To want to go on holiday in the UK this Summer?

windygag · 23/05/2020 20:31

Accepted that our Summer holiday in Europe won't be happening but debating about booking something in the UK.

I have 2 young dc & both DH & I have been wfh since March. DH lost his father recently & I think we could all do with a break & a change of scenery.

I'm worried if we don't book anything then everything will be booked or too expensive but equally if we do book we may lose the deposit.

What are others planning to do?

Cptart

We are in the same position - DH has been working on ITU throughout. I felt he needed a break.

My almost new touring caravan is in storage , we were so looking forward to having lots of time there this year. We spoke to the site owner where we had booked our seasonal pitch, he was non committal but hopeful of being able to open July/August . How it will work in terms of facilities ( it’s not a clubhouse kind of site so just loos, showers and a kitchen type place) I don’t know. We only use our loo for wee and have never used the shower as we refer using site facilities, but if desperate we would have to .

We are going to Norfolk in August

As long as things remain better then from 4th July our holiday company lady has said she can rent her property out.

whenwillthemadnessend · 24/05/2020 08:53

I booked Isle of Wight and Cornwall last year. I fully intend to go if govt allows. Isle of Wight lady has been in touch and confirmed.

Missed our Europe hols this month so I really want to go plus we need to be spending money to keep economy going.

drayco · 24/05/2020 09:04

We are booked in a cottage in North Devon for the last week in August.

Am really hoping it goes ahead- made this booking in 2018! So if it's cancelled I won't get into this property for 2 years again.

I really want to be able to go- but I do worry the experience won't be as good as though we self cater we do enjoy a couple of meals out and like to go on steam trains and whatnot with DS.

Iwantitidontwantit · 24/05/2020 09:14

I have a holiday in the uk booked for mid August. My concern is that even if restrictions lifted or not, how deeply are properties are going between guests? I'm not going crazy and isolating all my shopping and the like, but I am wfh and staying away from others as much as possible. Given the virus lives on hard surfaces for some time (depending how long varies where you ask, I know) have people who own holiday let's given any thought to this? Just wondering as would still love to go but feel would need to know a bit more about plans for this.

Daffodil101 · 24/05/2020 09:18

Cottage I’ve booked has extra cleaning in place. I take my own pillows anyway and I’ll be cleaning it myself, too.

HesterShaw1 · 24/05/2020 09:22

I work in tourism and we have been advised to plan on opening from 4th July

HesterShaw1 · 24/05/2020 09:24

Takeaways are open in you plan a bit (order in advance), beaches are open, the cliff path is open and I'm pretty sure outdoor attractions will open in some form.

AuntyRigsby · 24/05/2020 09:28

I'd rather boil my own arse, and eat it Grin

Bertoldbrecht · 24/05/2020 09:36

@Tempnamelady we are in the same boat too. Our tourer is stored at a lovely site in the dales. The season started at the start of March and we have managed one short trip there before lockdown just to clean and tidy it up in readiness for the rest of the year. Dp has spoken to the site owner and he suspects that in probability the communal bathrooms will stay shut. Like you we only use the caravan bathroom for weeing. With 5 of us including 3 teenage boys using it I think we’ll be going for very short trips Wink. On the other hand most of the caravans there are static with only a few tourers so maybe it won’t come to that.

Msmcc1212 · 24/05/2020 09:48

Don’t expect to be welcomed with open arms at these holiday places. Travel will increase the spread. Lots of holiday spots are in places with less hospital provision so staying away will help them to cope. We are not having a holiday this year for this reason. NHS staff are already exhausted in hot spots and will need to keep going. Children are being orphaned. Is your need to see different walls more important? Missing a holiday for a year is a small sacrifice to make.

windygag · 24/05/2020 09:55

@Msmcc1212 what part of I will only go if restrictions are lifted & it's deemed low risk did you miss?

OP posts:
windygag · 24/05/2020 09:55

Plus DH lost his father to Covid so we do understand the risks.

TARSCOUT · 24/05/2020 09:56

No, we will be staying at home and having days out. We always holiday in UK nowadays and I just can't be bothered having to travel at all. I've worked all through lockdown so will happily look at 4 walls instead of the one I've been staring at for however long now.

Quartz2208 · 24/05/2020 10:02

Msmcc12 because we continue on this trajectory until August the risks of CV should be low and frankly for tourist areas there will reach a point where the dangers of not having a tourist season at all in 2020 are worse.

I would be fine not having a holiday this year but I am aware of the fact that a lot of these areas economically are driven by people visiting and it needs by support. That is why I think we should be promoting holidays at home this summer holiday to get our economy back on track

Bouledeneige · 24/05/2020 10:22

I've got a cottage booked in August in Wales for late August and am hoping it will still happen. I'm happy to have change of scenery, walks and beaches and pick up a few take outs. The places I've booked are larger size do not restrictive if poor weather. Two older teens and me - and if restrictions are lifted - maybe even a friend or two. Will defer to next year if it's not possible this year.

Livingmybestliferight · 24/05/2020 11:17

I've got all angles covered! Made 2 UK hotel bookings in different areas depending on how things progress. Both are refundable. Also have flights and accommodation booked for mid July to Spain. They have declared they are opening to international tourists from 1st July so who knows! I think everyone needs something to look forward to.

Daffodil101 · 24/05/2020 12:05

Children being orphaned = nobody is allowed to go on holiday.

Do we have figures on how many children have been orphaned? Are we talking adult children?

ploopmoop · 24/05/2020 12:24

Plus children being orphaned happens without Covid so no holidays ever seems sensible.

DartmoorChef · 24/05/2020 12:37

Have a lot of children been orphaned?

Daffodil101 · 24/05/2020 12:42

Because if children have been orphaned, I definitely won’t go on holiday in the UK

StoutDrinker2019 · 24/05/2020 13:52

If we don't support our UK destinations there won't be any holidays in 2021. We are planning at least one camping holiday to see family in July and August. The industry will be decimated if we all stay at home.
