Discounts for blue light cards

This possibly makes me incredibly mean spirited, but I am getting really cross at seeing so many retailer - both national and local falling over themselves to give discounts to all blue light card holders. My friend is in the police and has been working from home the entire time with less work do do than normal. My BIL is a senior doctor who again is the quietest he has been in years. They both agree they should not be singled out for these privileges. So effectively retailers are giving discounts to those whose incomes have not been affected and are in the most secure jobs for the future. When probably about 20% of those are deserving. It's all just for PR..

Am I just a miserable cow?

nokidshere
Also ban cycle to work schemes, childcare vouchers because not everyone is a parent, staff discounts in retail, any health and fitness schemes through work, any company rewards scheme.

Also, make sure that nobody has any sick pay because some jobs don't have them. Reduce everyone's holiday to the minimum. Get rid of any occupational maternity pay and certainly stop companies offering good pensions because some companies don't offer more than the minimum.

It would be terrible if anyone had anything good.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 23/05/2020 18:58

Ah we don’t have papa johns nearby. But Pizza Hut kindly dropped off 50 pizzas at our a&e yesterday which were greatly appreciated Grin

WaterOffADucksCrack · 23/05/2020 22:52

I'll never understand why some people can't stand other's getting something they're not. It's so sad.

*50% off Papa John’s Pizza tonight! But there's no Papa John's near me so I can't use it waaahhhhh! So no one should get it. Don't you dare buy that pizza at a discount!!!

It's really up to the retailers. It costs you nothing. And if you really don't like it shop elsewhere!

Saturns · 24/05/2020 01:44

It does sound a bit mean spirited.
I'm in the emergency services... I'm still expected to go into people's homes with no PPE provided, I'm still expected to deal with drunk and/or violent people (try doing that from 2 metres away), people are still spitting in mine and my colleagues faces.
And you're upset I might get 10% off a pair of trainers?

NHS for 31 years now and never had a blue light card. Thanks OP might look into it nowGrin

the police have lost sooo many benefits over the years which used to compensate for the poor pay and hours.

the wages look good but i lose around 30% of my pay in pension, legal cover etc. The police pension is good but we pay for it and it get changed at the drop of a hat, meaning our working years get extended / contributions increased etc

working shifts and nights actually reduces your life expectancy, but also the shifts get changed at the drop of the hat, shifts extended and no plan you ever make is solid as if the sh@t hits the fan our leave/ rest days are cancelled.

you often need a long commute for safety, police officers often get targeted if they live in their work area also their children get ostracised or targeted because of so those who live in area often have to conseal
their jobs from neighbours/ children etc

i live out of area so i don't have to do this but have a long costly commute.

we used to get help with mortgages etc to help us live in nicer areas so we don't get targeted but this stopped.

we are expected to put ourselves on duty if off duty and we see a crime happen/ vulnerable person.

Added to that the pure horror we can see and experience, with no real right solution, the stress levels can be unbearable.

so not having to que at tesco when i've had a hard day at work and can't get the images out of my head, is really appreciated.

Having the lady at aldi who let me jump the que thank me for keeping her safe, was the nicest thing that happened that week and actually made me cry.

it's not the perks it's the message that we are appreciated that means the world

Lots of retailers offer certain discounts to select groups of people.

Teachers can get discounts.

Students can get discounts.

Blue light workers can get discounts.

Some employees can get cash bonuses from their employer.

Some employees earn a monthly commission.
