To be annoyed that the only little boys' wellies Tesco sell have "Bad To The Bone" written all over them?

It's bad enough the T-shirts with slogans like "little monster" and "0-naughty in 10 seconds". But "Bad To The Bone" with skulls and crossbones, for a 4 year old? What kind of message does that send out!

Emsmum, I got sick of pink and put my 7 month old DD in green or yellow and everyone assumed she was a boy...

Sunshine78 · 21/09/2007 12:03

I bet tesco stock several pairs of girls boots! I have one of each and there seems to be more choise out there for girls. I'm not so fussed about tame cute/funny slogans but I hate skulls/ war type clothes - to the point I can not tand combat which seemed to be ever where the other year. My boy is cute and lovable not at all violent so thess clothes dont even suit him.

TheApprentice · 21/09/2007 12:09

chochipcookie I know how you feel. I dressed my ds (aged 9 months) today in a navy blue all-in-one and a yellow cardigan knitted by an aunty. Yellow is obviously considered as a girly colour as for the first time today someone thought I had a daughter!

LazyLinePainterJane · 21/09/2007 12:13

Boys clothes are definitely worse. Am really sick of the lack of choice in boys when compared to girls. The worst was in Tesco, looking for wellies. In the shoes section you have one facing of boys shoes compared to 3 of girls!

Next has lots of beautiful girls clothes at the mo, all the boys is dull or slogantastic.

3andnomore · 21/09/2007 12:19

Bad to the bone is a pretty bad slogan
I am not completely against slogans...and well, my lil ones have some items with slogans on them...not many and nothing extreme...
Must admit, I do find that Boys clothing is a bit boring , and girls clothing seems to be mainly pink, and that in general Kids clothing is rather grown up...which is a shame...Kids should be Kids...!
In that respect I do prefer german childrens clothing...it's much more appropriate, as is french clothing (thinking of La Redoute and Verbaudet here).

fizzbuzz · 21/09/2007 12:51

I used to be a boyswear designer. The problem is with the big chains. The buyers are so scared of stuff not selling, that they won't take any risks with colour or style, yet most parents of boys seem pretty fed up with the choice.

Ditto pink for girls. The moto is, if it has sold in the past it will continue to sell forever!!

I also loathe slogans on childrenswear. Especially Daddy's Little Princess

Fizzbuzz, thats really interesting. I think there is a gap in the market for colourful, non-adult like clothes for little boys. You should set up your own company!

margoandjerry · 21/09/2007 14:41

definitely a gap in the market. My sister and I have been discussing it but neither of us have any skills whatsoever...

Could also sell nice, normal girls clothes. Am currently looking for a plain, soft wool, washable cardigan for a one year old. Not a cropped one - she's not going to a ball.

Found one on Boden.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • no slogans
  • nice colours
  • baby and toddler clothes without zips and hoods (don't think they are comfortable for them)
  • boys clothes designed by someone who likes clothes not someone dressing for an office job -clothes that go up to big sizes - boys get shifted into mini-adult clothes WAY too early
legalalien · 21/09/2007 14:48

I've resorted to having my mum post clothes from nz - postage expensive, but dollar weak so kind of evens out - generally get them in the end of season sales from www.jk.co.nz, if anyone fancies setting up a UK distributorship!

Botbot · 21/09/2007 14:55

You need to recruit a lot of retired women like my mum, who spends loads of time knitting lovely plain cardigans for my dd. She even uses knitting patterns she used for me and my db in the 70s (carefully vetted by me of course).

hifi · 21/09/2007 15:04

unfortunately there is a market for this kind of stuff, its usually the gift market which is huge, dont presume because you dont like it others dont, each to there own etc. etc. tesco is mass market.

margoandjerry · 21/09/2007 15:07

I don't really do "each to their own" when it comes to children's clothes because I really feel I should be President of the World on this subject! There's just so much wrongness out there

I can't be laissez faire about it when Littlewoods are selling a schoolbag with the playboy bunny on it (and yes, it's definitely a schoolbag because it's on the school uniform page of their catalogue)

hifi · 21/09/2007 15:16

i do each to there own as i hate half mast , washed up , boden pj bottom type trousers, dont get it.

hifi · 21/09/2007 15:19

also (on a rant here) when i visit my sister and her girls go to a party i gasp in amazement at the false nails, high heels and make up, they look like lap dancers and do the same dance moves. when asked about it apparently its all the rage, playboy bunny thing is huge. the girls are 7 and 9!

Caroline1852 · 21/09/2007 16:44

margoandjerry
I couldn't agree more about the hoods and zips. Hoods on baby clothes are ridiculous. I also get totally sick of baby pink on girls.

Anna8888 · 21/09/2007 17:03

margoandjerry - you need to go to Bonpoint

I think HonoriaGlossop said it best.

bunsen · 21/09/2007 23:05

I think you need to get a sense of homour, god its not like the nippers can read the slogans or like it going to determine teir personality or anything is it!? Ha ha!

bunsen · 21/09/2007 23:08

Humour - and I need spelling lessons!
