AIBU contraception?

UnicornAndSparkles · 25/05/2020 11:39

AIBU to ask what form of contraception - if any - you are on, and how you find it?

Just come off the mini pill and looking for something that doesn't make me depressed, doesn't kill my sex drive and doesn't increase migraines or blood pressure. Are condoms the only choice?!

I am on the implant which works well for me, but I had a friend on it who had a terrible time and it caused her very heavy bleeding.

Unfortunately contraception is a pain because there’s no one size fits all, different women have different symptoms/problems with all of them. The best thing might be to have a chat with your GP about the best option for you (when you can) and going from there.

Condoms. I was previously on the implant (9 years) however it's life cycle ended last summer and, as myself and DP we're supposed to be getting married this year, we wanted to start TCC towards the end of this year I decided to come off all hormonal contraception. I think my PMS is reduced since coming off it. Lost no weight though, as was hoping haha.

Merryoldgoat · 25/05/2020 12:31

Condoms. I can’t take any hormonal contraceptives and have enough issues with my periods that I’m not shoving anything up there.

AmberEars · 25/05/2020 12:32

Condoms work well for us.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 25/05/2020 21:28

Nothing at the minute as my coil fitting was cancelled....

So using withdrawal and tracking...

peperethecat · 25/05/2020 22:04

I'm not in anything but I used to have the copper coil and before that the implant and both worked great for me.

june2007 · 25/05/2020 22:12

Coil? That's not Hormone related.
Wouldn,t use condoms. (that's how I got my DD)

Nottherealslimshady · 25/05/2020 22:14

The copper coil was awful. The arm implant destroyed my mental health. The mini pill was actually really good for me, although I did go from the hell of the copper coil go the relief of that so it may have swayed my judgement. Currently on nothing.

Qwerty543 · 25/05/2020 22:22

The mini pill was awful for me, horrendous mood swings and fuckedup my cycle and gave me 10 day periods with a 2 week break, when they were predictable. I now have the implant which has caused a lot of random bleeding. I've been given microgynon alongside to stop the bleeding, which it did but as soon as I stopped it I started bleeding again. So far I'm staying on microgynon with it until I can get the damn thing out. I had a migraine with aura once so technically am not suppose to be on combined contraception but it was years ago and I'm happy to take a chance atbthe moment. Not causing issues. For me combined cantraceptives have always been the best.

DP was due to have the snip but it was cancelled due to lockdown. As soon as he can get it and we get the all clear, that's me done with bloody hormones!

suchclearwater · 25/05/2020 22:24

Copper coil Smile

Curiosity101 · 25/05/2020 22:28

I had the combined pill from age 14-28. I only came off it to TTC.

Once I had my baby I decided to try something a little bit more long term and got the implant. I've had it in 6 1/2 months and I really want it removed already. I can't be sure the issues I've got at the moment are being caused by the implant but I'm guessing that's the cause.

I've looked at a lot of options and am considering the ring in future as it's a bit less effort than the pill, but similar hormones so I'm hoping it suits me.

If not I think I'll try a diaphragm every day, then fertility tracking and condoms in the most fertile time.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 25/05/2020 22:30

I gave found people either love or hate the mirena. I'm not sure about the 'its only a small amount of hormone and stays local' - it causes side effects to your whole body. I got mine taken out due to migraines (not sure if it caused them or coincidence) and a few months after my hair started growing back, I got the same tuft regrowth that I did at the same time I did after pregnancies. So the hormones obviously had some side effects, and I also spotted every other week which was a PitA. I have heard of people having terrible low mood on it. I also know people who absolutely love it. I'm considering a copper coil but not sure I want to chance having heavier periods again

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 25/05/2020 22:31

Also I found out that about a third of people come off the mirena after a few months because of side effects. Cant remember where I read that though

Frokni · 25/05/2020 22:40

Injection is wonderful. But, i came off it as Covid meant my repeat appt didn't happen. My mood improved immensely, sex drive returned and when I tried (am still trying) to lose weight, it actually came off! For now it's condoms which are good for us

Have heard good things about the coil though 👌

MrsPear · 25/05/2020 23:27

I was sterilised. Then had an ectopic. Now I have zero tubes. I asked for my womb to go too - didn’t see much point of it - the surgeon said I was too young.

OwlinaTree · 25/05/2020 23:36

I've got a copper coil as wanted no hormones after having a nightmare coming off the pill and no periods for 18 months when wanting to conceive.

Have had two now and must admit that I have had heavier periods for a couple of years, then they settled a bit. Having said that after so many years on the combined pill it's hard to know what is normal for me before the coil.

It's good to know it's in and it lasts for 10 years with no effort needed.

Sparklfairy · 25/05/2020 23:43

I was on the injection for 10 years. Absolutely loved it, after a few weeks of erratic bleeding my periods stopped and had no side effects.

I stopped it for a year (single and was thinking about stopping putting hormones in my body) then started up again. I don't know if it's connected but I got an awful gallbladder infection and was put on morphine in hospital! A high increase in progesterone can cause this. Don't know if they changed the formulation but it's put me off having it again (top up cancelled due to covid). Men can wear condoms without all the hassle we have to deal with!

foreverhungry2409 · 25/05/2020 23:43

Had the nexplanon implant put in in November. Only had 3 periods since (light spotting really) and insertion was simple and barely painful. I would say it's given me mood swings for the first few months but it's definitely settled since. It doesn't last as long as the coil but I feel as though by the time it needs to come out, I'll be ready for DC3!

LittleBrownMouse1 · 26/05/2020 22:12

Combined pill (Yasmin) previously on another combined pill that didnt agree with me but love the one im on.
Came off it to TTC our first baby, after the birth was put on mini pill (hated due to weight and skin) due to breastfeeding as not allowed combined. As soon as finished breastfeeding changed back to Yasmin. Lost the pregnancy weight I couldnt shift and skin back to being clear (most of the time) no changes to mood etc.
Different contraceptives work well for others so unfortunately may have to be a bit of trial and error to find what works for you.
