To watch iPlayer without a licence

Hi all,

I recently moved to the UK, and had to watch a few news programmes for work on iPlayer as a once off. I don't have a TV, and can't afford the licence fee (under rent stress and really struggling to afford essentials).

I feel really guilty about this, and am really stressed I'm going to be fined.

I guess my AIBU is AIBU to hope no-one notices. Are they able to cross check your iPlayer email address with current valid licences? And if you get caught, do they give you the option to buy a licence or do you get fined straight away (how much is the fine? I know the max is 1000 pounds).

I player doesn't need a real email address to register with as it doesn't send a message for it to be verified. If you're going to break a law at least try not to get caught.

You should check out chillijoncarne on YouTube - he goes through all the popular myths about the tv licence. The truth is that there is no way for them to detect if you are watching bbc iplayer, or live tv and if an enforcement officer comes to your door they have no right to come in, you can just say no thanks and close the door. And even if you did manage to confess to an enforcement officer the fine is around the £100 mark. I honestly wouldn’t worry they have no way at all of knowing unless you actually confess to it.
