In summary if you don't want to read the link to read the link:

A coalition of 122 countries are now supporting Australia's call for an independent probe to investigate the causes of the coronavirus pandemic that started in Wuhan, China.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has "felt the wrath" of Beijing, after China then threatened to decimate his country's economy unless the inquiry initiative is dropped.

The need for an inquiry will be voted on by 194 nations at the World Health Assembly on Tuesday and China has increased its belligerent threats towards Australia with a suggestion they may place a crippling tariff on barley exports

How dare they?

What do you expect from a communist dictatorship? Transparency? Honesty? No chance.
^ What she said

Foggyday124 · 18/05/2020 21:01

It is racism. People who ask this of China wouldn’t dream of expecting the US or Australia, or god forbid, the U.K., to let other powers meddle with their own politics and governments. This is ok because we are talking about the Chinese, and they know it.

I’m definitely not pro-China or wet market, fuck that, but the level of racism when one talks about China is astounding.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 18/05/2020 21:02

Be kinda nice if they stopped hacking our research facilities too

DamnYankee · 18/05/2020 21:03

Western democracy can't manage this either.

Fair enough. To a point. But, given a choice, would you rather live in a communist dictatorship or a western democracy?

I know which I'd pick

titchy · 18/05/2020 21:04

Fucking hell what is it with all the anti-Chinese threads today. Bots or racist MNers?

PicsInRed · 18/05/2020 21:04

It is racism

It's not racism, it's communism.

Badumtish.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2020 21:09

would you rather live in a communist dictatorship or a western democracy?

It depends which one. USA or Laos? Laos, definitely. China or Sweden? Sweden if I could learn the language! Cuba or Belgium? Belgium, no Cuba. Belgium. Cuba. I want rum and chips with mayonnaise.

The thing is there are dreadful and good examples of both. The ones that had a chance, like El Salvador and Nicaragua were crushed by the Americans. No better than the Chinese is my point.

Fluffybutter · 18/05/2020 21:30

I don’t have an issue with Chinese people , I have an issue with a corrupt Chinese “government”
If you can’t separate the two then that’s your issue

For what it's worth I would expect the UK to comply if the shoe were on the other foot. An investigation is paramount.

I'm sure Trump would kick up the same fuss as China is if it were asked of him, and then I and others would be condemning him too.

For the second time I'm not anti-chinese. I'm appalled at the CCP. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

The Chinese civilians have no say in what goes on. I know that. They are as innocent as the rest of us. I don't blame them for the fact their leaders are corrupt bastards.

I saw what those people were subjected to during lockdown. Videos of crying people being locked in their buildings with metal sheets being welded to the doors. Individuals being chased by officials, being hit and sprayed with god knows what, women being dragged violently by men in uniform.

So in regards to the investigation, the CCP can simply tell all of these countries to do one and it's cased closed?

An investigation can't be made mandatory irrespective of compliance?

All of these countries will continue working closely with China, despite the fact The CCP are deplorable and uncooperative?

It is a disgrace.

titchy · 18/05/2020 22:12

Ok if you're denying it's racist MNers it must be bots then. Which makes sense given there's so many. But is incredibly sinister.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2020 22:24

For what it's worth I would expect the UK to comply if the shoe were on the other foot. An investigation is paramount.

So if Azerbaijan wanted an 'independent' investigation and Russia, China and Saudi Arabia all signed to say it should happen, you'd expect the UK to say, "yeah totes, come on in"? Really? Because we think of ourselves as the Head Girl and Prefects of the world. The Chinese don't agree with that. They believe that the rest of the world is an ally, a market, irrelevant or hostile.

We wouldn't trust them to conduct an 'independent' investigation of us, why on earth would they believe we would?

boredtotears11 · 18/05/2020 22:42

What if they wanted war with us, would it still be called racist to condemn them? Was it racist to condemn Nazi Germany?

Poppy146 · 18/05/2020 22:43

Their beliefs are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, something that originated there has spread around the world and killed hundreds of thousands of people.

An investigation needs to be done and given how they tried to silence their own doctors, I don't think many will have faith in them to conduct their own and be trusted to be transparent.

So there is no way an investigation can be made mandatory? A powerful country yes but not above reproach.

It stinks.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2020 22:43

Was it racist to condemn Nazi Germany?

That is Godwin's Law and a logical fallacy. Good job.

happyandsingle · 18/05/2020 22:46

I've noticed how quiet china has become since the virus spread worldwide- kind of like it's not out problem anymore.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2020 22:47

So there is no way an investigation can be made mandatory?

The international community singularly failed to hold the US accountable for it's numerous illegal activities over the years so the question isn't really if something is mandatory. Because the answer is, 'follow the money'.

CoCoCorona · 18/05/2020 22:52

I completely blame the Chinese government for this. They are the cause of this global catastrophe and it wasn’t unprecedented. They were covering up the clusters of cases for months and let it spread. They’re on the defensive because they’re scared. They know they’ve fucked up.

I do not however blame the Chinese people, many of whom are oppressed and gagged incase they speak out of turn against the government.

You don’t have to be racist to oppose the politics of a country. Just like it’s not anti Semitic to oppose the Israeli government’s politics.

Poppy146 · 18/05/2020 22:55

This topic has just been on the news.

President Xi has said he will agree to an investigation but now isn't the time.

So when will be? Once he has ensured that certain information has been destroyed?

Why the delay I wonder.

DippyAvocado · 18/05/2020 22:58

China has spent decades building its power base to become the next global superpower - setting itself up as the world's manufacturing hub, purchasing Western government debt, creating huge financial support packages for the developing world (with conditions attached). They have made themselves deliberately indispensable.

PicsInRed · 18/05/2020 22:59

So when will be? Once he has ensured that certain information has been destroyed?

They reportedly, after the outbreak, destroyed their coronavirus samples at the lab for "safety", so... probably when the crime scene is good and gleaming clean.

Wendigogo · 18/05/2020 23:00

I hate to have splinters in my arse, but I think it's reasonable to say the CCP bares significant responsibility for the spread of the virus and acknowledge that certain countries (whose leaders have mismanaged the crisis within their borders) are now trying to hold China to a standard of transparency that they wouldn't meet themselves were the boot on the other foot.

Institutkarite · 18/05/2020 23:01

China plays the long game, always has always will.
When the ceasefire was declared in the Korean War. That war was essentially between North Korea backed by China and South Korea backed by America and others.
The peace talks were booked to take place in Geneva, China booked rooms for two years America booked for the weekend.
Western culture will never understand Chinese culture.
There is still a ceasefire in the Korean War.
