To ask if you are slim/ skinny and you maintain that by fasting or a diet, what is it?

I’m 5’3 and usually around 8st 3. Just weighed myself for the first time in months (pre lockdown) and I’m 8st 6.

I’m at my happiest and look my best/ slimmest when I’m pretty much bang on 8st. However, trying to lose those usual 3lbs (now 6lbs BlushSad is just so difficult for me. I really have to practically eat nothing and i do it for a day, get fed up and go back to normal and just live with the few extra 1lbs.

I do about 15,000 steps per day and am generally fit and active. My diet could 100% be better, I am definitely a ‘carby’ person and love nothing more than dunking a few hobnobs into a cup of tea when I get home from work each day. Yes, there are apples and oranges there but when I’m feeling hungry I just don’t feel they’ll do. For dinner we pretty much have whatever we want, I’ll try and include as much veg as I can with each meal and I only really like lean meat, but we do eat a lot of pasta dishes with no doubt fatty sauces etc.

Basically what I’m trying to say is I think a lot of my problem is diet as like I say, I’m fairly active.

I’d like to try a diet/ fasting regime where it doesn’t feel like I’m constantly starving and feeling lightheaded. I have considered fasting or diets like the 5:2 but the thought of only eating 500 cals a day horrifies me. It’s nothing, I have no idea what I’d even eat to keep me within that calorie range unless I only ate one small meal a day?!

I guess I’m just wondering whether people that are say slim or skinny and a light weight, how do you lose weight?

I'm just under 5'4 and currently weigh 7 stones 4. I have gained a stone since lockdown. I am actively trying to gain weight right now with the hope of getting to 8 stone, but lose it very quickly. I lose weight because I don't eat enough. I don't eat breakfast or lunch and have been known to not eat dinner until midnight... I genuinely forget to eat a lot of the time. I've started drinking meal replacement milkshakes to build myself up a bit and am trying to have a sandwich at lunch. My dinner time food is whatever I want. I don't stop myself from eating things, I eat a lot of carbs, a lot of fat, and I try to include a lot of vegetables. I think what I eat is quite healthy, I just don't eat regularly enough.

By the way 6 pounds is so little, and it might be water weight? I have started weighing myself regularly since trying to gain and I weigh exactly 6 pounds less every morning than I do when I go to bed. I assume that is water.

Thanks guys. I just wish I could be 8st and easily stay there. I really do look and feel my best at it, I know it’s only a few lbs less than my usual weight but it really does make a difference. I think it’s because I have quite a round face and I get a more defined jaw line at 8st Blush my stomach is also more flat and my upper arms slimmer.

I actually only eat 2 meals a day, I have half a bagel with peanut butter for breakfast at 8am and then don’t eat again until I get home from work about 4.30pm, where I usually scoff the 3-4 hobnobs Blush then I’ll have my dinner. Sometimes with a glass of wine, sometimes without and then a snack after dinner (a packet of crisps)

Actually, looking at all the above, I could cut out the 4pm snack unless it was an apple say and absolutely not snack after dinner, so no packet of crisp and that might actually help!!

If I don’t eat from 8am- 6/7pm, that’s kinda a small fast right there anyway?!

I’ll start with that tomorrow and see how I get on. If by the end of next week I haven’t lost any weight I’ll think about fasting or something.

I think my problem is I LOVE unhealthy food. Actually love it and I can either not eat it and eat very sensibly and be 8st or eat unhealthy most days and be 8st 3 or 4 (or 6 like currently Blush)

DH has done the food shop the last month or so, I normally do it and tend not to buy too much crap as then I can’t eat it. He however, brings loads home and then I just end up eating it as it’s there. I need to get rid of the last few bits and then take over the food shop again myself and just not buy any crap.

I'm 5ft6 and 10.4 was 10.8 last week. Slimming world. I'm trying to get bk to 9.5 st

allfalldown47 · 21/05/2020 18:03

I'm 5ft 4 and hover around 8st 10, I can easily lose weight and go down by 7lbs but I'm a terrible snacker and love chocolate, biscuits etc too much.
I honestly think as I get older, it's just the way I'm built, I don't exercise and have never counted calories or dieted.
The only big difference between me and my friends who struggle with their weight is that I'm a lifelong vegetarian and I rarely drink alcohol.

