AIBU to think the 80 item limit at Tesco is a bit tight?

I don't have delivery saver so I'm at the back of the queue as far as slots go still there's some available most weeks. I got a delivery today but there's none next weekend(payday for most) till the 7th. I could of just done a big shop but because of the limit I've had to book another slot for Monday which seems crazy.

Surely it must be hitting Tesco's bottom line as I (and I'm assuming most people)focus on getting basics first and luxury items which have higher profit margins get left or bought elsewhere.

Are people still panic buying? I'm just buying what we need/ refilling the stuff we've used up whilst the shops were bare. Shopping for two houses so maybe tighter than most.

80 items is roughly £140 worth of food for us which is plenty for the week for a family of 4.

CherryPavlova · 30/05/2020 18:27

I swapped to Sainsbury’s because they don’t have a limit and I can order as much as I want. The eighty items would be fine if they didn’t count every banana and onion as separate items.

Heroicasymphony · 30/05/2020 18:31

I don't understand saying that you buy single items to reduce packaging. They have to put items in bags so they can scan them anyway so you're not reducing anything much and you're making life more difficult for yourself by using up your item limit. Why would you do that?

Justtakeatowel · 30/05/2020 19:24

@Quornflakegirl but lots of us are shopping for others- I'm shopping for my neighbour and my dad weekly, they keep saying they want us to share etc but then don't help us out!

Tonz · 30/05/2020 22:23

Don't shop for others get them to get their own delivery. The shops are open if you need a big shop. The whole point of the limit is to reach more people. Some people can't leave their homes because they are shielding or isolating so the extra available slots are the only thing that is feeding them. If you can go to the shops to pick up extras why not just do your whole shop and leave the delivery to the people who have no other option but to use them. 80 items isn't enough for my family of 5 so I don't use it at all I just go get it myself as do many others

LoseLooseLucy · 30/05/2020 22:27

I got a delivery yesterday and it had gone up to 85 items.

MissMooMoo · 30/05/2020 22:49

I didn't even realise they had a limit of 80 still. We are a family of 4,although the youngest is only 3 months old so only buying nappies for her, but I have been able to do a week's shop easily. I even ordered 4 loose peppers last week!
Im sure they have done calculations and come up with 80 to ensure they can do as many deliveries as possible.

Justtakeatowel · 30/05/2020 23:27

@Tonz blimey that's a bit harsh for me to have to somehow teach my elderly neighbours to do their own delivery when they just aren't capable! It would take up more time than me doing the shop and not sure how I'd manage whilst socially distancing!

I get click and collect rather then delivery and manage on the limit as I also get a veg box and milk man. I won't feel guilty getting the click and collect as both my husband and I are key workers and don't have time to queue which is the norm where I live.

It's just annoying they don't consider some people need to shop for others.

Yubaba · 30/05/2020 23:41

Tesco have increased their delivery slots from 59,000 to 1.2 million in 3 months, the staff are working through the night to pick those shops. An 80 item limit might seem low but when you have that much to pick everyday there has to be a limit just so you can get the work done before the store opens.

Yubaba · 30/05/2020 23:42
  • 590,000 slots
Tonz · 31/05/2020 05:31

It's not harsh to say that at all. I'm sure if you know what your neighbours want enough to add to your own delivery then I'm sure you could book them their own and order for them instead. There have been pps saying they have to go out to shops twice a week because 80 items isn't enough so I don't see the problem of getting their own shop once a week. The limit is designed to reach people like your neighbours not for multiple houses shopping on the one slot. Just book two one for you and one for your neighbours

Tonz · 31/05/2020 05:37

I know some people just don't want to risk going to a supermarket right now and delivery is the safest option and I totally get that but it would be nice if they gave a thought to the people who are risking their health to pick it for you

Fifthtimelucky · 31/05/2020 09:36

I have continued to visit the supermarket (Tesco) once a week and there are no limits on the number of items you can buy in store (obviously I know the at going in is not an option for everybody).

There are definitely a lot more pickers in the store than there used to be and that obviously limits the number of other shoppers who can go in so that we can all maintain social distancing. That means that the limit also helps those of us who go in in person.

The queues to get in would be much longer if the pickers could buy more. They have to balance the needs of all types of customer and I assume they want to encourage as many of us as possible to go into the shop if we can, to ensure that delivery slots are available for those who really need them. I can go in person, so I do. If shopping in person became more difficult I might be more inclined to book a delivery.

overworkedandstressed · 31/05/2020 10:43

The limit isn't enough for me and my family but I understand why it is in place so I go out and do my own shopping. Does anybody thing Tescos is happy with less money from orders? They could be raking it in through all the extra deliveries if they had no limit but instead are easing the workload for their staff and getting them off the shop floor before the shop is busy protecting theirs and our health yet still reaching so many people who really need them.
Well done Tesco for putting their staff and customers safety before profit.
Tesco should be applauded for this decision not criticised

womaninatightspot · 31/05/2020 13:24

I suppose since Tesco have increased it to 85 they also agree it was a wee bit tight Grin I've decided to alternate Asda with thier unlimited orders and Tescos my preferred shop (because I like the wine meal deal for a tenner).

I thought I seen on my app that it’s gone up to 85 now? Or have I imagined it?

Still yeah 80 isn’t a lot of for a large family.

they do it so they can fit more deliveries onto one van to get them out quicker.
