Gratitude Pebble - AIBU to not understand the meaning of this?

My DH and I are in our 70s and have complex health needs and we are both in the shielding category so haven’t left home in months now. We don’t have any family in this country apart from a DD and her DF.

This morning while bringing in a parcel, I noticed that someone has entered our property (gate, long driveway) and left a shop/online bought pebble with the word GRATITUDE on our doorstep.

I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a kind thought/random act of kindness or if it’s a trend at the moment (we aren’t on social media). It’s actually upset DH quite a bit as he feels someone is trying to send a message that we are somehow seen as ungrateful and need to be outwardly seen as having more gratitude. It’s also made us feel a little more vulnerable as someone has clearly went to some effort to deliver this as we aren’t directly on the road. We’ve asked everyone we know if it was them (in a friendly way!) and the general consensus is “no it wasn’t us, how odd!”. We’ve also recently had someone drop a camping chair in our garden oddly!
Our DD has tried to say maybe it is someone who wants to say they are grateful to us for some sort of a kindness but she’s also a little spooked as she’s been doing a lot of voluntary work helping a lot of people and has been having trouble with a stalker since lockdown who knows she grew up in this house and has previously trespassed here (although not for many years now).

Does anyone know what these pebbles are meant to represent?

It’s become a common thing to do & I’m sure the person that left it meant well, but agree it’s annoying!

Grin @TenShortStories

In all honesty we wanted rid and it went in the bin!

I should be grateful for whoever went out of their way to do that really shouldn’t I?

I would find this odd. Whoever put it there probably didn't put a lot of thought in to what was written on it and how it might be interpreted. It also seems like they probably don't know you personally.

I got something for Christmas that said "bee kind" with a bee on it. So I thought, hmm, you don't think I am kind enough then? Haha. A couple of weeks later when I saw the person we were chatting and they mentioned the "bee happy" thing they had given me.... So I don't think they had looked too closely or thought too much about it. I just concluded maybe I was being a bit paranoid 😅

Haha ChikiTiki I wouldn’t have taken “BeeKind” kindly either haha!

This reminds me of that episode of Friends where Phoebe says something about there being no such thing as an unselfish act. It’s probably been done as a “Random Act of Kindess” which has probably made the “do-er” feel great about themselves whilst simultaneously making vulnerable recipients feel scared and a bit paranoid. People really need to think things through a bit better before doing things anonymously.

Oh that’s very annoying

I’d be tempted to put up a sign saying “please don’t leave crap on my doorstep”.

whiplashy · 22/05/2020 23:21

sounds like someone bought a job lot of ‘joy’ ‘gratitude’ ‘happy’ ‘kindness’ crap on eBay and is skipping round the village dumping them on people

Oh God someone has taken it upon themselves to put hand written/drawn posters up on fences and gates on my local walk. Things like "Do more of what you love" and "Be grateful for what you have". It gives me the rage. Stop telling me how to feel and what to do you complete stranger, I'll tell my DH who is working 11 hour days and is away this bank holiday weekend in his role as critical key worker to do more of what he loves. He's got loads of spare time right now. Grrrr.
