To expect someone on a crowded commuter train with their 8 or 9 yo NOT to read out loud in a booming voice all the way into London...

But surely, overall, better than being faced with people snogging on a crowded commuter train first thing in the morning
EEURGH

mindalina · 20/09/2007 11:54

No I don't think you are unreasonable, think commuters train should be left for commuters as much as possible, used to drive me round the bend when people were noisy and/or generally inconsiderate first thing in the morning.

Now I don't work cos of the baby, I stay well away from commuter trains. Don't want to make a nuisance of myself.

oliveoil · 20/09/2007 11:54

I have a woman who gets on my bus

she talks like this for about 30 mins EVERY MORNING on her mobile

yeah, like Gary? I told him? yeah! Never!! Noooooooooooo!! so she said he said nowt and I said noooooo, ya neva,

mindalina · 20/09/2007 11:55

At least you can block out the snogging by closing your eyes.

Unless of course they're very enthusiastic I suppose...

Bink · 20/09/2007 11:58

Ta dino . Was the story of the battle of Jericho this morning, thinly disguised homily on the Advantages of Being Co-operative.

Maybe CD's train-mate was just a silly show-off, who knows ... Had to be there, perhaps.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 20/09/2007 11:58

"She immediately BOOMED (much louder) oh I am going to ask your school for my MONEY BACK!!!

(just to ensure everyone knew she paid for said school wink)"

ahh - but sometimes I joke that I'm going to "ask for my money back" - even though DS1's go to state school/nursery

CountessDracula · 20/09/2007 12:06

No not at all caroline
I am a public school girl
dh is a public school boy
dd will be the same no doubt

I am not an inverted snob I just find that sort of stuff cringey esp in teh context of her boominess

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 20/09/2007 12:07

(actually I do hope that dd isn't a public school boy, I don't agree with sex change before the age of majority)

That's why I cycle in to work, CD - avoids all those dreadful types on the tube!

(Haven't read a book or a paper for weeks, though - bit tricky that, cycling and reading at the same time.)

Cammelia · 20/09/2007 12:23

CD, is Mourinho going to Spurs d'ya think ?

Marina · 20/09/2007 12:23

Bink, I take that line too - if travelling with my children, we chat. I do tend to try and keep my voice down though . This morning we had why animals don't mind bee-stings and how the allergic ones cope without epipens. Cows' hides are made of rubber apparently, which means that the stings just bounce off them (dd's contribution to the debate). But this was staggering along the pavement rather than in a crowded train

curiouscat · 20/09/2007 12:25

YANBU. People on commuter trains should shut up and never use mobiles either. We're knackered and trying to get home and are not interested in their stupid news.

GroaningGameGirly · 20/09/2007 12:25

The downside of cycling, however: when you get your bag ready, DON'T forget to pack underwear as well as clothes. I am sitting at my desk without a stitch on under my dress. In fact, there is a bulldog clip holding together the front of my dress which is rather revealing without the vest-with-built-in-bra-thingy I usually wear underneath it, and there's a breeze under the skirt ...

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 20/09/2007 12:27

The aforementioned woman sounds a twat.

HOWEVER....trains are note solely the preserve of commuters. I had to take my DDs to a funeral in Newcastle, and had to travel on a so-called commuter train. I couldn't have been made to feel more uncomfortable if I had an obviously nasty case of leprosy. DD2 had just turned 2 at the time, and wasn't on her best behaviour, having been woken at 6am. At one point she was crying, when I heard a very audible 'Oh, FFS' from a seat in front of me. We were all children once, and this attitude of 'Don't bother me, I'm far too important' pisses me right off. It is public transport, after all. Tolerance is a virtue.

Chickhick · 20/09/2007 12:29

I would have found it annoying too.

I must admit that since twiglett started a thread on an annoying woman who used a dramma voice whilst reading to her lo in a cafe that I am now reluctant to read in public.

The other day we were in the book shop cafe and I was reading to ds in a very monotone dreary voice and ds was getting annoyed because I wasn't reading in my usual Jackanory style and I had to try and explain that I couldn't incase there were any Mumsnetters about!

Cammelia · 20/09/2007 12:30

ROFL

I alwasy get dh to read to dd on trains into London so that mumnetters will think "What a good dh"

Marina · 20/09/2007 12:35

Blimey GroaningGameGirly give that woman a prize for the most creative use of office stationery! But surely you could fashion yourself some drawers out of post-it notes

GroaningGameGirly · 20/09/2007 12:42

I can just see it now ...

Boss: Why are there no more post-its in the suppliers drawer?

Me: 'Cos I forgot to put my knickers on and had to make some paper ones.

I was going to nip out at lunchtime and buy some, but do you know what, I don't think I'll bother. I'm rather enjoying the fresh air and I've had an unusual amount of male callers at my desk this morning, presumably so they can all get a good look down my dress at my tits (which, TBH, are a bit of a disappointment if they're not being held up by a good, padded bra).

Well I think he might go to spurs
though why he would want to is beyond me

Am eagerly awaiting the implosion of Chelski... this is v entertaining

It is possible to read quietly
Just as it is possible to have a quiet mobile convo

Some people just think their lives are so bloody fascinating that everyone needs to hear

that pisses me off

I have been known to say "no-one is interested in you could you pls keep it down" before

Marina · 20/09/2007 12:44

Snigger at batters and the priapic commuters of S London
I just tread hard on their big, manly feet on my way out

Bundle · 20/09/2007 12:46

elbows get me batters (ie mistaken belief that both of them belong to him. and it is always him)

but maybe they're directly (inversely) related to penis size

Cammelia · 20/09/2007 12:49

Am I right in remembering you support the other team CD

CountessDracula · 20/09/2007 12:51

I do
Last night was fun heheh

Have a feeling am going to get good value from my season ticket this year
