Is your primary school opening - poll

Greysparkles · 20/05/2020 19:17

Received a detailed email today from our primary school on how the return will work on June 1st

They propose to have all students from R, year 1 and year 6 (who wish to go) full time Monday - Friday with staggered drop off/pick ups.

Another primary half a mile away isn't opening at all.

I'm curious to see how many schools are opening and how many are not.

So YABU - school closed
YANBU - school open

Our council are advising nursery from 1st June, schools YR & Y1 from 15th and Y6 from 29th

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/05/2020 20:54

Ours are opening from 1st June for all YR, Y1 and Y6 whose parents want them to attend. It will on a one week on, one week off basis.

spanieleyes · 20/05/2020 20:58

We're opening for R/1/6 as required. All the preparations have been made and we will be ready. Of course, by then the Government will probably have decided that we are not going to open or have to open to years 2/3/4 or perhaps to those with blue eyes!

Chillipeanuts · 20/05/2020 21:03

Greysparkles

Well obviously ultimately its up to the government.”

No, the Giver meant have back-pedalled somewhat. At today’s briefing it was stated that 1st June was never a firm deadline and the decision was down to individual authorities. Many of whom are insisting upon up, running and proven track and trace before they return their schools.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 20/05/2020 21:45

I think I saw in the news ticker that 1500 primaries aren't opening.

SnackSizeRaisin · 20/05/2020 21:45

@MonkeyToesOfDoom
they won't be leaving the classroom for lunches or for play times this sounds both cruel and unnecessary. Why can't they go out to play I wonder? Obviously staggered from other classes. Seems to me as though some schools are making it as unwelcoming as possible to make a political point!

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/05/2020 21:50

Why can't they go out to play I wonder?

Because they can't guarantee the children will remain distanced and don't want to add more people to the bubble like playground supervisors. The teachers and TAs can't be everywhere at once.

underneaththeash · 20/05/2020 21:56

They'll all open - the government will make them - can you imagine if the hospitals/supermarkets chose not to open...

Breadandroses1 · 20/05/2020 21:56

Ours is opening 4.5 days a week for nursery, R,1 and 6. Very workable plan. Lunches in classroom but still out to play - all the outside space has been divided up by bubble. Big MAT which I think has had a lot of resources to throw at it.

We're also lucky with the building- it's newer (as in 90s rather than Victorian) with multiple entrances and quite good outdoor space for a London school. Much more challenging in an old building.

user1000000000000000001 · 20/05/2020 21:57

There is no expectation to make children distance within their bubbles. That school is being unnecessary to make a point.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 20/05/2020 22:12

The government can't force a school to open. Some councils have said that it is not safe to open in their area.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 20/05/2020 22:15

Each bubble can only play with their bubble. If your friend is in another bubble and in the playground then it's too tempting to play with them.

Some schools are staggering playtimes but I wonder if playground supervisors are supervising every bubble or if the adult assigned to that bubble has to supervise play?

Crunchymum · 20/05/2020 22:15

Opening for y6 only (and continuing with keyworker / vulnerable children as they have had all along)

SmokedGlass · 20/05/2020 22:17

Ours isn’t here in Bristol, being delayed a week or two

Missingmemarbles · 20/05/2020 22:19

Ours is opening on 15 June for year R. Staggered start times, part time, groups of 15, not with usual teacher, no guarantee they'll be with their friends. Children can only play out with a set group of 4 others. No packed lunches. Sandwiches will be served to them all, no hot food. No book bags, reading books or pencil cases. Got the feeling the school was doing all it could to put us off sending them back.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/05/2020 22:23

Trying to minimise bubbles will have to be done. Donate parents expecting teachers and TAs to supervise from 9-3.15 including drop offs, pick ups, lunch times, play times? That seems unfair.
So what? Bring in play supervisors and add to the bubble? Or one supervisor to oversee multiple bubbles? That mixes bubbles straight away.

Now people can say schools are making a point, that's fine. Personally I'd say they're trying to keep peoples children safe in unprecedented times by taking all steps they can. Criticising them for that is beyond ridiculous.

MondeoFan · 20/05/2020 22:25

I haven't heard anything. Had an email a week ago to say they were weighing everything up and need to ensure they keep everyone safe to include parents and teachers and not just the children. Haven't heard anything since.
I'm expecting to hear by this Friday really as half term next week. I'd have thought they'd sort it by then

TellerTuesday4EVA · 20/05/2020 22:26

We had a very detailed plan sent out yesterday then a total about turn today with a letter to say they will not be opening 1st June, they will review each week. The first being 8th June with plans taking a week to implement so 15th at the earliest but I don't honestly think it will happen

Greysparkles · 20/05/2020 22:29

Was there any reason given for the change of decision @TellerTuesday4EVA

Redwinestillfine · 20/05/2020 22:31

Ours isn't opening on 1 June and definitely not for another 2 weeks after that. They haven't confirmed when they will after that.

crustycrab · 20/05/2020 22:41

Local school opening to year 6 only. Social distancing within bubbles and from other bubbles.

Anyone purposely breaking the social distancing rule or hugging/holding hands will be sent home and possibly not allowed to return

TheSultanofPingu · 20/05/2020 22:54

It sounds to me that the school is doing all it can to keep your child safe Missing, they are following guidelines. It isn't all some sneaky plan to stop you from sending your child to school.

crackofdoom · 20/05/2020 23:04

Yr 6 from 8th June.

At present, they're completely closed, and pulling every trick under the sun to try and get key workers not to send their kids in: "Well, if I were in YOUR position, I think my kids would be much happier being looked after by Grandma and Grandad (who are obviously in their 70s)"Hmm

No plans to open for R and Y1, even if you're vulnerable and struggling (yup, that's me).

HedgeHogFoxBadger · 20/05/2020 23:18

I dont understand how this is so different for each school? Schoosl have been told to prepare to open on 1st june. My child is in reception. I received a very detailed explanation as the how they will put measures in place. There will be no square to sit in at break time but an allocated space for the 'bubble' group to play in. There will be maths and english and reading activities everyday. Drop off and pick up times will be staggered.
How can schools be so different? One local school has pretty much said dont send your children back. My school are welcoming children back.....

saraclara · 20/05/2020 23:22

I'm not in the UK and ours opened a week ago last Monday. No choice in sending the kids back or not as you have a legal obligation to send them to school. There's an exception if the child or close family member Is shielding (proof from doctor required). Full classes, full time.

How many cases are there in your country now, @MountainousLake?
