To take pebbles from the beach?

DarylDixonsHair · 25/05/2020 15:02

Is it allowed? I'd like to put some borders around my flowers beds so need about 20 - 30 medium sized ones. I wouldn't take them all in one go, probably a handful at a time while dog walking.

Just wanted to check I'm not breaking the law/endangering the planet/taking the piss.

Why would you want to when you can buy a bag for £5 even in the supermarkets

grumpyorange · 26/05/2020 14:22

@vanillandhoney have you ever taken one home? Have you even known anyone to? A parent, grandparent, child, partner?

Changedname1468 · 26/05/2020 14:23

I don't think taking a couple of pebbles from a beach is a problem. Even visitor boards acknowledge that it is ok.
Taking bags full is a totally different matter.

Are you allowed to pick up fossils? I found a humongous shark’s tooth fossil t’other day (stealth boast).

AmazingBouncingFerret · 26/05/2020 14:33

We always used to bring back stones and slate from holidays and I’m saying nothing about the large stone county marker that was unceremoniously dumped in the ditch when it was replaced with a shiny metal new one in the early 90’s. It has pride and place in my dad’s garden to remind him of his birthplace. Grin

notthemum · 26/05/2020 14:38

I'm afraid it is theft and you are not allowed.

Terralee · 26/05/2020 14:46

Where was the sharks tooth fossil?? I want one of those!!

Seriously I live near the Jurassic Coast & my childhood was spent finding lovely shells, pebbles & fossils on days out to add to my collection. I still have them & the wooden box my Grandad made for them.

I went to Charmouth a couple of years ago & brought back 4 or 5 of those lovely quartz veined small rocks which I put on my garden.

But I wouldn't get more than that in one go.

And if you look for fossils I believe there's a code now that you are encouraged to follow.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/05/2020 14:51

Herne Bay. Most people hereabouts have a collection of the things Grin... but this one is amazing. It’s about 3cm by 3cm. My dd (16) was wildly jealous. And I was very smug.

vanillandhoney · 26/05/2020 16:09

@grumpyorange - no. Because I was always told it wasn't allowed and I just accepted that.

Children want to do lots of things, doesn't mean you have to say yes.

LegArmpits · 26/05/2020 16:20

reputable pebbles is the best thing I've read 🤣🤣🤣

KingOfDogShite · 26/05/2020 16:25

I’ve got a house full of a 40 years worth interesting stones, shells, fossils, beach glass and other interesting items I’ve picked up on beaches.

Beach combing is one of life pleasures. I’d love to live by the sea ❤️

grumpyorange · 26/05/2020 16:31

@vanillandhoney but no one in your family has ever taken a pebble home?

Terralee · 26/05/2020 16:59

Matilda I'm going to look for sharks teeth & fossilised shells on a beach nearby called Highcliffe which is meant to be good for those as the cliffs are muddy.

On Charmouth I've mainly got lots of ammonites, belemnites & fools gold.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/05/2020 17:37

Fossil hunting is addictive. My dc are teenagers, and think they’re beyond it, but the moment we walk past the best place for fossils (low tide only) they’re out there, and have to be dragged off, as the tide laps at their feet.

ClassicCola · 26/05/2020 20:22

@PafLeChien

And this shows how kids are being raised these days: no one gives a shit about anything, joe public knows better than anyone else, rules don't apply to them, and who cares what the rules are if you can get away with it.

This thread summarises the attitude towards the lockdown superbly.

It's broken Britain.
alexdgr8 · 26/05/2020 22:06

i think it is concerning that the attitude seems to be, of course it's OK, because i had no idea it's against the law, and anyway i want to do it, so it doesn't matter what the law is.
and then people complain about children, teenagers being defiant, selfish, entitled, spoilt.
cause and effect, maybe, a bit like coastal erosion...

Aridane · 11/11/2020 00:47

What is sea glass ?

Blueberries0112 · 11/11/2020 00:53

there is a sea glass beach and people are not allowed to collect them, so I assume it really depends where you are collecting them from, ask.

Snowcloud92 · 11/11/2020 00:53

@terrelontane

So where do the garden centres get them from...do they breed them?
I LOVE this. I was reading all these dramatic comments and thinking the same Grin
cyclingmad · 11/11/2020 00:56

Ah but the sea will take some, just grt a boat and dive for them Grin

cyclingmad · 11/11/2020 00:58

Might be onto something here will the pebbles at high tide be classed as beach or sea?? Hmm or at low tide is a pebble is a few cms into the sea than the beach can you technically take it cos thats classed as the sea and not the beach ConfusedGrin
