To be a bit suspicious?

I was just sitting in my garden enjoying a nice cup of tea when a young man (aged early twenties I would say) popped his head over the fence and said him and his dad were working locally in the area and had noticed my hedges need trimming back and he handed me a flyer. He was really polite and very sweet. He also gave me a mobile number to phone directly as the ones on the flyers get busy.

I have never been approached like this so was a bit suspicious.

I have googled the company and looked on Facebook and nothing has come up. Even googled the phone numbers and email address and nothing. Aibu to be suspicious?

Picking up work that way is common for some trades, however if they're genuinely working at your neighbors house or very locally, they'll inform you of exactly where, in the 'spiel,' because they want you to come see the job and if possible get recommended by your neighbors and most don't want to be mistaken for dodgy cowboys.
Large amounts of customers can be got for minimum advertising outlay that way, as good work can pretty much sell itself.

Thanks for your replies. He did have an Irish accent so I think he was an Irish traveller. Because there was no mention of them online anywhere I was suspicious.

Dodgy as hell!

Definitely travellers. Also never trust anyone that only has a mobile number on their flyers

I'd agree, get someone with an official business address to do your jobs. After several burglaries in my area, the police caught the culprit-the friendly window cleaner who called casually asking for work!

We get them knocking once every few months and they're always "doing some work up the road for one of your neighbours." Always avoid.
