If you have a drive, park in it!

I live on a fairly narrow suburban road that at a very tight squeeze can fit 2 cars side-by-side. Every house on the street has a drive and a garage, though they are occasionally a dozen or so metres away from the house (terraces with drives beside the row of houses). It really bothers me (and maybe IABU) that nearly half of the drives are permanently empty and people are choosing to park on the street directly their house instead. It makes it difficult to drive down the road, especially when another car is coming in the opposite direction!

It's not just my street where this happens, I've noticed on the majority of streets in my area, even on busy roads!

AIBU that cars should be parked in drives where possible?

YANBU. Drives me batty.

A house I used to have was on a narrow road and if anyone parked opposite I couldn't actually get the car out of the drive. I got blocked in several times and stopped using my drive. Looking at your diagram it looks a little narrow there too.

MooseBreath · 25/05/2020 15:42

There's definitely nothing blocking the drives (the street is well-designed), but it certainly makes it harder for me to back out of mine when someone is parked directly by the dropped kerb to my drive!

Our drive is out the back of our house so not on the main road. I've been blocked in before by someone who though it would be a really good idea to park their truck practically touching the bonnet of my car Hmm

I don't park there anymore!

Oldbutstillgotit · 25/05/2020 15:51

Until our NDN moved in last year I always parked on our drive however I was sick of them parking across our drive and getting shirty when asked to move so I now park across our own drive !

Carrie7469 · 25/05/2020 15:52

YANBU
My neighbour has two cars. He parks one on his drive (even though his drive has space for two cars) and parks the other outside my house instead of outside his own.
I think it’s selfish, but he’s a great neighbour in every other way and I’ve never said anything about it.

Littlebelina · 25/05/2020 15:57

Our neighbour likes to park (one of their 4) cars partly over our drop kerb making it difficult to get off our step angled drive. That plus the drive being narrow so difficult to get kids into car seats means if we are using my car a lot we park both our cars over our drive for ease.

beargrass · 25/05/2020 16:02

YANBU. One set of our neighbours do this. I have to assume none of them can park because why else would you do this and how hard is it to learn to park?!

Chocolate1984 · 25/05/2020 16:06

We don’t park on our drive because people park so close to our dropped kerb we don’t actually have room to get our car out. There is usually a car parked right behind our drive and this means there isn’t room to turn the car

User57327259 · 25/05/2020 16:20

I prefer to have our cars on our driveway (out of the way of the not very good drivers in our street). The problem is as with others on here are people parking right up to the edge of the driveway and cars parked opposite. Many times the driveway has been blocked and I have not been willing to try to get out without causing damage to mine or other cars. It is pure selfishness. There are cars parked on one side of the road and up on the pavement on the other side. They wont even move the obstructing cars when emergency vehicles are prevented from getting through.

DollyDoneMore · 25/05/2020 16:25

It’s none of your business if people choose to park on their own drive or the public highway.

PilatesPeach · 25/05/2020 16:28

Problem with parking on your drive is that it can be quite difficult to get off it again safely if others either side, have parked on the road. It can mean no visibility of the road to check it is clear or that you cannot achieve the necessary angle to swing off your drive without being totally in the opposite side of the road and possibly in the path of an oncoming car. Almost easier if all use drives or none do.

YANBU OP. I live on a housing estate where every house has a double driveway for 2 cars. I would say half of the people living on the estate don't use their driveways. drives me mad, its quite dangerous too when they park on bends and you can't see what is coming up ahead.

suggsy · 25/05/2020 16:53

YANBU - I used to live on a street like this and it drove me crazy. One of the main reason when we were house hunting we chose the house we live in now as all the houses had massive drives so no excuses! There’s still one CF with a double driveway and garage that still parks in the single car sized road. Drive everyone else nuts - so inconsiderate!
