Would you go abroad for dental veneers?

My sister has decided to have a full set of dental veneers done in Turkey (obviously once the virus is under some sort of control).
She has told me that it’s ‘only’ around £5k over there as opposed to the £££’s it would be here in the U.K and she can combine it with a holiday.
I was horrified when she told me they will file down all of her teeth to little stumps, even the healthy ones and then replace with the veneers and all this can be done in 5 days.
Has anyone had this done? Seems to good to be true at such a low cost and speedy turnaround. What if she has some kind of issue a year or so later, surely it could end up costing her a fortune in the long run?

They look false. Over white. Why do people want to look false? When I watch TV with Americans, their teeth look false. I don't get it. Identikit smiles are not appealing. Why are the British falling into this craze?

I lost a front tooth due to an accident, and had veneers for a while but eventually they failed. I went to Turkey for 3 implants across the front and I saved a huge amount of money and they are excellent, just like my own teeth. I've had them for 7 problem free years now. I actually had to go twice, 6 months apart, as a bone graft was necessary. None of it was painful however and my teeth look great now and most importantly, they feel great.

I'm not entirely sure I would put any more faith in a British dentist than in a Turkish dentist. You can do quite a lot of research by googling the name of the dentist, practice and intermediary to see if any complaints about them.

I would never consider getting veneers for purely cosmetic purposes - they absolutely ruin healthy teeth.

Hungary is also another good place for dentists, or Spain - my dentist in the UK, who is very much in admiration of the Turkish work, is actually Spanish.

I have had dental work( implants) done in Budapest and I must say their cosmetic dentistry is not only cheaper , but definitely superior.
Many of them have performed thousands of implants and are much more experienced than British dentist. In fact my Hungarian dentist trains British dentist.

Katie price has just been in the papers with her stumps on show while getting her teeth capped again. How many times is she changing them? She's got money to spend on this when it goes wrong, most don't. And she looked horrendous.

wheelywheelynice · 03/09/2020 21:02

There is a much better alternative to veneers called Smilefast, invented by two UK dentists

pasteldechocolateconchispa · 03/09/2020 21:08

There was horrific picture of Katie Price after having hers out to replace them. Her teeth looked tiny.

I’d like them done but always worry I’d never have to money to get them replaced, so would do it when I knew I had cash the composite bonding looks good though

No, I think even bleaching your teeth may damage them. It's all short term gain for long term disadvantage but such is our society.

Katie Prive having her veneers replaced recently- very scary!

Katie Price!

My bottom teeth have been sensitive ever since I had them professionally bleached. I wish I'd never had it done. They're still exactly the same colour too!

2Rebecca · 03/09/2020 21:41

My dentist said it's only worth getting done if you're going to stop drinking coffee and tea and only have limited bleaching by a dentist (although he would say the last bit). He hadn't had his done, a bit like most opticians and ophthalmologists I know wear glasses rather than have laser eye surgery.

LucyRivers167 · 03/09/2020 21:46

My adult teeth came through totally transparent in multiple places. I absolutely hate them but can't afford veneers. I have some bone issues and possible elhers-dahlos, which may be connected, but that's not enough to get veneers on the NHS unfortunately.

But to be honest this thread is putting me off veneers entirely!!

TheVamoosh · 03/09/2020 21:50

I read about a male model who committed suicide after having veneers that caused him constant pain. It was such a horribly sad story. When are veneers even needed, really? What's wrong with some orthodontics and whitening?

TheVamoosh · 03/09/2020 21:51

@LucyRivers167

Ok, I can see how orthodontics and whitening might not work for you.

shivermetimbers77 · 03/09/2020 21:51

I had composite veneers done in Turkey: this involves no filings or shaving of the teeth at all. I had six of my top teeth done and closed a large gap. I was told it would only last a couple of years but six years later they still look great and totally natural. They cost less than £400 and the dentist was incredibly professional and the clinic spotless and much nicer than any dentist I have ever seen in the Uk , I will definitely go back and have them done there again when the time comes .

Nets888 · 03/09/2020 21:57

@Monkeytapper, where did you get your £99 veneers done? I'm looking at £200+ here!

Nets888 · 03/09/2020 21:58

@Monkeytapper, I meant composite bonding.

TeacupDrama · 03/09/2020 22:04

I'm a retired dentist, veneersare very thin slivers of porcelain which require very little tooth /enamel removal a bit like a false nail for a tooth they basically go on the front, more extensive is a crown which generally requires 1-1.5mm removal of enamel all round generally done is a tooth is way out of line or has decay or was broken in accident or fall, some crowns have posts into the root of the natural tooth, finally implants replace a missing tooth by putting an insert into the bone (the implant) then a crown is made on top of implant. Lots of UK dentists will not do implants for smokers. There are several decent implant systems most dentists use only one system in their practice as they require specific tools which are not interchangeable so if you get them done abroad your local dentist probably doesn't use same system so can't fix a problem. Different prices in Turkey are often because of lower wages overheads rent for surgeries etc rather than actual cost of materials, obviously if you pay a dental nurse £3000 a month in harley street and £300 a month in Istanbul it will affect costs.

I was about to post the same! Years ago I watched her reality show when she was with Peter Andre, she had her veneers done in America and often she was in agony with them, it actually changed the way she talked, you could tell she was suffering, she was often flying back and forth to America to try and sort the problems out. Personally I would only ever go for composite, no damage to teeth and no filing down 😱
BigBlondeBimbo · 03/09/2020 22:27

No, I wouldn't tbh. I wouldn't have a whole mouth full of veneers for cosmetic reasons full stop tbh. I heard one horror story about someone who had been to a top clinic in London who had chronic migraines after she had them done. Not worth it for me at all. Different if you lose a tooth or two and want to replace them with veneers, but yes, filing down the healthy ones sounds a bit odd. I suppose it's what they have to do to get the veneers on, but it would unsettle me a bit if I knew that was happening.

pguppgdown · 04/09/2020 01:52

my SIL went to Turkey for a full set, top and bottom, of porcelain veneers/crowns. Way cheaper than the UK, and she had a holiday, too. However, she had issues, and had to have the top set replaced due to bad placement issues: you could see a gap, between the new 'tooth' and her gum line. They were happy to fix the issue, and did not charge her, but she did have to pay for flights, accommodation and arrange time off work, so..

cbt944 · 04/09/2020 01:58

So you either get shaved stumps or the composites that can often look like a load of giant chewing gum pellets superglued to your teeth. It's a horrible fashion moment, teethwise.

Monkeytapper · 04/09/2020 02:17

@Nets888 ...Leeds
