To feel that it's unfair that keyworkers cant be furloughed

Just want to rant mainly at the government. My husband and I are both keyworkers. I have currently moved out of home as have been exposed to covid 19 and didn't fancy taking it home to my family.
Because of this my husband has not been able to work and is on a zero hours contract so no work no pay.
Apparently key workers can not have furlough pay. All we are asking for is 3 weeks pay as I hope to go home at the weekend.
I know its pathetic but I feel let down by the rules. I have continued to work while many around me have gone off with stress. I have not had a day off sick since 2012. My husband is on a zero hours contract as the flexibility has allowed us to manage childcare needs.
I dont want a medal and realise life is hard for lots of us right now but feel financially punished for being keyworkers.

That's why when this is over a Universal Basic Income should be set up and given to ALL. Crisis like these would be much easier to manage. Sorry back to subject

@glitterwobbles I think you've really misunderstood the whole thing. If you're still coming into contact with covid patients you're still at risk just as much as you were three weeks ago. The test is most effective within 5 days of showing symptoms, you're not showing any. You could test negative but have picked up the virus the next (or even the same) day. I'm really confused by your logic. I do, however, totally appreciate the stress you're under and, from reading your posts, I believe you would be better to be signed off with stress/anxiety to allow you time to recharge.

The whole COVID thing is a bloody disaster really. Pretty much everyone has reason to feel sorry for themselves, to the extent I can't be bothered to list them all.

So I'm sympathetic. Seeing other people paid for no work must be hard if you're flat out and broke.

I think the furlough scheme has probably been over-used, for people it was never intended to cover. But then again, I'm not really an economic expert so I just leave these things to those who are.

There are loads of people not covered - it's a bonus, not an entitlement.

I feel sorry for us all but for those of us who get through this alive, without major loss of health or family members, then I think we have to be grateful.

We are both keyworkers and I feel fucked over. I'm really lucky as my job has relatively safe as is my DHs. But we work 8.30am - 5pm. Our DS goes to school but I have to go to work late and finish early to collect him and I'm losing 8hrs a week which I have to make up at weekends and evenings. In top of the cooking shopping cleaning and ironing. It makes me so jealous when people say oh isnt it lovely how the world has slowed down etc. I'm absolutely shattered and to be honest at breaking point. I can use annual leave but that would run out soon. DH has a bit if a commute so he cant take or pick up DS. He does help with the housework etc. I know I'm lucky to have a secure job but I'm so jealous of my furloughed friends.

My partner and I are both key workers There are NO benefits We are totally fucked over by everyone. Also we have not had a pay rise in over 7 years and have now been offered a piddley 1% Joke! Fuck your clapping it doesnt pay to put food on my kids table

Hotcuppatea · 21/05/2020 09:01

Have you tried to get a test? My colleague woke up with a sore throat on Monday, was tested on Monday afternoon, results came back negative on Wednesday morning and she was back to work.

GreytExpectations · 21/05/2020 09:05

Thanks OP. I just get a bit sensitive because I keep seeing so many people on here moaning about people who have been furloughed as if it's a paid for holiday. It's not like that at all and in reality a lot of families are worried about their finances and empowerment right now but yet plenty of mumsnetters are quick to be jealous whilst misunderstanding the situation

GreytExpectations · 21/05/2020 09:06

Employment not empowerment

We’d all like to be furloughed and get loads of money for doing fuck all but unfortunately we chose the wrong jobs. That’s life get on with it and stop whinging. If you chose zero hours because it suited your lifestyle you may think twice now. We live and learn. I would love to be furloughed but can’t be so hey ho.

Yes losing 20% income and then not having a job to go back to is definitely something to be jealous of Hmm

Noo3329 · 21/05/2020 11:22

I'll be the first to say yes, it is shit and thank you for what your doing to keep up all safe or fed(or both) you have fallen between the lines and very much the short straw. You definitely need to find out what your rights are..surely you shouldn't have to risk your life at this time and go without. I can totally see how this feels unfair as it is...go head on to talk to others and find out where and how you can get some help.sorry I cant offer practical advice..all the best

Please attempt cross see further than the end of your own nose. A 20% reduction in income will be a tipping point for many.

Be thankful that you are, presumably from your post, in a position which gives no risk of job loss or furlough. You will be the envy of the majority.

Xenia · 21/05/2020 16:26

Furlough is not 205 reduction in money unless the employer chooses that. Huge numbers of employers take the 80% from the state/tax payers and they pay the 20% and plenty will not be making those people redundant as loads offered furlough in industries not really very muchhit by furlough.

Much worse off that key workers or furlough people are those who have lost their jobs with no universal credit or those who have reduced income with no state help.