ChocAuVin · 21/05/2020 18:05

I’m 5’8, now 41 and at my heaviest I was just tipping into 12 stone. I lost the difference mid-2018 and have been stable ever since. Checking my health app now I see that my average weight over the past year is 9.3 stone. It has hardly fluctuated. Average BMI for same period is 19.7.

I intermittently fast — loosely. I eat low carb, low fat — 99% of the time.

That’s how I lost the excess weight. Plenty of good saturated fat, organic meat, tonnes of veg and eggs. Red wine, bit of Prosecco, white rum and soda.

I eat to hunger. And I eat bloody well. I’m now simply less hungry because the food I eat is satiating and nourishing. I rarely start to even think about food these days until gone noon/2 pm.

As an ex sugar addict (I genuinely don’t think I went a day in my twenties and early thirties without at least some chocolate or sugary treat) since overhauling my way of eating, I have never once counted a calorie, or worried about a macro. I feel satiated pretty much all the time and OH! The SLEEP quality since ditching my dependence on carbs is untrue! Smile

Siameasy · 21/05/2020 18:05

I’m amazed at the variation in people of the same height. I got below 9st at one point (5’4”) but I started to look skeletal and feel weak. Yet I am posting giving advice to OP who is just one inch shorter and over a stone lighter than I am at the mo!! Do you have a small frame OP? Maybe I have a bigger frame?! I would think you must be tiny but some people naturally are.

ChocAuVin · 21/05/2020 18:06

Sorry — low carb HIGH fat! Never low fat! Ever!

MasterBruceBalloon · 21/05/2020 18:09

OP, why don't you have a healthy snack in the day like carrots and hummus? Then you won't probably won't feel like you need the biscuits when you get in from work. And if you're still hungry after dinner, why not have some fruit as pudding?

GenevaMaybe · 21/05/2020 18:19

I am 5’5” and 8st 7lb. I feel much better when I’m about 8st 2lb. Anything under 8 stone and I look quite unwell.

I was always 7stone 10lb til I had my first baby. Then my weight was 8stone 2lb for a while. After my second baby it has settled at 8st 7lb and only goes down if I get ill with gastro.

I eat toast and jam or a banana for breakfast and lots of coffee.
For lunch I have soup and bread or a large salad with bread.
Often I have a handful of crisps or Sal tree d nuts for a snack in the afternoon.
Dinner is meat or fish and loads of veg and some dark chocolate. I have a glass of wine every night.

I actually think it’s the daily glass of wine that has kept my weight up!!! But it’s needed because of child #2 Grin

withlotsoflove · 21/05/2020 18:30

I’m slim. About 9 and a half stone. I’m 5ft 7 and a half!
I walk for miles and train with kettle bells. One very heavy and a lighter one.
I eat a little and often / almost no sugar. Lots of green tea. I’m 48.

satsumasane · 21/05/2020 18:32

Fasting and keto

Not all the time just as and when I need to get back down to the weight I am happy at

PicklePig31 · 21/05/2020 18:37

BMI of 19 here..

I use MFP if I’ve gained a few lbs. Restrict to 1200 cals a day and I’m good to go within 10 days.

Calories in vs calories out. That simple.

Exercise is a bonus and makes you toned. It doesn’t help me lose weight but have visible abs (I do it for my mental health though)

ElectricTonight · 21/05/2020 18:43

I have tea in the morning, small snack for lunch and then dinner and chocolate. I'm slim but probably unhealthy!

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 21/05/2020 18:51

I'm 5 foot 2, & somewhere in between 9st 7 and 10 stone. I am a size 10& luckily I think I have a taste limit. Every now and then I really go for something, then I get sick of it and go off sweet things, for example, for months.
I like chocolate but only so much.
My weight might sound a lot by I am big busted and have only ever been sub 9 stone when ill. My GCSE textiles dress hangs off me.

All things in moderation and more veg than anything else.

