugal me!!

StirlingWork

If your phone is over 2 years old and you don't want / need a new model then look at a sim only contract.

My £30+ contract dropped to under £11.00 when I went sim only. I had been with EE for a few years so they gave me a 'loyalty' discouint.

For that I get unlimmited calls, texts and 4GB data, it has gone up with inflation so ois now £11.28.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 09:36

sassh - that sounds like a really good deal

You need to haggle. I pay £20 for 50 GB a month, and it includes Spotify. This a SIM only contract with Vodafone.

TreeTopTim · 26/05/2020 09:43

You would probably be cheaper getting broadband and getting pay as you go.

Pinkblueberry · 26/05/2020 09:44

Err well yes data is expensive... that’s why most people have broadband.

Florencenotflo · 26/05/2020 09:50

I've just upgraded but before that I was paying £20 per month for unlimited calls, texts and data. It was a promotion at the time but prior to that I was paying £23 per month for 50gb and never used it all.

ScarletFever · 26/05/2020 10:05

always go sim only at the end of your contracts - otherwise you are paying way over the odds

AwwDontGo · 26/05/2020 10:09

You've just missed an amazing deal on Three which was only £16 for unlimited data, text and calls. I couldn't get it as it was for new customers only.

I currently pay £20 all in. I like Three because you can use your allowance in a lot of other country's.

If you were overpaying for your phone contract I wonder if you are overpaying other bills such as gas and electric etc. I don't scrabble around for ever last penny to save but i save a hell of a lot just by being a little savvy.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 10:11

I've just looked over all previous monthly bills before May and it's DISGUSTING how much I've spent on additional data. I'm REALLY now tightening my belt

myself2020 · 26/05/2020 10:16

i‘m with eee as well £10 per month, 6 G data, 200 min,1000 texts

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 26/05/2020 10:20

How much data did you have on that tariff?

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 10:24

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow - my core allowance is 3GB

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 26/05/2020 10:26

Only 3GB? For £32?

Phone companies really do rip people off once they are out of contract don't they?

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 10:35

SoupDragon - yes it seems so!!

You would probably save money getting your broadband back, I spent 25 a month on broadband and a £6 goodie bag from giffgaff for my phone.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 10:40

Diamondpickaxe - the deal you have sounds good - I certainly miss broadband

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 26/05/2020 10:41

I switched from O2 to Giffgaff about 4 years ago and haven't looked back. I like that I can change the "goody bag" each month if I'm going to need extra/less data. All the SmallDragons are with them too.

Truthpact · 26/05/2020 10:41

Why don't you have broadband?

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 10:44

Truthpact - ironically I got rid of it in 2018 to save money!!

OP posts:
SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 26/05/2020 10:45

These are the giffgaff tariffs

Suggested them because it's likely your phone is locked to O2, and that'll be the easiest switch.

If you want to do this, just call O2 and cancel your contract, get your PAC code, then you'll be able to port your number over to whatever

modgepodge · 26/05/2020 10:49

I’m surprised o2 didn’t ring you to tell you you were out of contract and offer you an upgrade/cheaper deal. I was with EE and my contract happened to end when I had a newborn and didn’t have the headspace to deal with it, and they phoned me 3 times to tell me I could get a new phone or a cheaper tariff! I thought phone companies were required to do this now.

I now pay £10 per month for about 10gb data PLUS unlimited social media (ie it doesn’t come out of my allowance), and more minutes and texts than I could ever need (possibly unlimited, I haven’t checked). Check out Voxi.

You definitely sound like you’d be better off on broadband with a cheap sim only deal with a small amount of data, getting rid of it seems like a false economy here.

MarylandMayhem · 26/05/2020 10:55

Go with giffgaff, it's cheap and you're not locked into a contract,l. It will actually recommend a lower priced package if it things it's a better deal for you.
