To think Cornwall, Lakes etc should brace for Cummings-related influx of second home owners?

It’s the start of half term. The nation has just found out that not only did a senior government advisor travel nearly 300 miles while infectious with coronavirus to stay in another property, but the Government endorses this as common sense, good parenting and the right thing to do.

They also know the police spoke to the family and ‘reminded’ them of the guidelines (that DC invented!) but there were no repercussions.

People have legally owned properties that they often pay mortgages on and certainly council tax. They haven’t seen those properties in months so probably do need to check on them. And almost certainly do want a holiday.

I think that people will now think if the Government think what DC did is ok WITH Covid, then going to a second home from a lower R area, without known Covid, without likely Covid due to lockdown is fine. And they know the police won’t (almost certainly can’t now) do anything.

AIBU to think the second home owners are packing as we speak? Just my opinion (not going anywhere myself!) so I’m interested to see what people think.

YABU: People will still follow the rules or a sense of conscience.

YANBU: People will go to second homes now the government has introduced the idea of interpreting the rules to suit you.

I agree with you. We are being run by incompetents who think they are above the very rules they dictate to us.
People don’t have faith in how the country is being run and it would appear we have no consequences upheld in law for rule breakers.
It’s a bloody disaster.

A lot of people have made their own decisions through this. I don't see this will make a massive difference.

It's very childish for anyone to claim they understood the guidelines and why they were implemented, then abandon them because of the actions of anyone else, regardless of who they are.

I don't think most people were adhering just because they were told to.

The Attorney General tweeted to say that what Cummings did was acceptable. This could have massive implications for anyone charged by the police under lockdown rules.

I think people will start to go to their second homes, especially if their children aren’t going back to school, and I can’t say I’d blame them. Not because of the Cummings thing, but because we have have been restricted for long enough now and we’ve been told we can travel so it can be done safely.

Wow! So people can ask for their money back if they were fined since it’s not a law but a judgment call.

What if I steal from a wealthy supermarket but only do it because I don’t have enough money. Surely all laws could now have a ‘common sense’ interpretation.

Friends in Devon actually just texted to say their part-time neighbours have just arrived! So on that sample size of 1 I guess I’m not wrong, though obviously we don’t know if Dominic Cummings and the government response (worst band name ever) have led to their decision.