Lulooo · 21/05/2020 18:52

Reading how much you all ear is making me realise why I'm so overweight!
I eat about 3 meals a day and snack in-between too. I hardly eat fruit and most snacks are calorie laden and unhealthy. I also eat a lot of fried foods.

I always thought I just needed to make a few tweaks but reading this, I can see how I need a complete overhaul.

Octopus37 · 21/05/2020 18:55

9st2ish here, trying to lose half a stone, I'm 5ft5. Got up to 9st11 at the end of last year and felt awful. I'm a small frame. Weighed 8st11 before I had my first DS (he is just about to turn 13), but lost a stone breastfeeding. Stayed around 8st ish, occasionally going up to 8st7, but then after turning 40 it got harder, I am now 45. I have been 8st7 briefly in 2016, got to just under 9st in 2018. Struggle with will power tbh. Feel better than I did, but could do with another half a stone gone, or at least to weigh 8st something. I have tried low carb and fasting in the past and tbh just find eating what I want but less more sustainable with quite a lot of walking. Have found in harder during lock down and thats when my weight loss has plateaued. For me 8st6 would be a pipe dream, have the opposite face problem, if I lose too much it really shows in my face, my face is v slim at the weight I am now (shame about my bum and tummy lol)

willsa · 21/05/2020 19:00

I am your height, weigh 8st.
Half the days in a week I eat only dinner, followed by a small treat. Other days I eat a small healthy breakfast too.
So intermittent fasting for me. It is a habit now.

I don't feel militant about it and some days overindulge with treats and cocktails/wine.
But easily back to intermittent fasting the next day.

Thestrongestavenger · 21/05/2020 19:12

I’m around the same height and weight as you. When I gain a couple of pounds I cut out sugar and crisps for a few weeks and it really works for me. Really difficult for the first few days especially if you’ve got a sweet tooth like me! I’ve now made some permanent sugar free healthier swaps and feel so much better for it.

CottonSock · 21/05/2020 19:17

Eat a healthy lunch like soup or salad and ditch the hob nobs.

Imapotato · 21/05/2020 19:24

I’m 5ft 3.5 and currently weigh 10st7, 10 days ago I was 10st12.

My goal is to get to around 9st, I think I look good at that weight. If I was to get skinnier I’d be worried I’d get more wrinkles (I’m currently very baby faced at nearly 35).

I know I was eating too much previously, but it had just become habit.
Now I’m going without breakfast. Having a sandwich and a piece of fruit for lunch and a slightly smaller portion of my normal dinner. Some days I’ll have a small treat eg. A little bit of chocolate.

I’ve lost 5lb in 10 days, which I’m quite pleased with.

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/05/2020 19:28

At your size it’s probably the daily hobnobs keeping you from losing those last 6 pounds.

ChocAuVin · 21/05/2020 22:18

@Lulooo — that was me! Couldn’t understand as it never felt excessive.

The difference for me was first, learning through gentle intermittent fasting that it was okay to feel a tiny bit hungry before a meal and that snacks actually impeded my insulin levels from being healthy and then, learning that carbohydrates (specifically simple sugars and processed foods) were not the ‘treat’ I thought I deserved — they were actually ruining my life and throwing me chemically and hormonally off balance in a way that meant what I actually deserved was to treat myself better by avoiding them MOST of the time Smile

stopgap · 21/05/2020 22:23

I’m 5’7.5 and am the heaviest I’ve ever been: bang on nine stone. I do 16:8, I’m lifting heavy weights but eating more than usual, as I like being this size and it takes a lot for me to maintain weight. I’ve been 8.5 stone forever, but it doesn’t look good when you’re tallish and almost 43.

SophieB100 · 21/05/2020 22:29

I'm 5'8" and weigh 9 and a half stone.
Size 8-10.
I've maintained this weight for six months (lost over 4 stone in a year previously).
I maintain by: eating wholegrains and unrefined carbs in limited portions. Eating a lot of fruit and veg. Lean protein, limited dairy and fats. Portion control and 3 meals a day without snacks.

I never get hungry because the foods I eat are filling and nutritious. I don't believe in cutting out food groups altogether - but avoid processed foods and saturated fats and sugar.
