Did Boris Johnson just call us all bad parents?!

Having watched that briefing I am incandescent with rage, less at what Cummings did - I understand people might have needed to make difficult choices and compromises during lockdown - but at the excusing of it. Why not admit it was an error of judgement and apologise?

I have three children. When my husband and I both became ill with what we believed to be Coronavirus in mid-March, we took turns to watch the children whilst the other slept. I lay on the sofa, feeling the illest I have ever felt, while CBeebies played on loop. We relied on neighbours we barely knew to drop off essentials. We would have loved to lean on family but we didn’t because we believed to do so would endanger them and the wider community.

A succession of ministers - and now the Primeminister himself - have suggested that Mr. Cummings behaved as any loving parent would. But many loving parents did not behave as he did. We struggled and made sacrifices in what we believed was the National interest. Are they now suggesting we just don’t love our kids as much as Mr. Cummings loves his?

FilesandPies: Would you rather I didn't 'turnaround', stuck to my guns. Sorry, didn't realise I had to have a standpoint and not waver or clarify.
My bad.

Personally I think the biggest problem is the shit stirring journalists.
Yeah, if newspapers would just stop holding the government to account and cover up instances of key political figures breaking the laws, things would be great.

PerkingFaintly · 24/05/2020 23:14

Feeble effort, Walkingtheplank. Why on earth would this be anywhere close to a "bring down the government" issue when they could have just sacked – or even chastised – the one adviser and moved on?

It's hardly "left-wing MNers'" fault Johnson has nailed himself to Cummings mast.

Fozzleyplum · 24/05/2020 23:15

Boris is not going to be able to blag his way out of this. He seems unaware that this is a deal breaker, even for many dyed in the wool tories. He and Cummings have made fools of all of us who have adhered to staying at home and distancing, even in the most difficult, and sometimes tragic, circumstances. It makes no difference if his child has additional needs. I've read threads on here where parents of children with autism have been despairing because of the problems that lockdown has caused, and they weren't given a free pass to travel.

Either Boris is incapable of understanding how damaging this will be, or he can't run a government without Cummings, or Cummings has something on him. I wonder which it is.

DioneTheDiabolist · 24/05/2020 23:15

Walkingtheplank, when the loads of people across the political divide are calling for the same thing, that's not an echo chamber.

Underhisi · 24/05/2020 23:15

"There's a suggestion on Twitter that the child has severe autism and can only be cared for by peope he trusts."

I have a child with severe autism. His child is 4 not a difficult to manage older child and they have relatives nearby.

Ratasha · 24/05/2020 23:17

or he can't run a government without Cummings, or Cummings has something on him
It's one of these two.

NearlyGranny · 24/05/2020 23:19

I don't think 'lying doggo' means what Wakefield thinks it means...

Lying doggo is lying low, hiding, keeping a low profile, like a thief after a robbery waiting for the hue and cry to die down. It implies having something to hide, something to be ashamed of.

Perhaps it's more accurate than she intended.

Walkingtheplank · 24/05/2020 23:20

Thanks for the assessment PerkingFaintly. Im not sure what my effort is supposed to be aiming towards. Just giving an opinion. I happen to think Cummings should go by the way on the basis of what I've read but I don't actually know what happened because I've not seen any actual facts.

And bringing down governments is done by chipping away - this is one of those chips.
Unless we're talking revolution.

chomalungma · 24/05/2020 23:20

Daily Express article is great

They found a sympathetic dog walker in Durham

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 23:20

Oh blah Walkingtheplank is this your best defence, people are being howible to the Tories? And how can you turnaround your opinion on the left-wing conspiracy within a couple of posts??

You're right in a way - the press are looking for a gotcha and that's because the Gov has proved so catastrophically useless at dealing with CV - there just seems to be a bottomless pit of incompetence to dig around in. The media would not be doing their job if they just went along with the Gov line.

But even compared to the stream of scandals surrounding the CV response what Cummings did, and Johnson's response to it, is a totally new level of arrogance and stupidity.

NearlyGranny · 24/05/2020 23:22

And I thought it was just in the US where supporters of the elected leader see investigative journalism as treachery and try to force all the outlets into sycophancy. It's crossed the pond, clearly.

Seasidetrains · 24/05/2020 23:24

I was furious about this even before the press conference. Now I am incandescent. I have 3 DCs (including twins) and we have talked about what we would do if we got sick but I have never even considered the possibility of going to my parents’ house, partly because it’s against the rules and partly because it would put them and who knows how many others at risk. For various reasons my dad probably doesn’t have very long left and I have been in pieces at not being able to see him. For Cummings to break the law that he probably drafted, then basically give us all the finger when questioned about it, is beyond belief.

FliesandPies · 24/05/2020 23:25

*"The dog walker added.." Hilarious.

Does anyone actually read the Express and if so, what for??

Chimpd0g · 24/05/2020 23:29

Sorry haven’t read whole thread, but some posters are saying he was being responsible and thinking of children as they were too ill to look after them - if he was that bad he would have been too ill to drive! 🤦‍♀️

masterblaster · 24/05/2020 23:41

Personally, I think the biggest problem is the bots and false accounts on MN

Grandmi · 24/05/2020 23:53

Fozzley...I agree. I was driving home this evening from work thinking that Cummings must have something over BJ !! Why would anyone put their credibility on the line as PM for Cummings very poor decision...it doesn’t make sense 🤔

SusieOwl4 · 25/05/2020 00:04

You are all going to feel so stupid when the truth comes out . This Is a witch hunt .

PotholeParadise · 25/05/2020 00:08

FliesandPies

The USP of the Daily Express used to be the consistent focus on the death of Princess Diana.

FliesandPies · 25/05/2020 00:16

You are all going to feel so stupid when the truth comes out

So you are confirming that Cummings has lied?

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/05/2020 00:17

What "truth" SusieOwl4?Confused

PotholeParadise · 25/05/2020 00:19

You are all going to feel so stupid when the truth comes out

is what you should have told the men and women in our most senior political posts when they were hitching their careers to claims that Cummings had rigorously self-isolated once in Durham.

Tavannach · 25/05/2020 00:21

@TabbyMumz
he followed the guidance

He did NOT follow the guidance.

This, from the NHS website:

Self-isolation if you or someone you live with has coronavirus symptoms

To protect others, you must stay at home if you or someone you live with has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dominic was better placed than most to fully understand the guidance given that he helped draft it and sat on SAGE committees.

Carrying the virus to Durham was completely irresponsible.

Ratasha · 25/05/2020 00:21

What "truth"
I'm also morbidly curious to hear this nonsense.

Ratasha · 25/05/2020 00:24

Glad to see some Tory MPs calling for DC to go too.

If only @SusieOwl4 was there to set them straight, he?
