To ask you as a courier.

To please get a number or name on your house/ door. The amount of times I've had to drive up and down a road searching for a house with no name or number on their door. Generally I take the parcel home with me.

To ask you to say thank you. Yes I know I'm only delivering a parcel but a thankyou goes a very long way.

To ask you not to tell me off for knocking too loudly/ quietly. We are run off our feet at the moment and I need to work as quickly as possible to get all my parcels delivered.

Please don't leave a note on your door asking me to ring you and you'll come asap. This means me going back to my car, unlocking my phone then waiting for you to answer/ come. As above we are very, very busy!

Leave a note asking me to call back later. I have a set route which probably ends a few miles away from you, we get on average 60p a parcel and while it doesn't seem a big deal, after delivering 100+ parcels I don't want to go back on myself.

To not let Frank the friendly Jack Russell who has never bitten anyway loose at my ankles. I love dogs and will happily fuss them, but I've also been bitten a few times so I'm also wary.

Don't feel bad for ordering. I am just happy to be working right now when so many are losing their jobs. I also think, if I'm going to be delivering 30 parcels I may as well do 100, the risk is the same. I cant speak for all couriers of course!

Answer your door as quick as you can. I have a few customers who take ages to answer and right now every second counts.

I’m actually applauding you here.
You are right on every single point.

ESPECIALLY the number on the door, district nurses also don’t have time to be driving up and down looking for the right house....ime

MrsMozartMkII · 24/05/2020 19:00

Very thankful for the couriers! You're very much appreciated.

Have made note of all points.

happylittlevegemites · 24/05/2020 19:05

I’m grateful and always say thank you ... except for the Hermes driver who is notorious in our village. Quite simply, he is a very bad driver (I’ve just deleted a long list of things he is well known for). It’s a two way street (literally as well as metaphorically - he nearly crashed into me driving on the wrong side of the road this week).

FinallyHere · 24/05/2020 19:06

Indeed. If I'm upstairs when you ring, I've been hanging out of an upstairs window so you don't have to wait til I can get down the stairs.

I am very grateful. Lockdown would be very much worse without a few deliveries.

LudaMusser · 24/05/2020 19:10

I did home delivery for Sainsburys and Ocado for three years, luckily only twenty drops a day but the amount of houses without numbers was annoying!

I think it's because the home owner themself doesn't need to know the number so it doesn't occur to them to make sure they have it on display

Respect to you being a courier, I've always thought it must be a very hard job

rivertoskateaway · 24/05/2020 19:40

Appreciate our delivery drivers so much, especially our lovely Hermes lady who is at my house far too often. Thank you for the job that you do!

rosiejaune · 24/05/2020 20:42

Maybe people who take a long time to answer are disabled, or caring for someone, or are in the middle of something they have to safely put down before they can come to the door (which may be their own work, without which they couldn't order anything and give you a job).

ladygracie · 24/05/2020 20:45

Yes! I babysit and tutor it’s so hard to find houses sometimes.
I always say thank you & in my house we do laugh about how loudly couriers knock - it’s like they are trying to break the door. I literally ran all the way down the road the other day to take the package so they didn’t wake the kids up! I was just in time.
Thank you so much. It is much appreciated.

ladygracie · 24/05/2020 20:46

Obviously I would never complain about loud knocking - I can’t believe that people do!!

picklemewalnuts · 24/05/2020 20:59

I always say thank you, and really appreciate people doing deliveries! I also apologise for taking a while to get to the door. I try, but I have to sit with my feet up and the chair takes forever to get back down.

Iwantacookie · 24/05/2020 21:08

I'm sorry I dont have a door number.
Next door however leave their bin out constantly with their house number on though.

PawPawNoodle · 24/05/2020 21:23

Our Amazon delivery man will hammer on the door like they're about to raid us and then hold the bell for about 3 seconds which is as long as it takes me to get to the door. It's a small flat and it scares the shit out of me as I'm normally in the hall by then and shout that I'm en route. I've asked him not to do it. 🤷‍♀️

Wished the hermes driver a good day to be told that it wasn't and wouldn't be, too.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 21:44

Well bloody said OP!

I do follow all your rules, because you're a 100% right.

Sparklesocks · 24/05/2020 21:50

Never understand why people use these threads to air their own personal grievances about the topic/service.

Thanks for keeping the world going OP! Couriers are very important, now more than ever at the moment.

Khione · 24/05/2020 21:51

@rosiejaune

I am pretty sure the OP has plenty of patience for those they can see struggle to get to the door and those who say 'sorry, I was just ...'.

Or even if those who have taken a long time say 'thank you' and smile.

It's the ones that take a long time, open the door and grab the parcel without acknowledgement that they are grumbling about.

There are always occasional extenuating circumstances but I am sure the OP wouldn't have posted if it everyone was courteous.

grumpyorange · 24/05/2020 21:52

Our amazon drivers ring the doorbell if you don't open the door in half a min!
If I'm feeding the baby I need time to get up and get to the door.

No Numbers are annoying though!

Serendipper · 24/05/2020 21:52

I have occasionally been put a sign on the door asking to knock quietly. My front door opens straight into the living room which I’m mainly in. The amount of time’s people have banged the door like a police raid and woken up the baby I’ve spent ages getting to sleep is insane.

Khione · 24/05/2020 21:53

I just so appreciate anyone who delivers to me - so long as they aren't rude and grumpy they always get a smile and a thank you. Even though I am generally an antisocial person. People who are doing me a service deserve my thanks and consideration.

understandmenow · 24/05/2020 21:56

Presumably in line with the amount of n line shopping you do? 🙄

Hopefullysmart · 24/05/2020 22:02

And here was I thinking that couriers were for MY convenience....

And I do have a number, in large black iron numerals, and they still take my parcels to the wrong house and bring my neighbours parcels to mine.

And I don't need to be reminded to use basic manners.

So for that reason; 😏

flowersandpetals123 · 24/05/2020 22:22

My Hermes guy is usually back in his van by the time I open the door but he just leaves it by the door and I give him a little wave!
Maybe I should write thankyou on some paper and stick it to the door.. or is that abit wankerish?

Bloody hero that man
Most exciting thing at the moment are my parcels 😭

NumbsMet · 24/05/2020 22:40

I could feel the frustration reading your post OP. Thank you for bringing attention to things that a lot of people don't think of, myself included. I personally had no idea that people don't just say 'thank you' automatically when handed a parcel. It would take no time at all out of their day. It just seems like a bare minimum courtesy 🤷‍♀️

Serendipper · 26/05/2020 13:19

No usually for anyone in the street as they knew I was home on mat leave so all parcels came to me. I was like a poxy post office at one point. Luckily everyone else is home now and can take their own parcels Smile
